Thank you! Being a single woman on a tight budget, I do many maintenance tasks on my own-this was VERY helpful! Question: I have DAP Alex Plus spackling (“professional strength”). I have two seams in my ceiling near two can lights over my mantle that are separating. I also have a new role of mesh tape. Can I use the DAP versus traditional joint compound? I hate to buy an entire tub of joint compound, only to use a small amount. Do you think I can get away with the Alex Plus spackling?
@TheHomeImprovementChannel Жыл бұрын
Hello! I would not use the spackle for that.. It'll probably wind up cracking. It's really meant for small repairs. You can buy the joint compound in a fairly small tub that is a bit cheaper than the big 5 gallon size bucket. Although if you run out and wind up buying 2 tubs you would be better to buy the big one in the first place! It depends on the size of the repair... Hope that helps.. 😀

Great video. Now how does this work when the interior walls have raised bumps and such, almost like a stucco type wall?
@TheHomeImprovementChannel4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. That would be a little more involved. If you have a crack in that wall, if you can still pull the tape off the joint, you'll automatically have an indented area where the tape was. Then you'll have to try to match the surface to go with the rest of the wall. It's actually easier to sand it smooth than it is to do the texture.
@demontekdigital1704 Жыл бұрын
I just did a patch job on my hallway wall using a Texas patch. The owners of the house put in an old work box next to the original 2-gang because they bought a fridge too big for the space, and had to relocate the kitchen light switch to the other side of the wall. Since the old work box was basically jury rigged I removed it, removed the original 2-gang, and replaced them both with a Southwire 3-gang smart box that screws right into the stud like a new work box would. Once the wiring was all done I patched out the hole left by the old work box, and now all I have to do is texture, and paint. The texture looks similar to what a roller with thick paint would leave behind. I plan to use a roller with some thinned AP mud to put the texture on. If all goes to plan as I hope it does the patch won't even be seen. My ace in the hole will be using a flat, or matte paint so if there are any sins they'll be hidden.
@TheHomeImprovementChannel Жыл бұрын
Excellent! I was just working on a house yesterday that had a texture similar to what you're talking about. It's kind of like an orange-peel texture, but the bumps are much calmer... I hope you're able to match it just right so that you don't see it! It's sometimes hard to match a texture and figure out what somebody else did and then try to duplicate it... 😀

@@TheHomeImprovementChannel The calmer orange peel you mentioned might be regular orange peel with about 900 coats of paint on it, lol. One of the sneaky tricks you can pull for textures is using a damp car sponge. You can really control what texture you get by either putting the sponge directly in the mud to get more of a knockdown texture, or you can apply the mud to the wall, and then use the sponge to stipple the mud. It just takes a bit of finesse, and sometimes trial, and error. The only textures you can't pull off are popcorn, and mop, but those are both disgusting, and no one would want either of those anyway, lol.

@@TheHomeImprovementChannel Our home was built in 1980, and has at least 3 layers of paint on the walls. I'm seriously considering replacing the ceiling drywall, and maybe even some of the walls because the tape joints are beginning to fail. It's especially bad where the ceilings meet the walls in the bedrooms. I think I can pull it off, but my wife has reservations, lol. Thankfully my neighbor used to hang drywall for a living so I've asked him to help guide me to make sure I don't screw up too badly. The most expensive part of the job will be buying the hoist to do the ceilings, and some of the other tools. I'll be testing my skills in a very small room that only requires 3 of the walls to be done. If I do a good job I'll chloroform my wife so she can't stop me, and work on the rest of the house. She'll be pissed at me for a day, or so, but it'll be totally worth it, LMAO.

What steps to you add to a wall that has texture? is the spray texture portable can's worth it?
@TheHomeImprovementChannel3 жыл бұрын
HI, it would be a little complicated to add to a message what steps to add. The wall still has to be fairly smooth before you can add the texture. There's different types of texture on wall/ ceilings and matching to your existing is the trick. The texture is a lot of the time called "knockdown". It's usually made of drywall mud that is most of the time sprayed on. Then you wait a few minutes and lightly knockdown the texture with a drywall knife. I am going to do a video on this in the coming weeks, but if you need some advice soon, you can search knockdown and there's tons of info that'll come up. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the video. Question: Will paint stick to that or should I wipe the wall with a damp rag to remove the dust?

I will always use primer first on bare drywall mud. I usually don't use a damp rag.. I usually use a broom or shop vac or something like that. don't see why you couldn't use a damp rag, but if it's to wet it'll mess up the mud.

The problem with this repair technique is that it doesn't consider the significant texturing you will have to do to finish the repair. Using a "spray-on" texture to cover the significant exposed mud would probably make the finished repair look very obvious. I doubt a "do it yourselfer" could match the existing texture.
