My current project is making me headache. I am trying to fit a 1 1/8 inch threadless O/S fork into my old mtb bike frame. I can fit a fork into a steerer tube, but only when "cups" are out and I was wondering are there any headsets or adapters available so I could fit that fork
@cyclemaintenanceacademy4 ай бұрын
Hi, and thanks for your question. It sounds like you're facing a challenging project and I'm not sure if I am able to help! Adapting different components can be tricky. Have you spoke to your local bike shops? They may have some recommendations or be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck with your project!

Hi! I can't seem to find this out anywhere online...what size wrench is the locknut on the headset? Is the locknut size the same one 1" and 1 1/8"? Thank you!! :) I'm struggling with a very stuck headset so my adjustable wrench isn't gonna cut it. I want to buy the specific size 'thin' wrench... Any advice would be helpful! Thank you again :))

Can I replace my headset at home if I don't have those clamps for the 2 cups? Would a rubber mallet work or is that a bad idea? I got an e-bike in the mail and no matter how I put it together, the headset is loose. I want to replace the whole thing and pray that fixes the problem. Now I need to figure out what kind of headset, what size, and if it's something I can do without special tools? I clearly don't have the experience for this work. The bike is an (Amyet G60). Any info would be helpful, thanks
@cyclemaintenanceacademy6 ай бұрын
Hi Ricky, thanks for your question and for sharing your experience. I get your frustration. Replacing a headset at home without specialised tools can be challenging, but it's not impossible. If you don't have a headset press, home tools could potentially work, but it's important to be cautious to avoid damaging the frame or other components. It might be worth to spend a bit more money and let you local bike shop to do the work to be on the safe side. At the end of the day If you damage the frame it will cost you much more.

I'm about to build a bike frame using 1 5/8 tube. I'm thinking of using the same tube for the head/steering tube since it seems it would pair best with the rest of the frame. However, I doubt they make a bearing set for this size tube? Also, I'm wondering about the best way to set up an empty tube to accept a bearing set. I'm sure some method of keeping the bearings at the top and bottom will be required. Maybe a sleeve or some sort of bearing cup? Any advice on simple and cost effective ways to fabricate a steering tube bearing setup from scratch? Thanks. Subscribed. Robert

Hi Robert, thanks for reaching out and subscribing! I'm excited for your bike frame project. I have to be honest though, building bike frames isn't really my thing, so I'm not the best person to give advice on this topic. However, I'm sure some of our viewers who know more about frame building will will offer some helpful suggestions. I wish you all the best with buidling your bike frame! Keep us informed of the progress.

Hey.. I need help, I just change my mtb headset new bearings "tapered" Everything is put in place accordingly , but i felt it so tight, I disassembled Everything back and installed double check and still the same. Might be the compression ring problem , already checked them to , Everything fine. How can i fix this. Thanks
@cyclemaintenanceacademy10 ай бұрын
Hi and thanks for your question. It looks like you already did a lot to solve this problem. Are the new bearings compatible, this same size? If you replaced the whole headset, did you also replaced the corwn on the fork? I have a video here on how to replace the headset here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJqsnpqJbb2YZ7s

There are also 22mm threaded ones, mainly on third world countries like Brazil and some very old swedish/french bikes. Unfortunately, no way to modernize them, as 22mm aheadset suspensions do exist, but I've only ever seen then on old 10-speed 700c bikes.

Hey, thanks for sharing this valuable knowledge about less common setups!

I have two cheap bikes. Both are "full suspension MTBs". They both have threaded headsets. One is 22mm and the other is 28mm. Nice to know the one with a 22mm thread is basically useless in terms of parts. Can't be transfered to a better frame. I mean not that the other bike has much use either.
