According to my Hayward manual you have the white impeller ring on backwards. If you look at the end of the ring it says this end toward the strainer basket.

John Essley Very good catch John, the impeller ring is backwards in the video. We took this pump apart several times in the shooting of this video and it looks like our tech messed up one of our takes. We will work to correct the video. Thanks for keeping us on our toes!

I have the same pump housing as what's shown, I don't know if the actual pump motor is the same. I have a 2.20 Century ST1152. Can you tell me if a go-kit2 still will fit this before I take this unit apart? The housing is a super II.
@Inyopools9 жыл бұрын
+Karen Miller Yes the GOKIT2 is the correct gasket kit for the Hayward Super II. If you have a saltwater pool I suggest using the GOKIT2SALT which comes with a heavy duty shaft seal. GOKIT2: www.inyopools.com/Products/00500022000634.htm GOKIT2SALT: www.inyopools.com/Products/00100017069792.htm

Does it matter which way the Impeller Wear Ring faces?, I've seen other videos which show the ring with the fatter end facing out.
@Inyopools9 жыл бұрын
Acme1970 Yes it does matter the orientation of the impeller wear ring's lip. The lip of the wear ring should be butting against (or close to) the diffuser rather than the impeller disk. Good eye, catching the little flaw in our video.
@mytube4119 жыл бұрын
+Inyo Pools I was just thinking the same thing, LOL. Also, isn't there supposed to be a rubber gasket on the end of the diffuser which goes into the pump housing? It's not on there when you pulled out the diffuser. Who the heck put that pump together!? LOL. EDIT: Oh wait, I see you added one at the 6:00 minute mark. But it wasn't on the diffuser when you removed it from the impeller housing at the beginning of the video.
@Montery127 жыл бұрын
And, if the fatter side of the impeller gasket is against the impeller disk as you have it, will it also cause a slight leak under the house pump? That is the way I have it as shown and the housing assembly is letting out slight leaking. Thank you.
@fangorn10007 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing. good video.

I am assuming your bolt tight count sequence starts as no. 1 from the left and it goes around to right for 6, right? Or, it doesn't matter which bottom end you start count as long as you follow sequence?
@Inyopools7 жыл бұрын
We will typically start one bolt and then go diagonally and then start the opposite one. For example, start with the bottom left and then go diagonally to the top right. Do the same for the bottom right and top left. Then you can tighten the middle bolts if your pump has those.

Good video, except I agree with comment below. Never!!! use a screwdriver or anything metal to seat the white ceramic seal! Also, while you already have it all apart, replace the diffuser seal and the housing seal. They come in a "seal kit" with the shaft seal. Just a few more $ to do them all.

Do shaft seals come in1/2 inch and 5/8?
@Inyopools4 жыл бұрын
There are shaft seals for 1/2" shafts. The 5/8" shaft seal is more common for pool and spa motors.
@lozarok9 жыл бұрын
hey mate , what do you do when the pump has been in service for some time and you can't get the impellor off ?
@Inyopools9 жыл бұрын
+lozarok The first thing I would try is a strap wrench because they they are the least likely to hurt the impeller. I have had people tell me to use WD-40 but it is almost impossible to get the spray to the threads of the impeller. Vice grips can also be used but they pose a higher probability to cause damage to the impeller. If vice grips grips do not work, get a hammer and prepare to buy a new impeller. ;)

Cheers for the info mate !!!!

I just did all this and water comes out around the motor. The lady at Leslies pool took the white seal out while I was in the store and pushed it in with here fingers. Is this why I have a leak? And mine was just rubber or plastic, not anything even remotely close to ceramic.

+james collier I know (ugh!) not our finest moment. For this particular video we had one of our video guys to do the shaft seal swap out and he did not do it accurately in that section. For all of our video's since this video we have our pool techs in the video. We plan on re-shooting this video during the off season. Thanks for the comment!

So HOW DO YOU get the seal onto the impeller without breaking anything? My seal is not going on properly! I could put it on upside down, and it would seat easily.
@Inyopools5 жыл бұрын
Did you completely remove the old shaft seal from the impeller? Sometime a metal cuff will stick to the shaft of the impeller. It looks like it may belong but it needs to be removed. We discuss this in the new shaft seal video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6DcZGejn8RqitE

Clear concise How-TO video of how to repair a Hayward pool pump. Just one thing that is distracting - the "Rack Focus" technique that the camera operator used was used a little often. IMO, the operator should keep close-up details in focus, rather than "Rack" the focus point away and making things OOF (out of focus). Otherwise, the video was helpful towards understanding how to fix the Hayward pump.
@Inyopools10 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian thanks for the input we will keep that in mind when we create out next video.

what happens if you tighten the bolts in any pattern other than the order shown? will it leak?
@Inyopools9 жыл бұрын
+Deanna "babygirl1213" Hudson A bad shaft seal should not cause a loss of prime. A bad pump lid gasket, diffuser gasket, or union/valve gaskets before the pump is a more likely source. I just performed this service to my pump today...when I turned pump on the waste basket compartment filled with smoke!! I shut it off and took it all apart again. The porcelain seal that you press in behind impeller was toast. It got so hit and cooked the rubber seal around it ruining the part. I am so confused to what I did wrong!?
@Inyopools9 жыл бұрын
+joegolden481 I would confirm proper seal installation as well as diffuser impeller alignment. Friction and running dry for extended periods would be the only things that would be able to cause that type of reaction around the mechanical seal.

Good video but you should never touch the white part of the shaft seal with a screw driver or any tools or your hand (fingers)It should be pushed in with out touching the white part of the seal very carefully any scratch or body oil on the seal and it will go bad.Use a piece of cardboard or the plastic it came in to push it in and some seals come with a little lube kits but only to be used on the black rubber part on the back side of the seal.I just wanted to give a little of my info just to help out :)
@Inyopools8 жыл бұрын
+ddanster91 Thank you for the comment and we do realize our video makes the mistake of using a screwdriver to install the shaft seal. That's a price we paid for using presenters instead of using our actual on-staff techs. We do have annotation in the video stating it is not the correct way to install a shaft seal but the note does not show up on the KZbin phone app. We will be posting a new How to Replace a Pool Pump Shaft Seal video soon. The new video will be new, improved, and accurate. Thanks again for the comment.

Just once, I would like to see a realistic how-to video. The kind of video that depicts how a real home owner would be replacing a part. A video where the pump motor is wedged between a sand filter and a brick wall with the PVC plumbing and wiring connected (power disconnected at the breaker of course), and not completed removed and sitting on a workbench. Then you would see it takes longer than 8 minutes and 12 seconds to replace this part. If want to make it a night time repair because you had to get the kids to bed and have 100 percent humidity at 8:26pm, then it would be even more realistic. Thanks. Now back to my shaft seal repair.

Hi, the oils on your skin can break down and degrade the shaft seal over time. Our updated shaft seal video mentions this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6DcZGejn8RqitE
@brookwade29757 жыл бұрын
That is not how to replace a seal. The rubber gasket that goes around ceramic should also been replaced. In the hayward go-kit it all comes as one part. You surely don't force it in with a screwdriver and needle nose pliers. This guy really got it wrong. I've done it for thirty-five years
@Inyopools7 жыл бұрын
+Brook Wade you are absolutely correct. We had one of our Non-Pool guys do this video and he definitely got that part wrong (screwdriver part... ugh!).
