I'm both diesel and gaz engine mechanic from Iran. I love my job and I plan to migrate to Canada to become a truck driver. In my opinion anyone who wants to drive heavy vehicles in harsh conditions like ice roads, logging, etc. should be at least a medicore mechanic first, then attempt driving. You can't beg bears and wolves to help you when you break down in the middle of nowhere. BTW great videos. Carry on and let us enjoy 👍💪

@@TATEXPRESSINC also: I just got my seal replaced precisely in that rear corner, yet after less than 1,000 miles that seal is leaking again. @@psuperpsychophreak if it's leaking after 1000 miles, the seal was not installed correctly. Probably damaged in the process by using wrong installation tool, cleaning hub or not torquing the spindle nut properly.

The wonders of technology ! My '97 Pete had the old style bearing system, without the spacer, and when the bearings wore a little the inner race of the inside bearing moved ever so slightly outward , allowing it to spin on the spindle. Eventually all four drive wheel spindles needed to be replaced, normally meaning new axle carriers. An other option, much less expensive, was to weld new spindles on and a specialist was available for this. The new system put that type of specialist out of business.My '07 Pete had the new stuff.

What's up, man! I hope you're doing well. First of all, thank you so much putting in the time to record this video and share your skills with us. I'm working on my Mack Master certification through my job. This last week our instructor walked us through replacing wheel seals and drum brakes. Our company bought an old Mack GU713 on auction for us to practice on before they rebuild it. Total beater, but a great truck for us to get our feet wet, especially since it's been through hell and back; every step of the way we learn from the challenges that come with working a well-"loved" truck, haha. Anyway, when I came home today I wanted to see another perspective on replacing the seals. I searched "replacing drive axle hub" on KZbin, and this was exactly what i was looking for. Man, you make it look so easy; I thought I was gonna throw my back out just trying to get the wheel back over the hub without a dolly. Thank you for all that you do and keep up the great work!! I look forward to checking out the rest of your channel. You just earned yourself a subscriber.

Finally a mechanic that knows not to lube the seal when installing it into the hub. So many morons on here using forms of lube. Says on the damn box not to. Also, no need to fill the hub be for you install the nut like that. On the hub as you can see in the video when you're rotating it there is a 8mm Allen nut you can remove to directly fill the hub. And also that torgue spec is 350-400 for that hub locking nut. I can gladly send you specs. But the shop you're in looks good enough to have that resource. Also enjoyed not seeing you get that last inch of when you're trying to line the shaft up in the diff lol. Video edit. Good luck and happy wrenching.

Wire brush to the tone ring do not use sand paper or use a buffer, clean the ABS sensor and than push it foreward so it's flush with the tone ring before reinstalling the tone ring or hub ( hubs have tone rings built in or replaceable depending on the hub ) clean the ABS Sensor after pushing it forwards, any prybar will do, if seized replace sensor or free it up and check for functionality than remove and clean, than reinstall with grease ) also clean the bearings and re-oil them before reinstalling don't just wrap them up even if they are somewhat newer or new.. contamination happens. Also clean the hub pilots up with a rust needler (Best outcome) or a wire brush or even sand paper to get corrosion away and use copper never seize to the spots the drum will seat after the tires have been torqued down, so many mistakes that can cause you hours in later hours of service in this video, i know its a demonstation but be realistic.

And for some reason he got his creeper out and was under the truck when he kicked over the axle causing it to fall across his shins. He was limping around the shop for like 2 months. Same guy when throwing drums away in the scrap bin gets his finger caught which causes him to do a 360 flip and land on the gravel parking lot. I helped him find his glasses and didn't give him too much of a hard time but when he went back in the shop the boss said why are you covered in gravel? and I lost it!🤣

@cbmech25633 жыл бұрын
@@sonofmontezuma3732 you still have to stop the oil from getting from the axle tube into the hub, which will require a second seal. Any hub seal that will work for oil will work on grease. Back in the 80s I converted a number of axles from grease to oil. The main difference between oil and older grease seals is that the newer oil seals are better designed and use better materials.

This is a great video on everything not to do when replacing this type of seal. Beating on the critical structure of the drum with a sledgehammer to break it loose, using a “grinder” on the seal bore. The whole procedure installing the new seal was wrong and damaging to the part of the seal that does the actual sealing.

So tell us how you would do it then? As a technician who does this work for a living this is how trucks are repaired, with hammers and brute force in many situations. The video left out details but otherwise I do not see an issue with how this work was done and it is done like this across the industry.
@chrishull92023 жыл бұрын
Ok... For those of you that don't know... You don't beat on a brake drum anywhere except the flange unless it's destined for the scrap pile. All it takes is one good whack to break it loose. But if you can't land a hammer where you intend to and are afraid of trashing some threads on a stud then go ahead and beat on it like this guy does so it will crack later and possibly become a projectile not to mention how much it sucks to be operating a truck when a drum cracks, not to mention the repair that goes with it. Even if your aim is bad, a stud is cheaper and easier to replace than a drum when it cracks while in service. I think the grinder on the seal bore speaks for itself, especially on an aluminum hub. Ever seen the OD of a seal spin in a hub? And last but not least, this particular seal requires a special installation tool (not the round plate he's using) to avoid putting pressure or "brute" force on the portion of the seal that does the actual sealing. Bending or deforming this part of the seal will cause it to leak and or shorten it's lifespan. I'm not gonna lie I've done plenty of these repairs half ass just like the guy in the video until it was my dime and I learned the right way. This video is more of a "how to" if you're in a jam and don't have the necessary skills or tools but need to get it done right now kind of video.
@gailgrove3 жыл бұрын
@@chrishull9202 That's great in theory about brake drums, in the real world they get beat off with a sledge hammer by the millions. Then they are inspected thoroughly before being reinstalled. If you live somewhere where road salt isn't used then I can see a less violent method used. There aren't massive numbers of brake drum failures, even after being hit with a hammer. He is using a proper seal installation tool, although they usually have a handle to strike and a guide. Finally on the "grinder", that may be a die grinder, but it is a paper "flap" wheel installed on it that won't damage steel.
