Thank you so much for this video. My truck made it 20 years and 148246.0 miles before the odometer quit working. I have the ford shop manuals, but they are no help on this problem. Fords solution when the pin test fails, is to replace the cluster. This saved me hundreds of dollars. I, like some other people commented, had to struggle a little to get the gear position indicator out as my cluster has no tach, but with a little work was able to figure out how it comes out. The whole process took me about an hour to complete and it worked great. Could not have done this without your video. Your clarity in this process made this task not only doable but allowed me to enjoy the process of the repair. Thank you again for taking the time to share your knowledge on this fix.

A great help. i used a jeweler's loop (because my unaided eye couldn't tell if it was damaged) and several of them looked damaged, so I touched the whole connector up and it works great. Way too hot today to want to dismantle that thing twice. I'm glad it worked on the first go-round. The only extra thing I did based off several other videos/articles was I disconnected the positive battery first so the airbag didn't blow up in my face. I'm sure it's safe enough without that step, but it only took an extra minute. I also removed all the light bulbs because I didn't want to force the clips off to find out I was pulling off the lights, but now I re-watched your video I realize I could have left those in. I wasn't expecting the board to take that much force to slide off but that was probably just 17 years of oxidation build up.

This worked like a champ on my 2002 f150! Years ago, the odo display started going out intermittently...and the last few years it's almost always off, but it would come on for a day or so after a really heavy rain. And if it was around inspection time I'd have to race to the shop and try and get the inspection done before it went back out lol. Thanks for the great video man, it was super helpful! Cheers!

Worked perfectly. Took 2 hours to remove and replace and five minutes or less to solder. Both outside pins had cracked solder. I would recommend you pay close attention to how the shift indicator comes out for reassembly. I would also recommend a flex screwdriver for the socket. My problem was intermittent. Worked when cold and then would turn off. I live in Denver, and I was always nervous the odometer wouldn't come on for the emissions test. Thank You Very Much!

Thank you. Very nicely done and it helped a lot. The only thing I needed to get from someplace else is how to disconnect the gear shift display. My odometer was intermittent so I'm hoping this will have fixed the problem for good. I only touched the one solder point that you mention instead of doing them all like another video suggested. I understand doing them all while in there after all the work getting it undone, but I didn't want to touch anything more than I had to, so I went with your one point. Hopefully, I won't have to go in again. The hardest part for me was getting the plugs undone from behind the console. I also scratched my dash trying to get out the light switch panel, but that's partially due to my truck being so old (2002) that I think it just scratched easily - took off the gray overlay/plastic. They don't put much quality into a lot of this plastic stuff. Anyway, thanks, I'm crossing my fingers that this works, but I won't know for a few weeks if it consistently displays.

Thanks for this video. My odo has been going out for a while. I didn't know it was this easy to access, so I took it out. I noticed I had two dry solder joints. The far left pin and the far right pin. Put some fresh solder on those and it works like a charm. While I was in the cluster, I went ahead and cleaned the clear bezel, and 18 years worth of dust trapped inside. Looks brand new and now my odo works. And I've got almost 408,000 miles on my truck!

@@MrKistel Thanks! The water pump finally went out about a year ago and I had to get that replaced. A/C compressor isn’t working - it locked up, so I’ll hopefully be replacing that soon. It was missing pretty bad but I had the coils, spark plugs, and wires replaced and it runs very well now. Haven’t done anything to the supercharger, I’m afraid to mess with it, but it seems to be working well.

Thanks so much! This is the only video I found like this. I've to a 2003 Ford F150 XLT Lariet and the odometer indicator lights up intermittently. More OFF than ON as time goes by. I had to go a little deeper; to the indicator with ribbon cable. My problem seems to be in the ribbon cable or connector. I moved everything around until I think I got it working, but only tomorrow will tell. Once I removed it from the board, I took a closeup photo with the Ford part number on the indicator with connector so I can research the availability and price of another if the problem persists. Thanks for your video. It gave me the courage to tackle this project on Labor Day morning.

Did mine and it worked but I would recommend examining every solder joint in the set with a strong magnifier. I had the typical obvious solder cracks on the outside pins but upon closer examination with a magnifier I could see at least 2 more inside pins were cracked , so I did them all. Over the years I've fixed quite a few relays, modules ,etc. with this problem and every one was on a apliance or device subject to a lot of jostling or vibration so that is definetly a factor I believe. Another thing I would strongly recommend is the use of liquid elec flux as a prep to soldering. It is really important. Put a few drops on a Qtip and wipe the joint, you can solder immediatley and it will reactivate the old solder like magic. It also will require less heat with flux and there will be less chance of lifting a trace.Make sure you do wipe with alcohol when your done to remove any remaining flux from the area.I have poor eyesight so I was nervous because these pins are a lot smaller than you might imagine from the video and I was worried about bridging joints accidently.Got it done thogh and I'm so gratefull for this video and one other which were indispensible so thanks so much for making it!

If you do this make sure you have the right tools. Need a 1/4'' socket with an extension, 7mm and 15 torx screwdriver. My light controls definitely did not come out easily, pieces broke. Make sure you tilt your steering wheel down and put the truck in 1st gear. The point you solder is on the flip side of where you unplug the ribbon. My board looked much different, it was confusing at first.

Rosin core solder. It can be tricky. you want to try to make both surfaces hot for the solder to properly adhere but not over heat the board as to melt anything.

I have repaired two of them, one in a Silverado and another in a Ford F150, just by removing the electrical connectors and spraying both male and female sides with a good helping of CRC Electronic Connector Cleaner. There was no need to do soldering. The Silverado took minutes to do and the Ford took an hour. The Silverado was sometimes displaying the odometer intermittently because the prongs were loose. . I took it out again separated a few of the outer prongs to get a good fit. No problems with either of them has occurred again.

Can you tell me how long did it take you to disassemble , fix and then reassemble?

it has been a long time since I did this project so I can not recall exactly. I would guess it took a couple hours or so.

@@MrKistel Thank you. I’m in process of buying a 2006 Ford F-250 and the digital odometer is not working. Eventually I will have to get it fixed and I was trying to estimate how much it will cost. Runs great!

It looks like you soldered the joint on the non-plug side of the board. Other videos showed soldering on the pin or plug-side of the board. Does it make a difference?

Hello, my 2010 ford crown Victoria has the same problem and after watching this video I might just fix it by myself, I do have one question though, what kind of soldering wire did you use in that video?

Hi, I just purchased a 97 Ford Expedition and the speedometer is not working. It reads 128856, however it did read 124500 on an inspection report just Sept. 2016 so it just stopped working recently. What do you think the cause could be?
@mikemcleroy73977 жыл бұрын
MrKistel, I hope you still reply to older videos like this one. Thanks for taking the time to make this great video, first off. I, too, have the intermittent odometer on my 2002 F150. I've lived with it, knowing what it is for a while now, but recently, my ABS light in the cluster died as well so the cluster emits a series of 5 beeps 3 times after key on because it knows the bulb is out. However, the bulb is actually a surface mount LED. Do you have any experience or knowledge of how to diagnose and/or repair this? Thanks again for the video and for sharing your knowledge! 🍻

Thanks for the comment. Not sure off top of my head, been awhile since I have played with a panel on this type of truck. Let me know if you figure it out.
@mikemcleroy73977 жыл бұрын
MrKistel my bad. It's the Airbag light, not the ABS light like I stated above. It IS a replaceable bulb. Thanks for replying. I subscribed!

Hello which one do you think I need to sodder if my odometer isn’t showing and the needles all don’t move. All fuses are good and the lights on cluster work just not the odometer and needles
@MrKistel4 жыл бұрын
Jason, hard to say but if you take it apart you might be able to see what the issue is. Perhaps a loose connection will be visible. Please advise what you determine is wrong with your Ford odometer.

Hey, great vid. I have a 2002 Nissan Xterra with digital odometer and some of the numbers are blanked out. When I push the screen, they all show but when I let it go, some phase out again. Do you think this is what I need to do? Thanks in advance.

One suggestion -- disconnect the ground on your battery to prevent any shorts. I would get a CHILTONs book ( it is a How To handbook ) so you can see what everything is. I have yet to try it yet, nervous about doing the soldering. How difficult is it to take out the clusters and can they get crossed accidentally putting back in ??
@MrKistel7 жыл бұрын
It is not too bad if you take your time. It is always a gamble taking things apart but sometimes that is the only option to move forward. Best of luck.

This might have worked for my 2005 expedition, however it did not. The instrument cluster is a different model. The back cover doesn't come off without removing the entire face including the thin black cover and needles. The screws are under the face. However, I wanted my husband to attempt it anyhow. He cut a hole in the back to access the green board. We couldn't see any clear damage that we should specifically saw her specifically sautter. So we touched up some points and put it back in to see what would happen. We plugged it back in and some and some things worked and some things didn't work. But some things stayed on even when the car was off which drained the battery. In conclusion, I have a new cluster on the way. And for now it's not plugged in at all so I have no idea how fast I'm going or how much gas I have and other things stopped working also. Cannot roll my windows down.. The automatic door locks do not work.And worst of all! The radio wont-work! Who knew all these things ran through the instrument panel cluster?!?! Lmao ....lesson learned.

Did I miss a previous video? How did you know which solder point was the one you needed to redo? My odom has been blank for a long time, now I have other cluster lights that come on. When they do I lose my tac, speedo and water temp gauge. Please see my video and offer your advice. Pretty sure there's a short, but I don't know what solder point may be causing the problem. Thanks

Thanks for watching and sorry to hear of your frustrations with your vehicle's dash display. I am afraid I am not sure what your issue may be. You can visually inspect the board the best you can and see if you notice an obvious short or a solder break somewhere. Please let us know what you the culprit was when you figure it out.
