Good video. It's also important to verify that the old capacitor has been discharged prior to touching the terminals.

Good point. Always ground out the capacitor by touching the terminals with an insulated screwdriver. Even a dead capacitor can hold some residual charge.

Mike, I did a video on why I went with the new Ameristar by American Standard. In the video I talk about making your old R22 until last and last and last (I got 17 years out of mine before all the R22 leaked out of the unit). I was able to get 17 years out of it by replacing the (1) capacitor, (2) contactor switch and (3) motor, all for a little over $100 total. I just bought those things ahead of time when they were on fire sale from different places, and just kept them for when needed. Just about anyone can do this type of work. Thanks again my man!

Hey Mike I live in Arizona You know our temps get blistering hot in the summer. My AC is still under warranty and about 3 weeks ago that is exactly what happened to mine. That is the second time in my AC unit is only 8 years old. My HVAC guy where I bought my unit came out and he told me the problem is several years back the capacitors were about seven or eight about 8 in high and probably about 4 to 5 in in diameter and they lasted a long time then they started putting these small ones in the newer units and he said especially with our heat they just don't last. I was lucky enough mine was still under warranty I didn't have to pay a single penny but you are so right and telling people to buy spares especially depending on where you live. Our summer temps have been 113 to 118 already thanks again for sharing and God bless

I just cleaned my condenser coil today -- spray on condenser cleaner from the box store on the outside. Did not take off fan / top. Moderate garden hose spray from the outside. Inside discharge temp went down 4 deg.

Great save of money Mike. Yep, these fans need a phase shift to 'know' which direction they have to spin. The capacitor causes this shift. Thanks for sharing and have a great week. Dutch regards Nico.

Yeah caps go bad over time. Down here HVAC isn't common outside of commercial buildings, but of all the times the aircons have gone kaput, most were caps, a couple were relay switches, and one ancient window unit was the coils just losing the battle against time... and then there's just the annoying drain line clogs and dry rotting cheap butt tubing. As for cousin Hoolio, I heard that his favorite panaderia closed down so he can't get his cafecito so he's grumpy on mornings. He needs that double espresso with diabetes level sugar to form words before noon. 😂

I had a capacitor go recently . I watched the HVAC guy fix it. He showed me how the capacitor was concave ontop like a gabage can lid. He said when they are like that you instantly know the capacitor is the problem 99% of the time.

I replaced my capacitor 2 times,they lasted about 5 years,you can turn the fan on with a stick,but as soon as it reaches the set temperature it cuts off,I had to replace my ac system 2 weeks ago,the second system I bought in almost 31 years living here,the first time I replaced my capacitor I took a trip through all kinds of traffic to get to the parts place,the second time I got it from Amazon.

Here in California that type of service, with part, would not be under $400. So, yes, you can do it. Just make sure you wear rubber cloves. Those capacitors hold a charge that can be released in an instant. SAFETY FIRST!

Have a Trane AC/heat pump that blows the outdoor unit capicitor at least once a year. It is very old, but it runs great & keeps perfect temperature otherwise. Since Tranes are built differently from most other brand AC/heat pumps, does anyone know if they require a special type of capacitor? Vs the standard universal types most HVAC service companies use. Thank you, if anyone can share some advice. (I've researched on line but answers vary too much for me to understand. I also asked my service HVAC tech, who works for a non-authorized Trane dealer, & he very abruptly cut me off mid-sentence to say their generic capacitors work with all heat pump brands, including Trane. His reaction made me a little wary. And inquisitive. )
@MrKnowItAllGuru2 ай бұрын
I am going to agree with your HVAC tech, because most of these are made in China and the quality just isn't there anymore. You may need to contact Trane directly and just purchase a slew of them for when you need them. Thanks for watching, have a great weekend. Guru Mike & team
