I got a "C" on this if this was a test. I knew right away that the fuel lines were backwards. Tank line is always close to then engine on these. Other clue was when you were priming the bulb, it wasn't priming correctly. That could be because of the line (which it was) or that the bulb is cracked or weak. Since it was dis-colored, I would replace it. Probably has one more season before it goes south. Good tip on removing plastic caps. I knoew about them, but was unsure which was the high and low. The vent hose tip was priceless! Never would have figured that out! Great find! Thanks a bunch.

Thanks for the video, stuffed around with a trimmer that wouldn't get off idle, followed your checks and found a blocked fuel intake under the filter. Looked like a ball of grey gunk! Put her back together and primed properly which is what caught my attention in your video and ran mint after a few tweaks on the mixtures. Saved a new carby purchase, which would have been a waste of money.

My 16 year old Craftsman (poulan) trimmer has two different size fuel lines and fittings, so they can't be put on wrong. The smaller line is the fuel supply. I thought they were all that way. Tank vent is in fuel cap. This year, it is acting up. Maybe I didn't get all the fuel out last year. Carb adjustments work, even trimming grass under load.. It later acts up, stalling and hard starting. Stalling even with choke, as if out of gas. Bulb pumps but air is in return line along with fuel. Forget if it always did this. Fuel lines look good. Acted up with no fuel filter and cap loose. I took the carb apart and no visible dirt or deposits found. I put the top carb section on wrong and punctured the fuel pump diaphram with a screw, so I don't know if cleaning helped. I ordered a new carb as it may be something else inside carb. It has not arrived yet.

Slowly getting some battery stuff in the fleet. I keep my saws outside all the time, in the rain, etc. Never hurts them. Now, gotta consider how to keep all the electric tools, covered, and places for all the chargers and spare batteries, for all this new equipment. We are in a new age.

I have a trimmer that would only run on half choke for years. It would not start today. Figured I have nothing to lose by taking it apart. It's hard to get the thing apart to even work on it. There is a red cover over the top of the engine which is notoriously difficult to remove. There's 10 different screw types & sizes. The fuel lines are so old, they're nearly impossible to remove. Hard to tell if there's even a problem with the choke apparatus. I don't have the skills or experience to know how to fix it if there is. There was a bunch of fuel in the piston area that came gushing out when I removed the cap under the fuel tank. The gasket ripped in half when the cap came off, so it really can't be reused at this point. So I'm guessing the engine was flooded in addition to having an air problem. Any parts that this might need are likely not carried at the local hardware store. Even if I spent the money on the parts needed, there's no guarantee I could even put this thing back together. Also, taking it somewhere to try to have them fix it would have been more expensive than buying a new one in the first place. Solution - don't buy gas trimmers unless you have friends or family with skills & ready access to replacement parts. The throwaway economy that we've developed is unsustainable, and eventually will come crashing down.

Excellent information. My Echo weed eater has been driving me crazy. Starts fine but several minutes into job it starts to bog down and won’t rev up to full. Rebuild carb and checked lines. Same thing when completed. It ever crossed my mind that it could be the gas tank vent filter. Thank you.
@angloedu5499 Жыл бұрын
My friend had a Stihl weedcutter from 1980’s. He removed the gas air filter and made one out of a window screen mesh leftover. He just layered the mesh with three layers, crossing over the layers. It works fine and he saved a little bit by keeping the trimmer. It works fine with the fuel mixture for the 2 cycle engine.

I fixed small engine equipment in the past and now do it on the side for fun. One note about that echo brand is they use a hose and vent system...so the gas cap is not vented...thats the difference...like a mower gas cap is vented....and some chainsaws too...on a trimmer you may turn it sideways or upside down so im guessing they made it that way so no gas will ever come out of your gas cap.

One thing that I can hear is that the idle is too high! The first thing that you want to do to a 2-stroke engine is stop the trimmer head from spinning or if it is a chainsaw you need to turn the idle down until the chain stops spinning! When you have a high idle setting your already in to the off idle circuit! And that causes a dead spot when you clobber the throttle! That throttle plate needs to be closed to where if you look inside the throttle bore on the same side that the high and low jet is on you will see two little holes! One on the front side of the throttle plate is direct vacuum and is your low speed and if you crack open the throttle plate you will see another hole on the back side and that is your metered vacuum and opens the high speed.The throttle plate needs to be closed until it is in the middle of these two little holes in order to have transfer from low to high vacuum signal. 😉

I learned that the carb. vent in the white cap assy. may be defective and not allow the "Throttle - up" condition. By unplugging it as seen in the video, it allows air to pass into the tank. I thought it was the opposite- that it vented outwards towards atmospheric air to equalize the pressure inside the tank from over pressurizing for safety. Thank You.

Theres always a problem with fuel lines expanding sucking air get the clear 3mm hose and use like bread twister to clamp them never tried the breather trick always thought the oil wasn't mixed enough in the gas. Looks like the oil separates in the gas can a little

A common problem is when people blow out the little screen inside the carburetor and flatten it out with extreme air pressure. Some of them aren’t actually screens, they’re a little plates with louvers stamped in them so small that they’re hard to see. If you sweep across them with hard air pressure it’s just like bending all the fans on the back of your air conditioner it’s not gonna work right

If some carb cleaner won't clean the debris off the screen then you need to replace it.

Very good instruction video, except.,,,,,, I had a problem with lighting a torch so close to an active fuel tank, lines, and the drips of gas blown out of the fuel lines.

@@helpinguonline I'm a handy guy and have fancied myself as being able to learn to repair my own 2-cycle and 4-cycle gas tools but it hasn't gone well for me to date. The 2-cycle tools are the truly tough ones, compounded by ethanol fuel and its detrimental effects. Before one learns how to repair them, one needs to learn everything about all of the parts and what can go wrong with any of them. Only then can one be able to go about troubleshooting. I've found that a pedestrian knowledge of 2-cycle engines won't help e.g. assuming issues with clogged fuel filters and carburetors to correct restricted fuel flow, and squirting anything that moves with carburetor cleaner by itself won't help. But your video is one of the best places to start. Thanks again and Good Luck.

Brilliant! My vent line has a tiny chrome screw screwed into it instead of the filter that you have yet someone tells me that's okay. Can anyone explain that please? Also, someone says his mower won't work unless on choke, but obviously it's a four stroke so what could be causing that? Thanks.

Probably a faulty fuel solenoid on the lawnmower carburetor. I've seen that before. That screw in your vent line is probably not ok. My guess is someone working on it plugged the line with a screw and forgot to remove it.
@banjoman6223 Жыл бұрын
Btw if you want to test whether the little chrome screw should be there, try removing the screw and see if that makes it run better. If it does then you need a vent. If your piece of equipment mentioned runs good then don't worry about the screw.

Thanks for the video, question Echo SRM 230 will start only if sprayed with carb. cleaner..what may something for me to check. Again, thanks and God Bless

Well then obviously you have spark… For some reason you’re not getting fuel. Start simple by checking your fuel filter, fuel lines for cracks or kinks… Etc. if not that then it may be your carburetor needs cleaning or rebuilding. Check your metering diaphragm and make sure it is rubbery and flexible and not stiff And also that the screen in the carburetor is not clogged. God bless you and lead you…
