There is a wood putty for this type of repair. There is a great show on the BBC called The Repair Shop. It’s fantastic! Shows repairs of many different collectibles.

What are the benefits of using toothpicks instead of epoxy that you add the appropriate color yourself? Or "woodfiller" with the appropriate color?
