How to Repair Common RV Roof Failures?

Welcome back to this hard working 2005 Beaver Monterey. In the previouis video, we did an inspection on the roof and found a number of issues. After discussing options with the owner, we decided to move ahead with repairs.
For the roof lap sealant I used Xtrm lap sealant but a Dicor lap sealant works too. Of course gray butyl putty tape under the vent and standard 100% clear silicone on the awning rails.
Thanks for following along with this 2005 Beaver Monterey. These high quality Oregon motorhomes from 1999 to 2008 really set the bar for RVs that even today haven't been revivaled.

I get lots of compliments on my 2001 Beaver Marquis. Like you said you have to maintain them. I’m probably spending between $5000 to $10000 a year in materials and doing all my own work to keep it nice. Most people are shocked when I share the numbers of operating and upkeep of an old motor home.

Right on, that's still very inexpensive compared to new RVs if you just amortize the depreciation let alone the upkeep.

My 26ft max lite Rvision is going to need a new roof soon and the front is starting to show delamination I believe do to the roof transition strip. The roof is the original epdm I believe 2006. I was thinking of going to a fiberglass type roof one piece and wrap it down the front. What are you thoughts on this? I value your videos and experience Thank you

Hi James! Do you think the same can be said of cheaper motorhomes such as my class C 2001 31C Winnebago Minnie ? Mine is still in great shape and has never leaked. Yes, It is kept in a building but I've only had it since 2015

James, it really is a shame that no one gives a flying rat's snotball about doing quality work anymore. The build quality of our 2005 Monaco LaPalma is far superior to our friends' 2022 Jayco North Point 5th wheel, which looks like it was put together with cardboard; they've had it in the shop for the last year, trying to have the rear cap repaired properly (it came apart at the seam), and both times it wasn't done right. In the year they've owned it, they were able to use it twice.....they paid $120,000; we paid $37,000 for ours used.

I'm sad to hear that about your friends but it seems too common now. The manufacturers have done the numbers and since most RVs sit unused for 11 months a year, theres little incentive to make them last anymore.

Hi James, I am in the UK and have a 2015 Thor ACE 29.2 and I have noticed on the roof approx 1 foot diameter roundish section in front of the ladder that the roof covering has lifted, the wood underneath I mean, it's dry so I think due to traffic the glue it's lifted. What's the best way to stick it back down? Thx Mick

Hey there! I just love your videos. No fluf and phonyness. I just ripped off and replaced my '90 Winnebago Warrior 21ft class c. I'm using the green zip system osb 7/16". Looking good with eternabond on EVERY seam! I know it's overkill, but I figured, better safe than sorry. I'm getting ready to put a pvc membrane down with their included glue (from RecPro) Question 1: It says to put the glue on the decking AND on the membrane to properly adhere it. I notice that when you've done it, you just put it on the wood and not the membrane too. Is it OK if I do it like that? Question 2: Should I prepare the osb first with some kind of primer or sealer before gluing the membrane? Will it help with adhesion? Thank for reading my post. I'm doing this project tomorrow and was hoping you or one of your viewers could help me. Thanks!!!!

You mentioned you saved about four tubes on one vent i am wondering if I am doing something wrong. I just re sealed a vent today and it usually takes me one tube for a vent of the Alpha lap sealant and I put a much more liberal amount than some people. It looks like a lot to me. Is it not normal to only use a tube on a vent? Edit: oh I see you were talking about a skylight and saving 4 tubes not a vent.

I have a 2005 holiday rambler that I'm finishing a roof that someone else took apart. The side and rear moulding is the kind that screws into the side but has the one inch or so "leg" on the top of the roof. I've dug all around the internet and KZbin how to install and seal that type of moulding and can't seem to find anything. Is that style just really uncommon on a roof? Everything seems to be the kind that is only on the side like on the budget roof repair you did recently.

most roofs can handle 2 adults it's really the small trailers that might be the most difficult to walk on the trusses only.

AZ hello I'm in the state of Alabama do you know of any large RV salvage Yards in Mississippi , Alabama , Ten , or Georgia ? I have a 18' awning that the roller , Awning fibric cover is bad. Thinking this is a Dometic part maybe a 9200 or 9100 awning system. The panel is mainly make up of these 2 1/2 18' interlocking alum slide together panels with a locking screw at both ends. I hope I have painting a picture in you head of what this looks like. I have two panels that are bent and will not stay in place. I have tried to straighten then but this metal is really hard to beat back in place. I would not mid driving 100 to 150 miles one way to pick this panels or the whole awning cover. This is not a slide toper but goes over the front of my motorhome on the side where no slide is located. Just thought I would try to see if you could help me in anyway. I have laid down a NEW EDPM unsealed rubber roof I need to install the roof vents with butyl tape and dicor sealant. However I’m plan to use Flexseal liquid on the whole roof. Which order? suggestions? can you guide me? Thanks .😢

@@mikerosenberger1631 Guessing entire roof. Inside headliner is all stained bad, previous owner claims repaired. I'm unable to climb so have no idea condition topside. James suggests once a year inspection, owned 15 mo, never inspected.

Entry model RVs age better. When you start getting older luxury stuff, it's usually a steaming pile with all the stuff that either doesn't work anymore and/or how everything is obsolete on it and also a lot of the times hasn't been maintained. Chassis components and diesel engine parts are so expensive these days and made in china now, it's NOT even worth your time!! Much better finding an old gas rig. They age much better. Gasoline engines don't mind sitting around.. Which is what most RVs do most of their life, is just sit around ... Every diesel I've seen looks beautiful on the outside and it's really a pile underneath all that paint. Because they cost a literal fortune to maintain. Hardly anyone does that. I've seen prevost country coaches and emeralds and legacy that looks amazing. But they have issues that need addressing. Sometimes these issues can cost $60,000 or more..... So I'm very careful what I look at and what I fall in love with lol ❤️😆
