Thank you so much for this. My cable is damaged all the way in the garden, that’s 87 m away. I’ve been told to replace the entire cable which means damage to my ceiling where the cable runs. Now, i know how to repair the cable to avoid all the expense and damage. Thank you again.

Would love to see video on different types of tool you have / use

***** Hi, thanks for the comment. The testers I had/have are quite old now, I mainly use a multi meter for shorts and battery/earth faults and also a TDR (time domain reflectometer) to measure the distance to shorts and disconnects on copper only and most importantly the tone and probe to locate/prove wires but all of these rarely get used these days as I am mainly into selling rather than the engineering side. But perhaps they may all surface again one day!!!!!!!!!All the best Vince

Can you use these to do two cables out and one in?
@mrnobody9227 Жыл бұрын
Important nugget for all: so I thought you could use a single box to link three PoE Ethernet cables together for my ubiquity Wi-Fi ports. Was working fine with two cables together but then I found as soon as I added the third cable into the block the power was killed on the first ubiquity and power restored when I removed the third cable again. I don’t know if this is a combination of conflicting poe stuff and only found this out through 2 hours of trial and error. (The second ubiquity unit had its own poe adapter so don’t know if that was interfering somehow. ). In any case I just ran a second cable and bought a second junction box and all working fine.

Hello Vince i had purchased a couple of Rj45 connectors and a coupler to repair/join my 60 meter cable the dog chewed through.I spent a bit of time trying to keep the wires straight but finally got the wires in the same position on both plugs and crimped them tight.The problem was when i went to place each end in the coupler,the wire codes were in reverse to each other.I had to redo the wires on one plug so that when they were placed in the coupler the brown wire lined up with the brown and so forth.This was my first time doing this but i have internet so i presume i finally did it the right way.Can you confirm what i did was correct,matching the colours when using a coupler to join cables together?...Thanks..I had previously soldered the wires together but this method was a real pain considering the wires were so thin but it did get me out of trouble.How many times i cursed that dog of mine lol.

the coupler will change the order of the wires so that they are in the correct order ! if you change the around they will be reversed and will not work

what you may be needing is a punchdown/66 block. It is usually best to have that block mounted on a small piece of plywood so you can tack down the wires neatly.

how many wire pairs are required to establish a 100 Mbps full duplex connection on a Cat5E cable with a length of 180 meters?
@jdilksjr3 жыл бұрын
180 meters is to far for ethernet over Cat5e or Cat6. The limit is 100 meters. Use fiber or put a switch in between. 100Mbs uses 2 of the four pairs, however if POE is involved it needs all four pairs. If you want to go to 1000Mbps in the future you wire all four pairs.

I've managed to cut through 3 extension cables which were sitting behind some plasterboard whilst using a core drill. I'm planning on spanning the gap between the cut wires (roughly 100mm for each cable) with new cable and would like to know if there are any small waterproof connectors I can use which will fit behind the plasterboard - there isn't a huge amount of space between the plasterboard and the brickwork and I suspect that the cable has been bedded to the wall using plasterboard adhesive so it won't budge such that I could shift it around somewhere else.
@Mymatevince8 жыл бұрын
+BODGE71 Maybe you could use jelly crimp connectors, they have a small amount of gel in each crimp to help keep it waterproof. Have a look at my KZbin video on how to use jelly crimps so you can see if they will do the job.

Thanks for the vid, how many of these can i put on one cable, will performance degrade with each box?
@ralbasta5 жыл бұрын
Every junction box degrades performance, in theory there shouldn't be any junction boxes on a cat5e or cat6 network cable. however if your network is only a domestic network where large amounts of data are NOT being up and downloaded you will probably get away with a single coupler without noticing much difference.
@martinjeffree77378 жыл бұрын
Hi Vince, can you add a spur to cat6 wiring? I bought a house with cat6 wiring. I asked the electrician to extend the wiring into the airing cupboard. He cut the cable leading to a bedroom point and using the type of coupler which telephone engineers use he added a spur to the airing cupboard, after which neither the bedroom point nor the new spur worked. I checked the connections very carefully and they seemed to be good. I then took his spur connections apart and reconnected the cut ends of the original wire using a junction box. The bedroom point worked again. I then added the wires to the spur to the same junction box, again carefully checking the connections. Both points stopped working. Is it fundamentally wrong to add a spur to a cat6 cable or should it work?
@Mymatevince8 жыл бұрын
Hi, on Cat6 wiring every wall socket has to go back on a single cable back to the switch or router. You can't spur of a cable so one cable feeding 2 points. So the Airing cupboard will need to go back to the router on one cable and the bedroom will need to go back to the router on a separate cable. It doesn't work the same as telephone wiring (which you can spur) so unfortunately a lot more wiring is needed. You could look into powerline adaptors if it is a nightmare to run a new cable. Thanks.

Hi, thanks for the video but how can I join a stranded CAT6 cable? I have one of those flat Ethernet cables and I’ve just put a Stanley knife through it!
@Mymatevince6 жыл бұрын
With stranded you would need to crimp plugs onto it (CAT6 RJ45 plugs) and use a coupler to join the plugs. If you have the crimper or you can borrow one then it is cheap to do but crimping the plugs can be a hassle if you haven't done it before. May be more reliable and easier to re run the cable.

Hi, great video! But what if my old cable has only 4 wires and the new one has 8 cables. Can i connect them?
@Mymatevince8 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes you can. The old cable is probably a fast Ethernet cable which only needs 4 wires which are normally the orange and green pair and the new cable will allow Gigabit Ethernet so it needs 8 wires. Once you connect them together you will only ever have Fast Ethernet speeds even on the 8 wire cable because it has been connected to a 4 wire cable.
