I've done many pinion seals on many makes (I own a rear end and gear service), and one thing to know is, to use loctite on the pinion nut. You do not need any silicon sealer, unless there are unusual pits or scars from removing the original seal. An impact gun will generally tighten the nut right where it needs to be unless your pinion bearings are shot, and if they are, a pinion seal won't help you.

How can you tell if it is pinion bearings ? I have some play pushing up and down on drive shaft at pinion flange . Someone said could be crush washer ? Removed cover and appears OK no metal shavings . thanks

Thank you sir. I am ready to replace the pinon seal in the 96 Tahoe. (G80 Locker) Been working on cars for years but first time to remove axles/seals and the pinon. Always was afraid I'd mess something up, or get the nut too tight. Your method is what everyone else recommends , mark it and measure threads, and nut distance. I feel confident that with your videos help I will have no problems. Please keep the videos coming and have a great day!!

What happens if you don't mark the yoke?
@vela074 жыл бұрын
You mark the yoke and flange together so that they go back in the same spot. If b you don't you could get vibration that wasn't previously there

@dan432134 жыл бұрын
Why does everyone mark everything? Just look up torque settings and torque it? When new everything is tight, but after wear and tear torque requirements change.
@vela074 жыл бұрын
It's not a specific torque on this nut. Its preload and to do it right you have to use a special tool to measure the torque required to keep the pinion turning. Then you tighten the nut in small increments until you hit that same preload
@vela074 жыл бұрын
I think you can use a torque wrench with the dial on it instead of a clicker type
