With everything I've seen on this issue, I wasn't confident with this fix. My local hardware store sold these exact collars at more than $6.00, EACH. I ordered the collars on Amazon, saved a bunch of money. I used blue thread locker liquid as I imagine it will help. Ive run 3 loads through this machine after adding the collars and the machine is nearly silent. I'm sitting here stupified. You're brilliant for figuring out a fix, and a dang ol peach for sharing it and documenting it so perfectly. Most importantly, my wife isnt going to be scared of the washer anymore, and I fixed it. 😅😊😅😅😊

This fix is genius. The manufacturer should add this to the washer design. I measured the thickness of 2 quarters as 0.130 inch which is slightly thicker than 1/8” = 0.125”. I then used calipers to check the gap width. Also, to ensure that the collar screws do not vibrate out, I added Threadlocking glue (the blue or orange version) where the screws can still be readjusted. Do not use the red version which is permanent.
@appliancerepairshorts10 ай бұрын

So, I fixed my Maytag using a combination of this method and another YT video tutorial. My rods didn’t have the upper tip part for the collar to grip on to, so I: -found 4 large safety pins -pulled open the upper white lid from casing -insert one safety pin through the bottom of the white plastic lid -cut safety pin on bottom (leaving the coil part) and bend coil flat -reconnect casing to white tip -cut electrical tape width in half and wrapped around the safety pin (to create a tip for the collar to lock on to) -installed the collar as instructed, with the >2 quarter gap -fold safety pin over collar gap -cut excess safety pin on top -pulled component down and applied grease Component was still able to slide and it fixed the issue! Update: So my washer started shaking again and I found a metal collar that had come loose. Only one collar came apart. I checked the other ones while I had it opened and the other collars seemed to be fine. They were tight but at a much higher point than where they were installed. It took a bit of force to push back down. Today I decided to purchase a whole new set of suspension rods and they have the upper tip that mine didn’t have. I’ll save the collars just in case I may need them in the future. Thank you to @appliancerepairshorts for sharing your knowledge and advice 🙏 I always think, “man, if I didn’t have KZbin then I would be at the mercy of some commission driven contractor, whose solution would be to buy a new unit.” My ‘fix’ did work great for 11 months though, so I am very grateful for that. Awesome! I'm a sucker for the simplicity of this. I have posted a different solution (I replace the "cup" with some epoxy; it holds the shape well and over a longer area against the rod). But your way also restricts the flow of grease between the rod and the piece of plastic. That's the magic! If the grease has broken down to yellow or brown, replace it (that will matter). This solution is easier to do than mine, though. I will try it on my next "bouncy house" washer! I'd be curious to see what happens if I do 2 rods this way and 2 rods my way in the same washer - which needs another "tweak," first. Seems like a science experiment I need to do on the next one ...
@appliancerepairshorts Жыл бұрын
Awesome to hear about your idea. You are absolutely correct about the cup. So if you only do two rods, if will not stop the bouncing. If you have a load in. I’m curious on the epoxy because some suspension rods you cannot install the collars on. Some other guy uses rubber .

Very good repair. The issue is the black rubber grommet beneath that white cap is intentionally undersized so that it can't slide easy on the shaft and acts like a shock absorber. Like on a car to keep it from bouncing on its springs. But it wears out. An easier fix is to pull up the white cap exposing the black grommet and wrap a copper or steel wire around it and twist the ends until it is tight on the rod again. There's enough room inside that white cap to trim the twisted wire and bent it over against the grommet so the white cap slides over the twisted wire and it looks like new.

@pearldrops22788 ай бұрын
I have 2 Samsung WA5200 machines and I replaced the rods with Chinese rods. They really didn't work and after watching many videos, I found yours. I had to use a 3/8" collar on the rods due to the larger size damper. I also had to replace the stock collar screws with #6x32x3/4 to allow for the girth of the fatter damper. I simply had to remove the back cover of the machines, which gave me access to the 2 rear rods without removing them. You CANNOT pre-install the clamps then rehang the rods because the damper won't fit back into the slotted flange on the tub where it is supposed to go when the clamps are installed. They must be installed with the rods hanging in place. Therein lies the problem. You cannot get access to the 2 front rods to install the clamps, unless you want to completely remove the tub first. So both machines have rather tight clamps on the 2 rear rods and none on the front 2. I have washed several horse blankets (one at a time) in the barn washer as well as other horse stuff about a half dozen times. NO MORE ERROR CODES so far. Thanks for sharing your expertise with us-It helped me solve a potentially costly fix.

just now completed this repair with recalibration and running our first load. so i guess we'll see how it goes. just wanted to say that at first i only bought 1 set of collars and 1/2 way through the repair i accidently striped the threads on 1 collar. it was very easy to do with barely any pressure,, "cheap Chinese steel"😖. had to purchase a 2nd set and wait another day to complete the repair. upon restarting low and behold the 1st collar i tried striped as well, thankfully this time i had 3 more as backup. so the moral of the story is purchase more than what you think you need, you can always return them if they're not needed.🤔

You know I thought I included something about the in the video, I need to watch it again. I talked about using longer screws. If you are not careful as in evenly spaced out you could strip the screws. Yeah everything is made cheap. Keep me posted on your results
@chaser93639 ай бұрын
@@appliancerepairshorts yeah,, I knew about evenly tightening the screws even before watching your vid,and I did do it properly with the 1st 2 but may have gotten a little over confident on the third one But as I said it was very easy, like almost no pressure at all and the threads just gave way. While on the others I was able to torque quite heavily with no problem. Therefore I put more blame on the inconsistency in quality of "Chinese" products. By the way, we did the first load and while it didn't go into a frenzied shake with that load it still shook pretty hard. Not sure if it was a normal shake or if maybe a different/heavier load would cause it to act up again. I also put a new metal hub in before this repair. That alone didn't work. Hopefully I'll get a good bit more use out of it. But if not we bought it used for $150 at least 5 years ago so if it's dead not a big deal, as I'd say we got our moneys worth.

@appliancerepairshorts3 ай бұрын
The problem is it is difficult to determine the exact load for a washer. Here is a way, starting with a supposedly small load. Once water has been added . Now pause the washer and push down on the basket. Can you feel the suspension moving? If you can’t push it down, you have too much weight. So remove some clothes and check again until you can feel the suspension moving as you push it down. Keep in mind that, the collar can be adjusted to increase tension.

@appliancerepairshorts Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, that seems like a lot of extra work. Not sure how that is actually reducing the bouncing. I think what is happening is, the rod where the damper goes up and down is super smooth. By raising it, you have introduced a rough section. I have done what you mentioned on old GE washer that the apron was sagging. The basket was rubbing on the bottom of the washer floor. I’m curious how that is working out.

Glad to see this. I had wondered about using some kind of clamp on some of these rods, especially the GE rods that have the spring completely covered. Do the GE rods have some sort of dampening grease in them when new? I have one that shows no sign of ever having foam on the rods. Not sure I have ever noticed this before on the machines I have worked on. I did come across a GE rod that I had split the plastic like piece that covers the spring. Evidently, it was back when I was about to investigate ways of fixing used rods. Btw, the GE rods (front) on one machine I have are blue and have a longer nipple where you put the clamps. Would it be advisable to double up on the clamps if there is enough room?

On the older style GE they use a vacuum type of damper. Pretty much if you wear it down, it could sag. I have a video somewhere that I used the collar to raise the drum. @mrlude4902 ай бұрын
The REAL solution is buy Nyogel 767A damping grease, apply on shaft where the collar slides up and down and it will significantly reduce the motion of the shocks. The option on this video can work but the plastic will wear out due to friction on the parts. Never use regular grease on the rods because that will make the shocks slide up and down even more easily. you need friction grease so the parts still move as they should but resistance of range is reduced! If you buy replacement shocks notice there is sticky stuff on the shaft where the motion will occur. Good luck out there.
@appliancerepairshorts2 ай бұрын
Come on now, that stuff works okay. The issue with it is, if you just apply the grease, it moves around and you lose most of the resistance. Samsung uses it in accordance with the pads that are actually making contact. That grease is messy. The collar is a solid repair. Been using them for a few years before sharing it. When you notice the washer starts to shake about 3-4 years. All you need to do is snug up the collar on the washer. Grease it good, but you can’t fine tune it. Definitely not a real solution. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts

i thought this was such a logic repair so i ordered a set of collars as soon as i saw your video only to find out when i opened up my machine that top caps on for the springs in my washer are different, there's no lip to on the caps for the collars to clamp down on so now i guess i'm going to have to figure some other way to dampen the rods, maybe i'll try the safety pin hack temporally.....
@appliancerepairshorts4 ай бұрын
I actually have a video on those. I was using the collars under the cap. Slip a piece of rubber on the rod. Now tighten the collar on the rubber. Lower the cap. You will have a slight gap, but it won’t hurt anything
@abruptlyblunt4 ай бұрын
@@appliancerepairshorts i thought about that the p;roblem is under the cap it won't keep the cap from going up and above tghe cap once it goes up it won't be pulled back down because it's not attached to the cap, i'm thinking about pounding the end of the rods round again so i can slide the caps and spring off them heating the plastic so i can compress it to make the hole small again then put it all back together flattening out the end again, just wished i could think of something quicker and easier for a temporary solution, thanks for the suggestion though....

@appliancerepairshorts6 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, the collars will not fit, actually they fit, but they will not fit back into the suspension rods hole. If you are able to install the collars on the washer, it will work. I did it once. It was difficult so I didn’t share the experience. You might need to go to ACE hardware store and match the screws up. The Samsung rods need longer screws for the collars to squeeze. I actually have the rod repair for Samsung. I’m releasing it shortly

Howdy I've got a Samsung WA85F7S6DRA/SA 8.5 kg washing machine. Do you know if collars would work and what size to use? I had an idea to try some hose clamps but where the tightening screw bulges out might cause issues. Doesn't really matter, machine is unusable in its current state.

@@appliancerepairshorts Found a different solution. Had some fly screen spline (rubber that holds fly screen in place) after replacing my fly screens. Is cheap to buy as well (got the idea from people that have used bungie straps). Used a half hitch to attach to bottom of each rod (this gives two pieces of cord, made them the same length) pulled nice and tight so won't slip off, put a collar above this to stop weight of drum filled with water pushing it off. May have been easier to secure to bottom of drum where rod goes or make some brackets out of metal or wood with holes on edges to easily tie to. Then wrapped eight times around rod, was able to secure at top by going up and around each rod and tying off with a further number of double half hitch knots (did four). Looped around again with a further four half hitches, until no cord is left over. So far, this solution has done around fifteen loads of washing without issue.
