Alternator Repair: 1/2 to 6 hours ($10 / $425 / $680)
This video will show you how I replaced the voltage regulator on a Volvo 850. This process can be done on many alternators. Basically considered a rebuild. If you order a new regulator, make sure you get the correct regulator.

Once again Robert came through. My 850's alternator finally gave up after 260k miles. Rather than replace the whole unit, I replaced the voltage regulator with a new one (only $40) that I bought from a local supplier. It is cured now, producing 40amps of power! Thanks again Robert! His many dollar saving videos is why I gladly contribute to his Patreon account.

I just love the way you went about it, distinguishing the generator from the voltage regulator. That right there was my take home. The next time my alternator falls short of expectation, i know what component to check out first. Thank you

Hi Robert, thank you for the informative video. My V90 has always had a charging problem (battery only 50% charged even after a long run. Battery itself is good). Looking at the alternator, I had assumed that changing the regulator would require removing the serpentine belt, power steering pump, etc etc, and finally the alternator itself. Your video has encouraged me to have a go at replacing the regulator with the alternator still mounted on the car. Two years back I replaced the regulator on my 940 diesel. That was easy because the back of the alternator is easily accessible. If the rev counter on a 940 stops working, that tells you that the alternator has failed. The rev counter on that car is fed directly by a wire from the alternator.

+v8pilot OK - I replaced the regulator on the alternator of my V90 yesterday. Running voltage is now fine at 14.4 - previously it was only 13.5 and the battery never got more than 50% charged. I found that, with the V90, you *have* to remove the alternator (and before doing that, drain the cooling, remove the upper radiator hose, remove the serpentine belt, and unbolt the power steering pump). So a day's work for me to undo all that stuff and then replace it and finally top up the cooling system. I tried to remove the alternator rear cover with the unit still mounted in the car but not possible - the air conditioning pump prevents its removal on my V90. (Frustrating because I could clearly see the regulator with the cover loose but not possible to access it.) Frustrating to be compelled to do all that work - it took less than ten minutes to replace the regulator on my Volvo 940 diesel because to the good access to the alternator. Thanks Robert - several times I found your video very helpful to refer to, as there are similarities between the 850 and the V90.

I changed the voltage regulator on my 2002 V70 XC today without taking out the alternator. A bit of a PITA but quite doable. Needed to pull the dip stick tube to get enough room for the tools needed. Part was $23 off ebay. Only had one extra screw left over which is good for me LOL. Worked out great. Thanks, Robert.

Hi Robert, With help from your video I replaced the regulator on my old Volvo 850TDI (405000km from 1996). I live in Austria so I bought a new Bosch regulator on Amazon_de for €50. Following your instructions it was an easy job replacing it. As you said, it took me an hour or so. Now the alternator Volvo/Bosch 115A works like new again! Very happy, thanks! Marc Austria

Good video and instruction. Recently, I felt guilty about replacing my alternator with a brand new one versus rebuilding it, but for $74, I went ahead and did it. It wasn't charging and the bearings were worn. If I had a Volvo, I would have gone ahead and rebuilt it due to the extreme cost.

Thanks Robert, you saved me a bundle again. Replaced my regulator with one from LActrical/ebay for $25. I used a long extension with a Phillips driver bit to get the mounting screws loose and then replaced these with socket head screws so they were easy to get back on and snugged up with a shortened Allen wrench.

The battery should charge to about 12.6VDC. The generator/alternator puts out about 14.3V when running. Just put a voltmeter in the battery and measure without the car running. Then start the car and measure again. (If you do not have a scan tool. ) Of course that is voltage - not current. If the brushes are losing contact you may be getting voltage but insufficient current to recharge the battery. A sign the alternator is healthy is if your headlights do not dim when you come to a stop. Note this is a great video. You do need two sockets to remove those high current lines to the alternator.

I got bored of trying so I moved the car so I could wash it and normally it cuts out in around 10-15 minute and lights flash on dashboard I gave it a few revs and dash lights went off and I checked with multi meter when you Rev it power increases to about 14v on meter so I've left it running now for over half hour each time the dash lights come on I Rev the engine they go away and car is still running

Just finished this job, looking like it'll be a good fix based on the condition of the old regulator! Just one question, I drained the radiator and noticed that when I refilled the coolant reservoir, it doesn't drain back into the radiator because of the height of the tubes, should I pour some coolant directly into the radiator to be sure it is filled? Or will this all take care of itself once the car turns on and starts circulating. Thanks!

I've heard before that after turning off the car, you should hear a slight whining noise from the alternator. I've also heard the opposite, that if you hear that noise, you should replace the alternator and/or the alternator pulley. I replaced the alternator pulley, but still hear the whining noise after turning off the engine. Is that normal? if not, is it usually the front or rear bearing inside the alternator that needs to be replaced?

Mr. I just found your video. Here’s what I’m dealing with My truck 2016 Chevy turns off while driving. And have to keep it above 2000 rpm so the alternator can generate above 13.5 v to the battery I went through 2 new batteries already thinking it was the battery but Now I believe the it was the alternator not pumping enough voltage to the battery 🔋. Battery . I jumped the car this morning before this I tested the voltage of battery and it gave me a reading of 11.9. After jumping it And leaving the truck on for 10 minutes The reading with accessories on ac radio lights Was 13.1 while truck running with accesorios off the reading from the alternator to the battery was 12.9 So I don’t hear any sound coming from the alternator like winding sound or bad smell. Do you think is the regulator the problem ??? Any info would be very much appreciated

Without load testing it, it's hard to say. You can drive to an auto parts store and they can probably test both for you.

There are tension tabs that hold the back cover on to the frame of the alternator. Watch it a few times maybe that will help you understand.

Hey Robert, Love what you're doing here. I speak for everyone here when I say I appreciate all the info. My Honda Civic 2012 EX has recently been giving me issues. Car won't start because of a dead battery. Took it to Auto Zone and got a new battery because the reading said it was a bad battery. After it was replaced guy said I need a new alternator as well (Did not pass the voltage regulator test). However a second opinion told me that wasn't the case. Is there a surefire way to check which is the case? If it turns out that I do indeed need one what would you estimate my cost would be? According to the guys at Autozone its going to be about another $190, doesn't sound right to me. Thanks in advance!
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 9 жыл бұрын
MsCleverNever How many miles on the car? Have you checked with the AUTO warranty? Usually, if you can get the car started, and drive 30+ minutes, the alternator is good. If you have to have the alternator replaced, I do NOT recommend getting a cheap corner store one. The cost will likely be about $625 - $675 at the dealer, $500 - $550 at a independent shop. - Bad Battery or Bad Alternator, how to tell the difference (Brief Version) - Auto Information Series

Hey Robert , I went to buy a Alternator today and some shops asked for a ID # other shops didn't . How important is the ID # matching ? Went on eBay and 2 different IDs said they would work for my Car . Not sure of the ID on mine i haven't taken it out yet .

I had a 1991 dodge dakota the aholes at dodge put the voltage regulator in the computer. So I once had to get an entire computer for a .50 cent regulator. I got the computer and you could clearly see where someone had dug out the potting and resoldered the new regulator in...... $300 (rebuilt).... after that I knew if it went bad I could fix it for .50......

Why couldn't just the negative post be disconnected from the battery ?
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 10 жыл бұрын
The power lead to the alternator has a direct connection to the positive battery terminal. If you put a wrench on the bolt that secures the cable to the alternator, and you hit some other metal with a wrench and create a ground, you'll learn a new lesson about car wiring. I apologize, I thought I explained that.
@fordwindsor351
@fordwindsor351 10 жыл бұрын
If the neg post is disconnected, no current is able to pass through anything, every repair manual I have read always says to just take off the negative alone.
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 10 жыл бұрын
Ok, do it their way. I usually only disconnect the negative. Let me ask you this... what do you think would happen if you took a wrench, set it on the positive battery terminal, then connected the other end of that wrench on a metal part of the motor or frame?
@fordwindsor351
@fordwindsor351 10 жыл бұрын
Directly from the battery you would get some action( in some cases none hough, it depends) but in 99.99% of the time the issue is when someone forgets to take off the neg and touches anything ( away from any battery posts) but again, once the neg is disconnected there is no harm is touching , unhooking etc.

@@RobertDIY If car has Alt gauge in car and shows nothing it is bad volt reg. If barely charging then rectifier. Possibly both if charge wire to battery hits Alt casing. Also both could bad cuz there is a chip in varnish on windings should be taken all apart for inspection and cleaning. Sometimes chip can be fixed with nail polish. Some cases it may just need brush replacement.
