My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

@@StevenEverett7 It should still be running. My Tecumseh is still running like new after 35 years. I hope yours serves you as well. My comment was around "they want you to destroy the engine soon and buy a new one." If someone followed their advice and destroyed their engine, would that person (not you, because you take care of your equipment) buy their next mower from Husqvarna? Probably not. Very short sighted of Husqvarna.

The Briggs air filter problem isn't with the air filter. The problem is with the PCV system and the piston ring blowby. The oil all over the air filter is coming from the PCV system. The PCV hose connects to the air cleaner housing and dumps all of the piston ring blowby into the inside of the air filter. There is so much oil being pushed out of the crankcase and into the PCV hose that is soaking the air filter with oil from the inside out. Once the air filter gets saturated with oil the particulates from dirt, leaves, etc. start to buildup on the outside of the air filter and creates that huge mess that you see on the air filters.

Hi Bre. Another informative video. 👍🏻 One thing I’d like to point out is one more step in diagnosing the solenoid. When activating the solenoid with the jump lead also check for voltage on the output side to the starter. If none there then you can condemn the solenoid. If there is voltage, check connections to the starter. Also verify the starter is properly grounded to the engine and the engine itself is grounded to the battery. So many times in my mechanical career a ground is the source of many problems.

My 85 year old father-in-law has a ~15 year old Toro push mower. He has a quarter acre of weeds to cut every season. He has never changed the oil and can’t remember when he last addd any. I am convinced the longevity of that mower and his car are a perk from being a retired Baptist pastor. Lord knows, I would never be that fortunate. 😆

Cheers Bre great video. Here in the Emerald Isle (Ireland) I had an issue starting my Rideon Mower at start of the season. Despite the fact that I had fully charged the battery the mower struggled to start. What I discovered through trial and error and some experience gleamed from your good self over the past year or more was that the Starter Solenoid had an intermittent fault that only presented when it was left idle for a period of a week or so. Once used it kept starting until put away. New Solenoid sorted it. Some viewers may experience this problem instead of a totally crapped out solenoid. Change that oil people 😂 Love the channel. I had one of the no change oil Briggs on a rear drive Troy Bilt. I loved the mower, had it at least 5 years. Did my best to change the oil a few times. It still blew up, catastrophic engine failure. Loud pop, lots of knocking and a hole right through the mower deck. Replaced it with a Honda part way through the season last year and the Honda is in the shop with a recall. Something with the crank so I should get a free oil change out of it. Damn weather is so warm I might have to mow in March in northern Pennsylvania. Hopefully Honda gets the parts out to dealers soon.

Great tip on removing the negative battery terminal before starting to replace the solenoid. If you don't, it's super easy to short something and have it arc flash you blind, or have the cable weld itself on to ground and heat up and cook something like your hand and the cable.

About 12 years ago I bought a new Snapper 21” SP Ninja Muncher thinking I had bought the best available. B&S engine w/ automatic choke. If I stopped when mowing for 10 minutes the choke engaged, engine could not be started for another 30 minutes. Every mower deck when mulching spits grass from under the deck from some corner. This mower spit grass so it looped back up to the air filter. And the gas cap. Grass clippings all around the gas cap and under the lip of the gas cap, which made it nearly impossible to remove without dropping grass into the tank. And finally, the right rear wheel adjustment lever hit other parts when adjusting at interesting cut height. A big screwdriver was necessary to provide “encouragement”. I bought an EGo 56v which worked great for 6 years on the original battery. SP got intermittent so I bought a new EGo w/o battery. Hate the hand controls in the new. Finally bought a Country Clipper 42” ZTR with Kawasaki 18hp. 0.3 acres this year, 3 acres in 2025, might be too small but I’m waiting to find out for myself. Love the single joystick vs twin stick. And love the accessory handrail for getting on/off.

2:49 its perfect since if your stuff is made in china, and you just want to sell more motors. Yes the profits will roll in for the investors. Far from the 1960s Briggs company that made in america with union workers made 99.9% of the small engine market. And parts were cheap to buy the motors lasted forever and you could fix with a bobby pin. We are brainwashed new means better. No new means its crap.

My hobby is Wheel Horse. Just a simple K serues Kohler with a fifty year life span, and easily rebuildable if need be. When you see jow much more robust the solenoids were back in the day, it makes you want to keep them around. There is a little metal cap on them and i drilled a tiny hole in it snd added penetrating oil. After letting it sit a day or so, it works again. Smear a bit of silicone gasket maker on it and done.....

Here's a good one that happened to me. Out mowing with my zero turn mower in a small pasture i hit barb wire laying in the grass. So i remove two blades to get it out. Put the blades back on and continue mowing. Overtime the mower gets bad vibration and I can't quite figure out why. So i take it to the dealer that works and sells Gravelly. It's on my trailer and the mechanic gets on and starts it to take it off the trailer and says the problem is at the PTO. Two ways to fix the problem one is to change out the crankshaft and other is to machine a new piece at the key way. So I went with the second option. Then while he had it, he changed out the hydraulic oil and filters and same with the engine oil change. Then when i picked it up he told me that after i start it to make sure to run it full throttle all the time.
