This is a quick and easy DIY project for anyone who owns a Riding Lawn mower. Eventually, at some point you will need to replace the blades on your mower, probably due to blade damage from hitting something you were unable to see in the grass. I will be replacing the blades on my Craftsman lawn mower but, this process is basically the same across other brands. The hardest part of this job will be getting the blade deck off the mower and back on. Unless, you have the ability to raise or jack your lawn mower up, then you won’t have to drop the blade deck at all. Replacement blades can be found at most big box hardware stores or online. Just make sure to check the blade's mounting point is the same style as the one you are replacing, and of course, blade size matters too.

Did an excellent job explaining installation of blades and belt. Thank you

Finally someone who shows the orientation of the blades. I watched one that had one blade on right and the other blade on wrong. There is a up or down on the blades. 50/50 chance of getting them both on correctly. I've seen several videos where they installed the blades upside down. I would love to see how the mower worked on their yard without the sharp side cutting the grass.

still "cuts" but it tears the grass blades, neighbor mowed his grass 2yrs with blades upside down, found out when he brought it for its first service from me.

The mashed down star on the one side was because someone change the blade and did not seat it properly when they tightened it down. I know because I was guilty of that. God bless.

That's nice but, if they are galded on and the nut won't budge? Yes we did PB Blaster let it soak etc. No go. And no, he never does maintenance on anything.

Some constructive criticism if I may offer. The rear clip isn't the smallest one such as you used. It should be the largest clip and it's installed thru the hole ahead of the keeper. The smaller clip goes at the spring end in this order, first a washer over the bolt than the spring arm followed by the small clip on top through the hole in the bolt. Aside from that your content was great and so was the voice clarity and video. Keep them coming.

Thanks. I had same problem... The bolts holding blades came a little loose so the blade wore the star down that holds it tight to the pulley.... But thanks for showing which side the cutting edge faces I forgot to notice before I pulled blades off!

Excellent overview. Much appreciate the quality and detail in your presentation. My LT1000 is going strong after 16 years. At least this year I have confidence that I have the bkades on the right way up. (They used to stamp grass side down on the blade - not anymore) Thanks again..

fyi at 5:38 it appears the bolt didnt completely tighten down on the blade. when you move it back and forth it looks as if the bolt and spindle assembly keeps moving when you stop shaking the blade. that second blade temporary fix is pretty scary

I can assure you it did tighten fully down and was fully secured. In fact I used the mower 2 days after and had no issue. However like I said in the video I do not recommend what I did and only did it because I really needed to mow and I have every intention of fully replacing the spindle assembly as soon as the parts come in. I will even make another video showing it being done as proof that I did fix the issue correctly and only did this as a temporary solution to allow me to mow for the time being. It was also a risk I was willing to take because I could guarantee the only person who could get hurt if something went wrong was myself.

I will be replacing the entire stack soon, I mowed once with my "fix" and everything was okay but went to mow a second time and there was quite a bit of vibration from the blade deck that was not normal.

Not a good illustration, you don’t mention if threads are right or left hand, you don’t correct names of parts / replacement parts ( spindle), very poor.

Just FYI, if you are watching this video, you have a little knowledge of what the parts are and can access other videos or the Craftsman Parts Site for the names and numbers of all parts.

Hi, if you have time make some corrections to your video. First, cover that different brands of riding mowers have different star patterns on their mower blades. Next you should of had a washer to go with every mounting pin used to mount the deck, The rear deck arms should be facing forward to aid with reinstallation of the deck. Also having some 2x4 pieces of wood on the ground under the deck prior to lowering, will aid both removal and reinstallation of the deck. Lastly, on some decks your viewers may have to loosen the pulleys on top of the deck to aid with installation of their new deck belt. You should add something about how to correctly remove and install the Power Take Off or (PTO) cable after they have lowered and released their deck. Best regards.

Could you be any more passive-aggressive. Why would he “make some corrections” to his video? If you’re that concerned and if you’ve got what it takes, make a video yourself.
