This is a good video and I would like to add a tip for 540i - M62 owners. I just did this job today on my 01 540 except I needed a torx 50 to move the tensioner and get belt off. Everything else is right on.

540i owners: careful! on our cars the AC belt overlaps to the inside, not the outside like as shown in this video

Nice video however it would be great if you would refer to the Parts by their proper names also explain to the viewer if you are using a t50 torx bit or a 3/8 or half-inch socket turning it clockwise to release the tension on the belt so you can remove it. Just a thought .

My bolt broke in half! what should I do?
@grahamscales4447 жыл бұрын
The top pulley is called the deflection idler pulley. The bottom is called the tensioner pulley.. definately not the water pump pulley

Adjusting pulley on pelican parts. There's one on the ac belt also.

Ok well I was driving home and out of no where the temp needle went crazy. The car overheated. Even as I moved it never stopped overheating. My 528 started smoking on the right side of the radiator. It seemed like the lower right side. Funny thing is the fan was not operating at full speed plus two blades are broke so it's wobble. What I notice was the coolant was not that hot or under pressure even though the car was overheating. I wondering if it's the pulleys and belts and water pump failing and not the radiator at all. The sqeaks were loud when I bought the car and now it's overheating. Could it be the water pump and not the radiator?
@BeamerFanaticsE39E909 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you blew out a radiator

+Repair Fanatic I've changed the pulley alternator and belts and can't get rid of the squeaking is way worse after replacing the pulley will not stop. ..it's louder when I put tension on the motor (pressing the gas) not so much when idling....im so lost and wtf is the carter pin for that comes with the pulley set up I got the pulley bracket and other wheel. . (both round things you showed plus the bracket) thought it was easier per say the only the I didn't change was the hydrolic arm that supports the bracket but from the looks is all nice and snug and from the sound of it is snug as well

+Holly McCurry spray WD-40 on each pulley wheel. one at a time until the noise goes away then you'll find out which one is the bed pulley.
@phillemery86397 жыл бұрын
Why would you use WD40? the belt will end up slipping lol, just use a bit of water in a spray bottle
@michaelopere5424 Жыл бұрын
The squeaking could be a sign of a faulty power-steering pump bearing.
@jujagthemag9 жыл бұрын
How do you know when the idler pulley is bad? My belts are making squeaking noise now.
@BeamerFanaticsE39E909 жыл бұрын
When they start squeaking as yours are. When the bearings are loose and start to move.

iam having a hard time removeing the clutch fan/water pump my tool dont line up right with the screws can u recommend a tool and trick i have e39 and my tools from amazon
@WebbstR3 жыл бұрын
The bolts are placed in a rectangular shape and not square, try rotating the water pump 90° and then using the tool by grabbing "new" bolt heads with the tool. I know this comment is 3 months old but sharing information is important

the pully i bought online does not match up. The tensioner had this raised lip, where the pulley sits (the original factory one). and because of this little lip the after market one (the one shown in the video) sits forward about half an inch.
@BeamerFanaticsE39E908 жыл бұрын
Verify if it's for your engine. So models are slightly different
@alsdjfknbo8 жыл бұрын
Ok thanks, didn't even know that was an option. I'm just going to go and buy the whole assembly from autozone. Because I think its the original.

Is it true all pulleys have to spin freely ? I got a 03 bmw and the mechanic said one of them doesn’t spin, it’s the alternator one... he told me to spin it but my car doesn’t have the belt... so irk if it’s true or not ... a lil help
@BeamerFanaticsE39E904 жыл бұрын
yes it's
@oli29934 жыл бұрын
Repair Fanatic even if it doesn’t have the belt? Because it’s like almost touching the other pulley on the bottom i I thought maybe it’s because their like touching ... I ask because I don’t want to get ripped off... but I’ll take you’re word for it. Thanks man
@BeamerFanaticsE39E904 жыл бұрын
Oli you are good just replace the alternator and the belt.
