How to Replace a Broken Kia Door Handle

In this video I'll replace a broken Kia door handle on my 2013 Sorento. This applies to all Kia Sorento models between 2011-2015 specifically, but it may work on other years/models as well. Total cost to replace this handle was around $14.00 at the time of filming and it took about 10 minutes. I believe the only tools used were a Philips screwdriver and a pair of pliers.

I was quoted $300 to fix this. $12 part from Amazon …,10minutes to install….Bob’s you’re uncle. One tip is don’t back the set screw too far because it will catch on the edge of the hole that it passed through making it impossible to tighten back through the hole. I had to widen the hole to allow it to pass. Thanks so much for this Vid!!!

Ok, I just rewatched it. Yes, she actually alludes to this in the video when she says to back the screw off until it’s flush. I backed it off too far and it would not reenter the hole until I enlarged it.

I love your content. This happened to me lastnight & I was in utter shock. Thank goodness you made it look so easy to replace& you were very clear about making certain to order the correct door handle & gasket if necessary. @@AC-qv4ij Omg girl the handle is half way connected to car. It appears nothing wrong with the handle until you pull the handle to get inside the car. One side is attached the other side is broken so I have to be extra careful when opening

Real nice clear and simple video. How about the driver's side door handle - the door will lock using the key - BUT - after the dealer replaced the door latches ( recall ) the door will ONLY lock with key, not the fob. I can plainly hear a rattle when opening and closing the door - did the tech forget to attach rods - and is it necessary to remove the entire door panel to figure this out? The way things stand, not only did the tech screw things up - he also forgot to put the screw back in to secure the cylinder - I can now remove the entire lock cylinder as easy as picking my nose. No, I won't return because he wants to charge me to 'diagnose' the problem - even after I've sent photos of what's going on.

I’m not sure what the mechanical problem is, probably a rod that is not reattached like you said. In any case, the door panel will need to come off to access those components.

That is usually either the window regulator or the power window motor. We produce videos as we do work on our own cars so we kind of have to wait till a problem crops up to make a new video. Hope that helps!

Look on Amazon at the different options, a new handle should come with a new washer if you buy a kit that indicates that it comes with one.

Great video. This happened to my 2016 sorento recently. I think kia got wind on the simplicity on fixing this and decided to take away that access hole because mine doesn't have one. Looks like I got to figure out how to take off the inside panel. Any tricks on how to do this?

Sorry, I don’t have access to a 2016 or newer model. Usually though there were a couple of attaching screws somewhere on the panel, sometimes behind plastic cover. Remove those after you find them and lift the panel up and away from the door.

I’m not sure, but I would start by looking through any mounting holes on the exterior of the door to see if I could get a tool in there to activate the latch

Sometimes the new handle will come with a gasket, and other times you have to reuse your old one. If you’re already threw your old one away shop around for one that definitely comes with a new gasket.

That gasket typically helps keep moisture out of the inside of the door. This one looks like it also cushions the handle when it slams against the base when you let go of the handle. While you can have functionality without it, I’d go ahead and order one and install it whenever it becomes available.

We found that so long ago I don’t recall if the new handle came with a gasket or if we reuse our old one. Ironically, I can tell this one is about to break so the next time I replace it for the third time, I will see if the new handle comes with the piece of rubber.

When the link opens scroll down it shows what ppl normally purchased with the handled and the pad was on there. The padding should be here tomorrow!! Yeah!! So on my wife's 2010 Sportage the driver's side door handle broke off, the part that you put the key into is still intact. It looks like the rest of it where it broke off is still inside screwed on. I'm guessing I will need to take that broken piece out before I replace the handle. Will removing the screw inside allow me to take the broken part out?

Hard to say without a picture. Check to see if it looks like the screw side lines up with the broken piece side. If so, chances are when you take the screw out the broken piece will come off.

The screw will not line up with the hole on the back of the new part that I bought. Something is out of line because the screw will not hit the hole right to catch the threads. Anyone else have this problem?

If the replacement part is manufactured correctly and there is no damage in the door area, I would think it almost hasto go together. Have you tried angling the screw just a bit to see if you can get the threads to engage?

@@pinkcaddygarage267 Yes - I have seen another video where someone had to take a rotary tool to their new part to modify it enough to fit. Most are cheap Chinese crap so I suspect quality varies.

Probably looked easier on the video because that was the second time that handle had been replaced so the screw probably wasn’t “factory tight”

You need to get a screwdriver that fits perfectly into that screw or else you could end up stripping the head of the screw. Have someone on the other side of the door to brace it and then put all your weight into it while you’re trying to get it to break loose.

Of course the dealer will probably have one. As a real first choice though, I would take the door panel off, it can’t be that hard, because I wouldn’t want that thing rattling around in there. As a second choice, you could take the screw out of the other door and take it up to a hardware store and try to match it up.

I haven’t run into that problem. Make sure you have the new handle pushed forward so that it is locked in the place as shown on the video if that is done properly and you don’t have any mechanical damage inside to the latch it should operate the latch from that simple action.

The exterior door handle is not broken. When unlock, not able to open from outside. I would have to open from the door behind the drivers side…

On some vehicles, the handle is connected to a rod that operates the mechanism. It’s possible that Rod has become unhooked. You’ll need to take the door panel off to take a look.

It’s hard to say without seeing the car. This video specifically focuses on when the handle breaks, but there are also parts inside the door that can break.
