Excellent description of how an antiscald valve works. I have an old Delta Anti Scald valve in the shower and it works with sliding cylinders with holes at different levels of the tubes. Pretty cool idea!

As Richard mentions the pressure balancing is to prevent any person that uses the shower from getting scalded

When I built my house I installed 1" cold water main lines and 3/4" hot water main lines... you can flush toilets without any affect of those taking showers since the cold water feed to the toilet is only 3/8". And it helps having 80 psi of water coming in the house.

Mines is doing the direct opposite. Hot water keeps running cold. The hot water tank is working fine. But it might be that safety valve, because I hear a knock when I turn the shower off.

I have the opposite problem. I have great hot water and pressure however when I dial it back to try and take a cold shower the cold water drips out with no pressure. My tolit and sinks are fine.

What brand of tub/shower cartridge and spool is this. Looks like Kohler Rite-temp. Should have explained that. Every brand is different and parts do not interchange.

hi I Have a question. All my tubs and showers have a problem with hot water. The water temperature fluctuates. Hot to warm, this is a new house and we have no clue on how to fix this problem. I forgot to mention the sinks all have hot and cold water.

Hi, I might be too late but here's my thought... you may detect hot water in 6 faucets because they are piped in line with a single source of the problem - the shower pressure balancer. I had a similar problem where I had a cold line to my basement utility sink, the bathroom sink where the shower was located, and a 2/3 bathroom in the attic. All on the same water source line. Once the shower balancer is replaced, then all the other cold taps had no problems. I think, in most cases, balance regulators are not a part of a sink mixing valve - but any cold water source that is "in line" with that problem shower valve can be affected. Hope this helps
