How To Replace A Rear Power Window Regulator - Dodge Durango (’98-‘03) & Dakota Quad Cab (’00-‘04)

This video covers how to replace a broken rear passenger power window regulator on an '03 Dodge Durango. This video applies to all Dodge Durango's between 1998 & 2003, as well as Dodge Dakota's with a rear passenger door (i.e. Quad Cab) between 2000 & 2004. The only differences may be the steps to remove the door panel.
The window regulator I am replacing is the left rear passenger window, but the steps & techniques are the same for the right rear passenger window.
This is a fairly basic & simple job that can be done in about a half hour, even if you take your time, with simple hand tools & a spatula. The stock & aftermarket window regulators for these vehicles have plastic components that like to break at the worst possible time.

I always replace my own window regulators since they seem to go out once in a while in one of my cars. First, I try to find a good video so that I know what I will be encountering. Thanks for the instructional video! Now I've replaced the regulator on both rear windows on my 2001 Durango. I get the feeling this is a common repair. I taped the windows the first time but the block of wood also works well.

I'm not sure what you mean by the vent window. There is no vent window on a Dakota/Durango of this vintage. The drivers/passenger window is a solid piece of glass. Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you mean by vent window?

Nice Informative video EXCEPT, you should just have taped the window in the up position with painters tape or masking tape to have it out of the way instead of using a wooden block. Good job!

+Mark Stoltz, yeah that works too. However, I've had tape fail on me before on a freshly cleaned window. So I prefer a more positive support. Yeah, the wood can get in the way a little, but its not too bad. I used to have a 1" OD, 1' L PVC pipe with a notch cut in one end for the window to rest in that was worked even better but it was lost in a move many years ago and I haven't made a new one yet.

If the cord came out or plastic piece broke, I would expect the window to drop not stay up. Tension on the cable is what keeps the window up. If that tension is lost then the window drops. However, if the window is stuck up due to mechanical malfunction, I would just cut the cable so I could get the window down in order to unbolt it and remove/replace the regulator.

Look in the box and make sure that part comes with hardware (bolts) the new parts are metal at the motor the org is plastic, took 2 hrs to find the right metric size and thread to fit the new part.

Typically the part comes in a box with a sealed bag inside. If its still sealed then you should have all the parts. But definitely double check. Good tip/point.

Has anyone had an issue with the new replacement regulator not going down properly has making a clicking sound or acting like it is catching on something?

I have not. However, if that is happening you should fix it sooner rather then later. Too much tension can cause the plastic bits in the regulator to break. Take the door panel off and see what it is binding against. It could be a misplaced cable getting in the way, or the side rails may be dirty and not allowing the window to slide properly etc. No way to tell from our keyboards. You will have to investigate. Good luck.

Yes, this video and the window regulator shown in it is for the the rear drivers window. The procedure is the same for the rear passenger side window, but the part number is likely different.

I had my 03 Dakota Quad cab since it was new. All four have been replaced at least once. Two have been replaced twice. Use a Dorman regulator, don’t buy that cheap crap. But why are these regulators so shit? Plastic parts are the culprit. If these were all metal they’d last for years. Thanks for the info, great job.

Its not Dorman. The OEM regulators have the same plastic parts. At least Dorman has a lifetime warranty so if it breaks you can bring it back where you bought it for a new one for free. I've done that twice with my truck. Buy once, replace hundreds of times.

@@johnd193, manufacturers are going more and more plastic because its cheaper than metal. So I wouldn't be surprised if its worse in newer vehicles, but I haven't really looked or taken a poll.
