I have my father’s box. Looks exactly like that but in way better condition. He was a tool and die maker at the Bethlehem Steel plant at Sparrows Point, Maryland.

I died of jealousy a few years ago... a friend at work showed off his dad's machinist's tool chest (complete). His father was issued it when he worked at Avro Aerospace in Malton, Ontario and it is RARE to say the least and in near perfect condition. I've had a real "thing" for wooden toolboxes ever since.

The first thing I found out was that the draws can fall out at the worst time. I bought steel boxes and never looked back.

As many times as I have seen these old boxes refurbished I have never seen anyone actually demonstrate how such pieces are actually use. For myself I have two on my watchmaking bench but have had to do quite a bit to make them user friendly for organizing my tools. Surely, there must be some old mechanics or engineers who can demonstrate how these items are meant to be used, right?😮😮😮

@Instone09ine Can do. I cheated and got my two at HARBOR FREIGHT for about $80USD a piece. I use them to keep my watchmaking tools organized but had to construct partitions in the drawers. No biggy but had there been some kind of after market partition system I could have used.......or maybe what tools fit and are most handy in what drawers it would have been helpful. Just sayin.

You could try coating it with matt finish it might not be as bumpy as you think once its painted.

Big hitter! Put some wide masking tape on one side to contain the expanding foam, when it has set remove the masking and fill👍

Not good at all - ruined. Never should have tried to make it look new. Try to make it look like a well kept old tool chest. Clean repair where necessary and preserve.
