I disagree that using wick or a sucker is the best way to clear the old solder out of the holes in order to insert the new cap legs. Using the paper clip that solder won't stick to is the best way. I wish I would have watched your video before I replace the caps on the last few graphics boards. I had one hell of a time clearing the solder out with wick and/or suction. In fact this is the only reason I was reviewing many videos on replacing the caps to see if anyone had a better way. You do! I just did another one and carefully pushing through the paper clip when heating with an iron worked out great. THANKS for the tip!

When using solder wick, cover the solder with liquid or paste flux or dip the end of the wick into the flux, the solder will wick into it really well then.

desolder and Soldering are the easy parts, the clearing of remainiing solder in the holes are the PITA part. I am trying to recap the old P4 and Socket 370 motherboards from the early 2000s. I had tried Hakko wick, cheal sucker pump and the Engineer Solder Suction Device SS-03, add solder, add flux to the holes and wick, etc, none of them worked to remove the solder! The only way I can clear the holes, is to use some steel pick and heating the holes from the other side to poke thru. But because not all old solder are completely removed but jsut enough for the capacitor pin, soldering will not flow freely to fill up the holes. The capacitor still work as the bottom pads do make contact to the cap but I just wish I could clean old solder from the holes so I can get a better, cleanly solder job. "Learn Electronic Rep@!r" did show how he clear the hole cleanly with Chemtronics wick with Amtech Nc-559 flux and heat gun. That's what I'm going to try.

This video has been most helpful, I need to replace a bad cap on an old server motherboard, the cap has been leaking brown stuff. I have one question tho, how do you measure a bad capacitor? Sometimes the cap is not leaking or the top is not bulging, but I guess it can also be bulging on the sides? Thanks again for the tutorial! P.s. are you Polish?

I have been finding it very difficult to get the solder out of the motherboard holes. I don't have a fancy desolder station

Sorry for a late reply, I just practiced on a broken board and successfully got one out. I had the temp really high, probably too high at 450°C and I melted solder onto the connections which transferred heat way better. I also used a thick tip which held more heat so when I did get good contact it didn't dissipate into the capacitor it built up on the contact

Need more information, like test capacitors with a multimeter, is very important first ensure to all capacitors are good. Can you made a informative video related with the testing of capacitors from a motherboard using a multimeter?
@HetmanRecovery Жыл бұрын
Title: How to Test Capacitors on a Motherboard Using a Multimeter Introduction: Begin by introducing the importance of testing capacitors on a motherboard to ensure its proper functionality. Emphasize that a faulty capacitor can cause various issues, such as instability, power problems, and even complete failure. Materials Needed: Motherboard with potentially faulty capacitors Digital multimeter (DMM) Soldering iron (optional, for advanced troubleshooting) Safety equipment (gloves, goggles) Step 1: Safety Precautions: Always ensure the motherboard is disconnected from power and any other components before starting. Wear appropriate safety gear to protect yourself from electrical hazards. Step 2: Set Up the Multimeter: Set your multimeter to the capacitance (ΩF) measurement mode. Some multimeters might have a dedicated capacitor testing mode (often denoted by a capacitor symbol). Step 3: Identify Capacitors: Locate the capacitors on the motherboard. They are cylindrical components with two leads coming out of them. Look for any capacitors that appear visibly damaged, bulging, leaking, or have a burnt smell. Step 4: Test Procedure: Discharge Capacitor: If the motherboard was recently powered on, make sure to discharge the capacitors by touching both leads with the metal tips of a screwdriver. This ensures your safety during testing. Testing Individual Capacitors: a. Touch the multimeter's leads to the capacitor's leads. b. The multimeter will display the capacitance value, which should be close to the rated value of the capacitor. Small variations are acceptable. c. If the multimeter shows OL (Open Loop) or a very low capacitance value, the capacitor is likely faulty and needs replacement. Testing Electrolytic Capacitors: a. Electrolytic capacitors have polarity (positive and negative leads). b. Ensure you connect the multimeter's positive lead to the positive terminal of the capacitor and the negative lead to the negative terminal. c. The multimeter may display the capacitance value followed by a negative sign, indicating the capacitor's orientation. Step 5: Recording Results: Keep a record of the capacitors you've tested and their measured values. Focus on capacitors with values significantly deviating from their rated capacitance. Step 6: Replacing Faulty Capacitors (Advanced): If you identify faulty capacitors, you can replace them using soldering techniques. Make sure you have the necessary skills and equipment to perform soldering safely and effectively. Conclusion: Recap the importance of testing capacitors for ensuring motherboard functionality. Highlight that this process can help identify and address potential issues before they worsen. Remember, while testing capacitors can provide valuable information about the health of a motherboard, it's important to have a good understanding of electronics and safety precautions, especially if you're considering soldering and component replacement. If you're not comfortable with these steps, it might be best to seek professional assistance.

3 of my motherboard solid capacitor is a bit bent, should i replace it?🤔
@HetmanRecovery Жыл бұрын
If you have solid capacitors on your motherboard that are visibly bent, it's generally a cause for concern. Capacitors play a critical role in stabilizing and regulating electrical currents on the motherboard. When they become damaged or swollen, it can potentially lead to stability issues or even hardware failure. Here are some steps to consider: Visual Inspection: Carefully examine the bent capacitors to determine the extent of the damage. If the capacitors are only slightly bent and not visibly leaking or showing other signs of damage, it may be less critical. However, any degree of bending should be taken seriously. Check for Leaking: If the capacitors are leaking electrolyte or have visible signs of damage (e.g., cracks), they should be replaced immediately. Leaking capacitors are a clear sign of impending failure. Assess System Stability: If your computer is experiencing stability issues, crashes, or other anomalies, there's a higher chance that the damaged capacitors are causing the problem. Replace Damaged Capacitors: If you have the necessary skills and equipment, you can attempt to replace the damaged capacitors yourself. However, this requires soldering and electronics knowledge. Alternatively, you can take your motherboard to a professional technician or a computer repair shop to have the capacitors replaced. Consider the Age of the Motherboard: If your motherboard is relatively old, you might want to weigh the cost of replacing the capacitors against the cost of a new motherboard. Newer motherboards often come with improved features and may provide better long-term stability. In summary, while slight bending of capacitors might not be an immediate cause for panic, it's still a sign of potential issues, and it's a good idea to monitor your system for stability problems. If you see any signs of damage, such as leaking or other issues, it's best to replace the affected capacitors as soon as possible to avoid further problems. If the motherboard is old or if you're not comfortable with soldering, you may also want to consider the cost-effectiveness of replacing the motherboard altogether.

The legs don't melt. Only the solder around then melts. Use a bit of flux. It WILL melt. 500C is far too high.

This doesn't work on an xbox 360. The board is too thick. The wick and solder sucker doesn't work at all. The paper clip is even worse. Thanks for trying though
