That's an awesome fix. First time seeing those magnets. VAG have a lot of issues with the glove box that there are a bunch of kits to fix them but this is 1 of the the best I've seen.

This is a super common problem for sure. I bought my 05 Mk4 Jetta with a broken glove box lid. I saw multiple solutions for how to fix it including these magnets but when ECS Tuning placed these on sale for $35 I bought one and replaced it. Can't beat it. However, this looks like a good solution if you aren't as lucky as I was.

I had the same problem with my Mk4 Jetta. I installed the kit from AA Rodriguez (probably the same kit), and it's been great. Those magnets are pretty strong. The door doesn't rattle or anything. And it's really easy to install.

I’ve replaced the glovebox on my gli 2 times and it broke again so I used these magnets. I’m happy that it can be closed now for such little money. My only complaint however is if I hit a bump it will open. I’m sure if you’re on stock suspension that wouldn’t happen, just something to consider

I installed one of these kits today -- the one I have looks exactly like the one HumbleMechanic installed, black stickers and all -- and the magnets are strong. Unfortunately the magnets nearly always jump from the top location to the one below (the one with the screw and washer). In the process of the transfer, they move slightly, eventually not matching/fitting into the top placement. My girlfriend is going to have to move the magnets back into place every few times she opens the glove box unless I correct the issue with some type of adhesive or something to keep the magnet in the correct location. Just wanted to let you all know/warn you. It's an imperfect solution, though will work in a pinch/temporarily.

I have a 2001 GTI, RHD from the UK and my glove box did not have the bump stops. This kit still works, I had to become creative. There are two holes on either side where the original latch locks into place. I placed the large magnet inside and got the smaller silver magnet (with a hole in it) and put it on the outside face, and super glued it into place. (Recreating where the bump stop would have been) I then put the black washer and screw onto the silver magnet and gently closed the glove box lid and pressed against the screws to give me the points to screw the black screw and washer down into the glove box lid. It isn’t pretty or OEM, but it’s functional and way cheaper than a new glove box lid! Hope this helps anyone without the bump stops!!

My MKIV has had a handful of issues, the glove box was one of them. Since the door looked like shit, I just replaced it. I also modified the new one to hold my cell and ipod and I have plugs for them in there to link them to the head unit.

You can fix this problem properly for 0 dollars all you need to do is split the two pieces that make up the glove box door. And then use 2 small screws with a washer on each to reattach the the little mechanism that holds the sliders in place. Then glue the 2 parts of the glove box door back together and it works as perfect as it did when it was new.

My handle was also removed because of the small pins flying around in the inside. I opend the glove box with sheer brutal force and replaced the pins with a sawed of nail. Worked perfectly.

@@HumbleMechanic I always bought the 3M style velcro strips so not much residue but yeah I know that the plastic heats up enough in summer to make things gooey. Toughest thing is keeping the velcro sticking cause the glove box is always pulling on it, I ended up putting two strips back to back in the middle to create a spacer. IMO this magnet idea is way more reusable than velcro or tape. The mk4 life isn't easy but it's worth it

The key here is strong magnets. This same thing happened to my AH Holden/Opel/Vauxhall Astra 4 years ago and had the moment of clarity in the middle of the night. Magnets. I used circular magnets about 20cm in diameter and glued them with JB Weld epoxy glue (owing to metal and plastic). Did the trick until my bro-in-law decided to open the glovebox mid-trip. Why? Alas those magnets no longer available and new ones don't cut the mustard. Replacement glovebox? Well this was a new replacement glovebox which my brother slammed shut the first time out, breaking the pin! :-( There's $600 I'll never see (yes those Astras are very expensive on spare parts) Can't choose family, and they wonder why I say - don't touch! Cheers.

You can separate the lid and fix it plug you want. As I mentioned in the video this is one of many ways to fix the issue. I went the magnet route because I had them.
