If you're replacing the radiator with a new one chances are it will need new hangers, so where's the tricky part trying to marry it up with the existing pipework. B&Q trying to make it so simple 😩

What I do is put the hangers on the back of the new radiator and measure down from the screw holes on the hangers to the bottom of the radiator where the valves will connect. Then measure from the valves on the pipes the same distance up the wall, mark the same distance and that’s where you should put the screw on the wall for the hanger. Draw a level line and measure the distance to the other hanger screw hole. It doesn’t have to be 100% perfect because the pipes coming from the floor/wall should have a little bit of give. Just ensure you’re central. Always good to mark a centre point on the wall too.

Don't need to tape the valve threads, if anything tape over the olive - as that is where the seal is formed

After shutting both valves release pressure in the rad via the bleed screw. Crack both tail nuts and lift the rad off the mounts then rotate the rad so the tails are at the highest point. Disconnect the tails and the water stays in the rad. Much cleaner way of getting it off the wall.

If in cramped bathroom for example you will be unable to lower it into your knees! Also even a small radiator is heavy enough to put strain on pipework via using valves as pivots. There is a kids book about a spot of ink spread eventually throughout the house. Not unknown for a simple repair to escalate into a major life changing event. Keep it simple. Apparently all type 21 are same bracket heights. Apparently allegedly.
