Dude, watching you fix up all these old and low-end bikes is so inspirational! Cycling these days is all about expensive new tech and telling people why their bike sucks and it's killing cycling for me. I think I need to pick up one of these unloved old machines and rediscover the joy of just wrenching on my bike and cruising around like I used to when I was a kid.

What do you do if the cones and races are pitted? How do you get the lower cone off the fork? Does that thread on too? Do you need a special tool? Also if the threads are stripped on the fork how do you prepare another fork? Thanks for advice as the shops here charge a lot to do this and I thought it was because they had to remove all the cables, but wow it's easy and can save a lot! Thanks!

The lower cone is normally pressed in place. The one time that I've needed to install one, I was able to do it using a piece of pipe and a hammer.

@2:45 Is it possible to also unalign the bolt from the bottom-up after taking the front brake off? Struggling to do it in the way of the video
@cjhoyle3 жыл бұрын
You would need to pull from the bottom to un-wedge it, but yes this is possible if you thread the bolt in from the bottom. If it's really badly stuck, you might want to dry spraying it with some penetrating oil to break down the rust.

What should one do if the thread has worn out?
@cjhoyle3 жыл бұрын
When you say 'worn out' do you mean that the threads are stripped? If it's the outer threads on the fork that are stripped, you may be able to clean them up with a very small file (very carefully). If it's the cone or lock rings, it's probably best to just replace them.

Bike handlebar-headset to forks-wheel safety issue: Current design doesn’t allow perfect handlebar-wheel alignment, unsafely swivel’s out of control if loosens, and won’t turn if too tight, so a safer design is required.
