Do not put silicone sealer on the rubber part of the seal it will stick to tge rubber and steel then when you move the truck it will ball up and cause a leak. Unless it is a silicone type lube?

For a do it yourself mechanic, I gotta say you gave all the right advice on doing it, only thing you have to add is that fact with that spacer in between the bearings it needs to be torqued to a special torque so it will set the proper bearing lash or free place of .001-.005. Usually need to be torqued to around 300 foot pounds or so. But all in all the bearings would last just fine if someone were to follow the directions. The freightliner books calls for everything as you said it except for the torque as I had mentioned.
@elbatelles7964 жыл бұрын
For the torque is no problem, but if you want to torque it,it goes a 45 psi
@johnw45904 жыл бұрын
Good video. But that is a conmet hub. Your wheel will fall off if you don't torque that hub nut to 300 ft.lb. Don't ever never back it off! That spacer is there to set the preload on the bearings.
@thereviewer41734 жыл бұрын
@@johnw4590 The Freightliner manual says 250 ft lbs for PreSet type bearings using an Axilok nut (like in the video). Mine is also a ConMet hub and has not fallen off or leaked. The manual gives different instructions based on the type of nut. I’m seeing 4 different types of nuts.

It's always a good idea to replace the bearing every time. It's a While It's Out kind of thing. A bearing costs about $90. A service truck costs $300 minimum. Also, to clean the gaskets from the hub, use an air rotary tool with a red pad. Much better than sandpaper. And you should also repaint the hub once assembled.

Very informative video! The only thing I don’t agree with is the use of Gasoline to clean with! As you know Gasoline ⛽️ is an explosive 💥 motor fuel and one spark and ⚡️🔥 🚒 🚑 There are other safe alternatives to use that are available such as a parts cleaner or brake cleaner in a spray can! - I agree with the Silicone use as added insurance to prevent a leak. Avoid ⛽️ Gasoline at all costs! Thanks for taking the time to make and post this video!

Using silicone instead of the gasket is not recommended! The gasket is to seal the axle, but to also creat a buffer between the two dissimilar metals. Dissimilar metals will cause rust if they touch.
