This video is a step by step guide on how to replace a broken front power window regulator on an '03 Dodge Durango. This video applies to all Dodge Durango's between 1998 & 2003, as well as Dodge Dakota’s between 2000 & 2004. The only differences may be the steps to remove the door panel.
The window regulator I am replacing is the front drivers side window, but the steps & techniques are the same for the front passenger window.
This is a fairly basic & simple job that can be done in about a half hour, even if you take your time, with simple hand tools. The stock & aftermarket window regulators for these vehicles have plastic components that like to break at the worst possible time.

I just came in from fixing the front passenger window in my quad cab '04 Dakota. I used a NAPA motor & regulator assembly (made by Dorman in Taiwan). The local Dodge stealership wanted $322 for the part and $200 for labor. The part from NAPA was $90. My father helped me, which was good to have a second pair of hands and eyes. First off, this video is excellent. The information, production, narration, lighting, and editing are all well done and result in a video that is professional and helpful. A couple of observations from my efforts today: It took me and my father about 1.5 hours to do the whole job, taking our time, and rechecking the video a few times. It lasted the length of "The Lion King," which I had my kids watching to keep them out of the way. I watched this video on my laptop originally. I brought my tablet outside for reference during the repair. The plastic liner may be tucked behind the speakers, and tightened down. Loosening the speaker allowed the plastic to be pulled off. Also, the temperature outside today was about 40-45 degrees Fahrenheit (4-5 degrees Celsius). The black "elephant snot" adhesive was very stiff and held very stoutly. I don't know if it would be easier to remove during the summer, or in a heated garage. The replacement motor came with it's own bolts (that were 10mm). The factory bolts were of a different thread pattern (and were 8mm). The replacement assembly also came with instructions in English and Espanol. They make sense if you have watched this video a few time. According to the instructions from Dorman, there are two body styles/motor mounts that you have to watch for. They were kind enough to enclose a template. My Dakota was slightly different in the details than Pet Rock's Durango (which made no sense to me). Instead of using the block of wood to hold the window up, I taped the window in the fully up position. This was because I didn't have a block of wood short enough, and I was too lazy to cut the wood. Taping the window all the way up ended up giving me the advantage of keeping the window out of the way. Examining the broken regulator, the up cable's end pulled out of the plastic part of the window shuttle (not sure if this is the real term, but I am describing the thingey that the window rests on and travels in the metal track). Amazing how a tiny bit of plastic breaking requires the replacement of the entire assembly. I look forward to more videos from Pet Rock. Hopefully he will need to change his brake rotors and his rack & pinion soon...

+Bob Jaan, I’m glad my video helped you out and saved you a ton of cash. The “elephant snot” is a lot more malleable in warmer weather. I’m not sure what the template is for. I assumed it was for vehicles that are converting from roll up windows to electric windows, or ones with a different mounting holes. I’m not sure which vehicles that is though. Thanks for wishing ill will upon my truck and its brake rotors and rack & pinion. :-)

I had already had it replaced by my local glass replacement company 5 years ago . I had to purchase it because they didn't stock it. With a lifetime guarantee the part was free this time! Even though I'm pretty well equipped and capable with tools I let them do it because working inside the door can be a time consuming skin tearing knuckle buster. Thanks to you never again! With your detailed instructions it was cake! (Even though my window was stuck halfway down!) That added some time but all in all an easy process with excellent results. Thanks a million. Well, about 500 anyhow :)

Today I just changed the regulator AGAIN and it was even easier. I like your videos because you are a good narrator. Not everyone is as thorough as you are. Thanks for that. By the way, I have the very same year, make, model, and color Dodge Durango as you do. So when I watch you work on your Durango, it's like your using mine in the video. I just think that's cool. Thats great! I'm glad my video helped you out. Yes, using tape to hold the window up will (sometimes) work. I choose to use the wood technique because tape often has a hard time sticking to dirty windows or windows with a bunch of finger prints on them. I don't want the window to suddenly fall and possibly break inside the door. Plus duct-tape isn't that great for paint. I'd use painters tape if I had to. But if it worked for you and you are happy with it, by all means continue to use that technique.

Pet Rock's Garage I got it installed but the cables are catching while going up and down. any suggestions?
@petrocksgarage
@petrocksgarage 9 жыл бұрын
frank izaguirre, the cables should be between the regulator and the door sheet metal. If the cables are on the other side (between the regulator and the window) then you may have gotten the regulator for the wrong side (drivers side vs passenger side). If not, there should be a zip tie or clip or something in the middle of the regulator that the cables go through that should keep them close to the regulator so they aren’t flopping around. You can kind of see it (a white zip tie) on my old regulator at around 6:00 in the video. Good luck...

Pro tip from an idiot who drove around with non-functional windows for 6 months: Instead of using a 2x4 to prop the window up, an easy option is to use a suction-cup shower safety bar attached to the inside of the window to hold it up. I keep one in my car because my Durango has gone through a few of these window mechanisms and it always seems to happen when I am out in a shady area 😂 Thank you so much for your video. I am going to try to replace my drivers side window mech soon!
@petrocksgarage
@petrocksgarage Жыл бұрын
Yes they do tend to break in the worst parts of town, or when bad weather is rolling in. Thats a good tip. Another commenter suggested multiple suction cups with hooks on the inside & outside of the glass with a string going over the top to connect them all to hold the window up. Haven't tried it yet since I haven't had to replace a regulator on this truck in a couple years (thankfully), but the idea seems promising. Thanks for the tip.

Your instructions were very clear. It's terrible that the part keeps breaking. I hope that you have reported this to the manufacturer. Even though they keep replacing the broken ones, it's using your time. Also, if a person can't do it themselves, that would be three expensive service payments.

+Dana Kerry, thanks. No I haven’t contacted the manufacturer. I figure that after enough are replaced under warranty across the country for the same problem the bean counters at the company will notice the $$$ loss and tell the engineers to fix the design flaw.

Pet Rock, nice video, need to do this to my 01 durango tomorrow. By looking at other videos as well, may I offer the quick tip of using painters tape to keep the window all the way up (closed) while doing this to keep the glass out of the way. See 1AAuto's video. Just thought it would give a little more room, especially without the 2x4 in the way.
@petrocksgarage
@petrocksgarage 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks I appreciate it. Yeah, I've seen that video. I've tried painters tape before and had it fail, the window suddenly drop and the window shatter inside the door. If the window isn't perfectly clean painters tape won't stick very well or hold for very long, in my experience. So I just use a block of wood. It doesn't really get in the way, IMO. You can use thinner wood, like 1" square stock or something even thinner. Its the length & rigidity of the wood that matters. I said 2x4 because it is a pretty common term that most people will understand.

I've looked at a lot of videos before coming across yours. By far the easiest step by step video out there. I actually took my laptop to the garage, set it on the driver seat and went to work. With the exception of scratching my tinted window on that side everything went as planned. Now if I could just get the front passenger window to roll down from the passenger side. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but it always will roll down from the drivers side control. Any ideas? Thanks again
@petrocksgarage

I'm glad my video helped you out. The passenger side window issue is a common problem with the Window Lock-Out circuit on this era truck. If my hunch is correct, you'll notice that the passenger side window switch doesn't glow green when the problem occurs. If so, try toggling the Window Lock-Out button on the drivers door switch and see if that helps. If it does then the solder joint for the button is likely cracked and just needs to be resoldered. Mine had this problem a number of years ago and I fixed it with a little solder. If the toggling the button doesn't help then its likely a wiring problem that would need investigation. Hope that helps and good luck.

+Steve Hartman, you can't buy just the end. Trust me a looked. You can only get the window regulator as an assembly. Depending on where the break is you might be able to superglue the plastic piece that broke. But i would consider that a temporary fix. Good luck...

Hello and thank you for your very instructive vid! My window regulator cable snapped and I just bought a brand new regulator motor assembly. It was extremely easy to take out and install but I have a very annoying problem! The window guide slider keeps coming into contact with the cables for some reason. I tried different orientations of twisting the motor but that was even worse. I can't use twist ties to get from the guide because it needs the freedom to move! I'm getting really frustrated on what to do at this point! Any help would be very appreciated!
@petrocksgarage
@petrocksgarage 2 жыл бұрын
Assuming you got the correct assembly for the door in question, it sounds like the cables are twisted up a little. They shouldn't come in contact with the guide. It is possible to install it twisted and have it bind up like you describe. So I'd take the regulator out again and hold it and the motor up as if they were installed and see if there is a twist or some indication of why the cables are binding. Its really hard to diagnose from my keyboard. Good luck.

@petrocksgarage
@petrocksgarage 8 жыл бұрын
+gary curnow., there are two cables in the regulator that I show in the video. If the one that holds the window up is still intact and the the one that pulls the window down is broken, you should be able to press the down button on the window switch while pushing the window down with your hand. if both cables are still intact and you want to replace the entire window regulator, you could cut the cables with some wire cutters to free the window. Good luck...

Your hunch is correct, the switch is not glowing green like the door lock button is. I've toggled the window lock out button without success. Where exactly is the solder joint your referring to?. Can you send a pic or be more specific? Thanks again
@petrocksgarage
@petrocksgarage 8 жыл бұрын
The solder joint is on the circuit board inside the drivers door switch. Is where the button attaches to the circuit board. Sorry, I don't have a picture of the circuit board. I fixed mine years ago before I set up my KZbin channel. But before jumping to the conclusion that its the solder joint on the circuit board, you should make sure that the wire that goes between the window lock-out button and the passenger door switch isn't broken or have excessive resistance with a multimeter. It is just as likely that the wire is broken/damaged as the solder joint is cracked since the wire does go through two door wire looms that are known to get flexion cracks/damage. Good luck.

First things first...thanks SO MUCH for posting this! You gave this mom the confidence to replace this part on my son's '04 Dakota, which had already had a failure in the driver's door just 2 months ago, and cost us big bucks to have repaired. This time, the passenger-side rear door regulator broke, which was estimated to be a $175 repair. With the help of your video, I removed the broken one & installed the new one in 1 hour, at a cost of $35. I did encounter 1 problem, which I can only blame on myself. When I tried to "snap" one of the actuator rods/arms back into its clip, I cracked the plastic clip.! Can that part be replaced? What is it actually called? Please help me again!

+Linda Davis, congrats on fixing your window yourself. I have a video covering the rear door too (kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGPWfJenZ7ibnrM). I’m not sure what the part you broke is called. You can call or go to your local dealers parts department and they can look it up based on your VIN. Most likely its a dealer only part or you could try your local junk yard. Good luck...

I have found a trick to hold the window up while you order the part or instead of the handy 2x4 ? Buy tow or three od the old rubber door stops for a home door , they are wedge shaped rubber and when you pull the glad up and push them down on the inside of the top of the door panel you can't push the glass down . Neat trick for a couple of $1.00 door stops ?
@petrocksgarage
@petrocksgarage 7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I follow. You jam the door stops in between the window and the door frame up at the top (where you rest your arm while driving)? If so, yeah, thats a pretty good idea. Just make sure to remove the weathers tripping in that area or you could deform/damage it. Thanks for the tip.

My window will only go up about 80% of the way. Anything you can think of that I did wrong? It feels like the cable on the left of the metal frame gets super tight. Is that cable suppose to be in front of back of that Frame? Every time I have it in front the window will only go up 50% of the way not sure what I'm Doing wrong
@petrocksgarage
@petrocksgarage 8 жыл бұрын
Its hard to say what is wrong without looking inside the door to see what is causing the window to bind up. The cables are supposed to be between the window regulator frame and the inner door panel. I'd have a look inside and see what is binding up. Don't try to force it or you'd likely break the plastic bits in the window regulator. Good luck.

Can someone help me out? So I just bought my first truck, it's an 01 Ram and the driver side door works to go down but it will only go up a centimeter at a time maybe one per half an hour. I'm not sure if this is the problem or the motor it self and I really don't have the money to play a guessing game. I have to press the up button and pull the glass up at the same time to get it to go up and it can take upwards of 2 hours. I know its not a dakota or durango, but I'm assuming those symptoms will be the same for all of them depending on what is actually wrong with it. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
@petrocksgarage
@petrocksgarage 9 жыл бұрын
Mike Roche, its hard to diagnose things like that from a keyboard. Your best bet is to take the door panel off and have a look inside. It should be fairly similar inside to what the inside of my door looks like. Something is binding up and not letting the window slide smoothly. Maybe the felt in the window track is rotted out (common), something is getting in the way of the window regulator (also common), or the window regulator motor is going bad, or there is excessive resistance in the up position circuit giving enough power to the window motor. The list goes on. Good luck...
