how does the metal grip apply so smoothly for you. Mine is super rough when it cools.
@RRW3 күн бұрын
@@Khaibu1999 it’s always good to have it rough because what you need to do is apply PX on top of the metal base and they give something for the PTX to grip to👍

What attachment do you put on the drill when you are buffing the base after scraping the wax?
@RRW11 ай бұрын
It buffing wheel with its own ball, bearing handle and shaft. Hence then it does not spin in your hand. You can buy it from any great online Ski, tool maintenance company.

At 11:12 you say "fully scraped base". What did you use to scrape the base with? Thanks!

A sharp metal scraper all done by hand. 👍👍 check out some of my other vids and you will see me use it very time. 👍

What do use to clean? I have swix red and black cleaners but not sure if i can use the red one...

I use butter wax base cleaner and then a alcohol wipe which evaporates leaving the surface nice and dry👍

Hi, thanks for this demonstration, when you say metal base, is this the same as p tex ??? Got a swollen ski base just below the binding (I assume the ski absorbed moisture at the binding holes and has caused the ski base below to expand. I'm considering cutting off the swollen area and replacing it with some P-Tex sticks. What would you suggest? I can post photos if you wish. Many thanks.
@RRW Жыл бұрын
If you’re going to expose the core by cutting the base material out, you’ll need to fill it with more base material. You can go online and buy base repair. You will need to use a soldering iron to melt into the base and then put PTex on top. As if you put PTex straight onto the base material, it will only come out. Hope that helps.👍
@tdgeorgas2351 Жыл бұрын
Many thanks dude, this is a crucial tip that you shared. If I got it right, I melt base material (probably light it on and add drops of it and then add p tex). Quick query: can I use base material from an old useless ski? @@RRW

You can drop me your email here if you wish and I'll send you a picture of the ski base condition.

@@tdgeorgas2351 you’ll need to put the base material in the core shot covering just enough of the base so you cannot see any of the fibreglass making sure you leave room to fill up on top with PTEX as this is what you’ll NEED TO scrape off and flatten to match the base. If you feel the whole course shot with base material, you will find it will be very hard to make Flat as it’s more rubbery than PTEX so you will not get a very good finish.

If there are only minor scratches on the sole of the ski, is it worth sanding them with some kind of sandpaper? Or does the bronze brush help to make minor scratches disappear? What kind of solvent do you use to wash off the old wax? Thanks!
@RRW Жыл бұрын
You can sand bass, but you must make sure that it’s with a flat sander and not the tips of your fingers as you’ll get depressions in the ski. I use a proper wax remover for Skis. It’s from butter, wax or data wax. Both products are brilliant👍👍

What kind of material did you use to weld the big chunk in the skis? Because it doesn't look like the regular Ptex stick material.
@RRW3 жыл бұрын
It’s called Metal grip here is a link. As ptex will not stick to the fibreglass. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Black-Metal-Grip-30cm-x-2-Ski-Snowboard-plastic-base-repair-strips-/292487509354?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l6249&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0

You used a soldering iron run on gas. Is there a reason. I guess you could heat any iron to warm the ski and the new material or? Thx for a great video.

Just out of curiosity, surely the cost of this much of a repair would have to be more than worth just buying a new set of skis right? I could understand maybe restoring a vintage set that is irreplaceable. Incredible job on the repair though!

No to repair the ski and a full Sevice as you saw was around £40, so much cheaper than buying a set of skis. 👍👍👍

We always use a thin layer of epoxy before we do a base weld. That way the core is sealed. We also do several passes over the machine with a rough belt to remove the small scratches that will not hold P Tex. You definitely want to get the base and edges level. We finish with a Stone Grind that leaves a Structure pattern on the base.
