This is the replacement switch I used → amzn.to/2wWEKTC
If your machine is not draining, or not moving on to the agitating cycle, or spin cycle, you could have a broken lid switch. As a safety feature, when the lid switch is broken the machine won't advance past the FILL stage. If you open and close the lid and don't hear a 'click' it's most likely broken. You will need a new lid switch and as you see in my video, I also needed a connector because it was burnt up and fused to the switch. If you have any questions just ask in the comments section.
The machine in this video is a MTW5870TW0
The Lid Switch is Whirlpool part number 8318084

I love that this looks like a real washing machine, in a real situation -- not in a well-lit room with nothing surrounding the machine, and all parts sliding on/off easily.

Thank you so much Adam! Our top load washing machine is filling but not always agitating but when I (sort of) bang hard on the lid, it will then engage. And it will sometimes stop again, and again I need to bang hard on the lid. So, I think it's the lid switch. I'm going to watch the video with my ten year old son and hopefully, we'll be able to find the part, replace it successfully, and no longer have to bang hard on the lid! Thank you so, so much for providing your videos! I just discovered your channel after conducting a Google search for how to fix our washing machine and am so thankful I did!

Thank you for the viedo. With your help replacing the faulty lid switch took less than 15 mins. I used a spatula to pop the two clips so lifting the console was a breeze. Hardest part was reinstalling the clips from underneath. I had hoped the console would just snap back into place but it wouldn't lock so I had to install the clips from inside the washer. Repair guy wanted $100 just to come out and diagnose the problem. The switch cost me $10 on Amazon. That's a win all day, everyday in my book! Thanks again!!!

Just got my replacement switch from Amazon. Installed, and the washer now works like a champ. Thank you! Glad I watched your video a second time. It’s important to have the lid partially opened when removing/ replacing the switch. Under. $11, to repair a washer that I was about to trash.

Not sure why you struggle with adding the clip underneath after replacing the bad lid switch. I used your genius idea of using the spatula. This left the clips still attached to the top panel. I just put the back plastic clips in first and hinges the front down. Pushed the entire panel down and the clips clicked right in. Easy peasy! Great video!!

Great tutorial. The nut is a 5/16 - mine was so tight the pliers wouldn't budge - was a piece of cake with the socket. I used a wood shim as the spatula - but once moved, took the needlenose and hung on to the clips just in case - easy way to ensure it doesn't fall. Mine just snapped right back into place after pulling the control panel forward just a little and the clips reseated. Took less than 5 minutes - great video - switch is cheap. Fantastic!

When you struggled to get the melted connector apart me and my husband laughed out loud! We have a maytag centential and it just stopped working, we watched another video about a wire coming loose but our wires were fine and then my husband could not pull the connector off the lid switch and ours had melted too together! Your struggle was ours too lol hopefully we will find the parts and give it a go, its ten years old and I'm rooting for it for ten more if it fixes!

Thank You Adam DIY, You helped me tremendously. I have never attempted to try and fix my own machine, but being a senior and not having a handy man around, I phoned to see how much it would cost to fix my Maytag. Well it was $33 for part; labor $135 and no discount. another cost was come to the house and give an estimate cost is $65, if repaired I would have to use his part and then pay the hourly fee plus part. $$$!! So I viewed your video and I was able to do the job myself for $33. Your explanations were clear and understandable, each step clearly shown. THANK YOU. V. Thompson

Thanks so much for the video. I have an Estate machine but since it's made by Maytag this was the perfect video. I used method 2 to open the panel with a metal pancake flipper which worked like a dream and my clips were a bit different, they were smaller and locked in place. It was a breeze the only problem was the screw for the ground I had a really hard time loosening it, but it finally budged and replacement was great. I did forget to lift the lid but when I couldn't get the old one out then I remembered what you said. Did a test and it all works fine. The part cost 23.15 including shipping. My appliance people said it would be 100. or more. so thanks for saving me over 75. My tenant loves this machine and I'm not a fan of the new ones and I couldn't afford to buy new anyway so kudos to you. My tenant thinks we rock.

Thank you for this vid...especially the careful way you figured out to take the control panel out. I have a similar, but older model than what is in the video. I did not replace my switch I only bypassed it. With your help I had my switch bypassed and my unit reassembled and operating in like 10 minutes!
@Vmurph

How did you bypass the switch? Did you make it so that opening the lid no longer stops the washer? I’m very interested to know! Because I hate that washers turn off as soon as the lid is opened. Back in the old days, we could open the lid and toss in the socks we forgot without it stopping. If we wanted it to stop, we just pushed in the load selection DIAL and that worked just fine. I wish they still worked that way. Sometimes I need to *check* the agitation to make sure everything’s moving freely and not getting knotted together. But it’s like trying to open the refrigerator door to see if the light’s on. 😂

Thank you so much for this video, you bailed us out. I used the spatula way and it worked out fine. On a note, I found you don’t even have to removed or try and replace those half moon clips. Use the spatula, then when reassembling just line everything up and push down, now mind you I’d would have bloody knuckles and would have already spewed every swear word if I didn’t have your video. Thank you again

Great video. Thanks!! After breaking my head for a few minutes on how to remove the cover, I ran across this video. I immediately thought that the switch was bad, so I took it apart and tested it for sound. It was clicking, so I knew it was not the switch. I put everything back together and looked at the 2 screws that hold the lid/engage the switch. It turns out they were a bit loose so I gave them a snug and we are back on and running. Thanks again!

This is a great video and it helped me change out my lid switch. Unfortunately, I kept having the same problem. Finally figured out that the switch was never the problem - it was the screws that held the washer lid strike (the metal piece that engages the lid switch). The screws had over time become loose so they weren't engaging the lid switch properly. Thankfully, I only paid $7.80 for the switch (Amazon) and I learned how to do the repair if ever needed!

Thanks so much. The spatula did wonders on our Kenmore. I was able to use the spatula again when reinstalling the control panel. I put the clips in up top and then lowered it back down and used the spatula to push in the clips just enough to catch. I may have gotten lucky, but the clips stayed attached to the top part during removal as well. Fingers crossed the new lid switch holds up!

Mine started acting weird the other day, and it finally gave out today. The spring is black and smells burnt, but no damage to the rest of its housing, melting, etc. I'm hoping the new switch fixes it and it's not a symptom of something worse, like a motor pulling too much juice like some of the reviews I've seen on this particular switch.

Thank you so much. And you were correct in the hardest part of the fix is removing the clips. I put gorilla tape on the long end in case I dropped it. Which is easy to do. Fortunately putting them back is a cinch and my plug came off very easily from the switch. Got new switch on old faithful Amazon for $8 but rush shipped and still only $20. The Local supply specialist in town wanted $28. I could wait a couple days. Thanks again hope you put some neosporin on that cut. Almost got one myself.

Great video thanks. I also found that when i installed the new switch it still wasnt clicking and this was due to either the switch clip was to small or the slot too big to keep the switch pushed all the way back. In in other words the whole switch was moving not only the black plastic thing inside of it. To fix this i drilled a new hole for the ground terminal closer to the tab of the switch to use the head of the screw to push the tab some more.

Great video. Thankyou. Our switch didn't click but if we slammed the lid down really hard the washer would restart but it was taking harder and harder slams. We were able to buy the part for $43 (Canadian) equal to about $32 U.S (our part number was WP8318084 -it was a Whirlpool part in a Maytag washer). ONE SUGGESTION: when trying to reinstall the clips tie a string to the clip so that if you drop it you are not in a tough spot with the clip lost somewhere in the bottom of the washer. I used 1/2 knots that held when I dropped the clip but the knot was loose enough that I was still able to unknot it blind using just my fingers. Given how expensive service calls are and given that our washer was at that 5-7 year age we were likely going to just buy a new washer if it weren't for your video..

After taking mine apart and before I order a new switch I discovered that the switch was working fine. It was the springiness of the clip that held the switch in place. The clip part wasn't holding the switch tight enough. The whole thing was sliding up where the lever from the lid couldn't apply enough pressure. I fixed it by wedging a piece if wood into the clip hole to apply enough pressure to hold it from sliding. I also managed to slip a wire tie through two nearby holes over the wedge to hold it in place. So check this before ordering a new one. It'll save you few bucks.
