How to: Replace C4 Corvette Fuel Pump

In this video I do some basic troubleshooting and replace a fuel pump on a 1990 C4 Corvette parts car.

I’m guessing you love but do not own a Corvette? First of all we’re talking about the C4 here, so how it’s built for the track is beyond me. My 16 year son owns a C4 and my wife’s Nissan Altima is way faster and handles much better than my sons car. We actually let him get the Corvette because it’s about the slowest car you can find. So let’s get the “built for the track” thing off the table. With regards to servicing, yes, the fuel pump is super easy on this car, after that everything is impossible. Take a week off of work if your heater core needs to be replaced. Don’t even think about replacing the spark plugs and if you have to replace fuel injectors…let’s put it this way, the GM engineers must’ve had a bad day when they designed the fuel rail location.

@@davidstepeck2644 i have 2 and yes they were built for the track. Corvettes have always been built with the track in mind. Mid engine, double wishbone suspension, leaf springs, etc.

@@davidstepeck2644 i would even argue about rpo code z07, z06, z51 but you dont know much about these cars so there's no point in telling you. But you must be corrected by saying that its not built for the track as the C4 Corvette was built for the track in mind. Look at the suspension, engine placement, aerodynamics of the vehicle, etc.

I just replaced my fuel pump and sending unit and it starts now! Thank you for the video. I was afraid it was something else. Your test light procedure gave me confidence that it was the actual pump.

Google search asked me this morning if I thought it did a good job of protecting my privacy. I said no. I just sat down to research how to replace the fuel pump on my C4 tomorrow and when I opened KZbin this was the first video it suggested (I didn't do a search - it was supposedly a random suggestion). Yes, Google knows way too much.

Yikes thats pretty crazy! Yes Google does know way too much. They probably knew you ordered a c4 fuel pump somehow. Well I hope you at least liked the video and the fuel pump replacement goes well for you. It's not that bad of a job all things considered. :)

It’s four screws, not even bolts, to get the fuel door off. How the previous owner managed to damage the fuel door so bad it’s beyond me. Two of the four screws are behind the gas door when you open it, so maybe they didn’t see those two screws and decided to rip the door off.

Would this cause intermittent stalling? Like randomly?

Anything is possible but probably not. Fuel pumps usually either work or they don't. I'd lean more to a bad fuel pressure regulator or just gummed up injectors if your thinking the issue is in the fuel system.

Great vid. Excuse my ignorance but I understand that when your set the key to the run position, you should hear the fuel pump prime? Well I don’t hear it anymore and of course my car will crank but won’t start. I have no fuel pressure with fuel gauge. I checked all the fuel pump fuses and they were good so I suspect the fuel pump relay but can’t access it since I have to push the car out of the garage to get to passenger side. So, if I had a bad relay, would your test light still light up? I’m just trying to work smarter not harder. Thanks!

When you turn the key to run the test light should light up momentarily. If it does, then its the pump and not a fuse or relay as any power there at all means the fuse and relay are good. Should also light while cranking. Hopefully that makes sense. Good luck!

Sir, thank you very much for this video. Your the only video I could find that showed the use of a test light. Other videos showed a multimeter but those aren’t dummy proof. I wired my test light just as you did and my wife saw the light coke on momentarily with the key to the run position and then came on while I attempted to crank it. I now know it’s the fuel pump and I’ll order one. This saved me a world of grief because I thought it was the relay and I was gonna push the car out of the garage because I had no room to pull it on the passenger knee bolster. Hopefully once I install a new fuel pump it will crank. I’ll let you know. Thank you so much for the help!

What year is it? OptiSpark is 92 and up on c4's I believe. If you're getting spark though it's not that.

Thank you for a great video and very informative 👍🏻 Amazing...! I have a 95 C4 with 95,000 miles and the engine makes a popping sound when the motor is in full Throttle... like it's not getting enough fuel... so I changed the original Fuel Filter and the Electric Fuel Pump and it still does it... the new electric fuel pump is a (Percision Fuel Pump Kit)....Any ideas?

That's an LT1 so I'd probably start by looking at the Optispark or maybe the O2's. Good luck! :)

My 86 vette didn’t get enough fuel anyway but I would be able to drive it perfectly fine. One day it just wouldn’t start for a long time. When it did start it wouldn’t accelerate fast at all. I was thinking it’s the fuel pump but I’m not completely sure. Do you have any ideas? I had it floored and it did 0-60 in like 30 seconds

Could be a fuel regulator. Back passenger side on the upper part of the TPI there is a vacuum line that goes to the regulator. Pull that line off and see if there is gas in it or if it smells like gas. If it does then you need a fuel regulator. I have a video on replacing the injectors and the regulator and I'm pretty sure I show it in that video.

Should the battery not be disconnected before replacing the fuel pump?

If you are just replacing the pump and not doing any troubleshooting at all then yes you probably should. :)

The Corvette has no business being near a race track. First of all we’re talking about the C4. Yes it should be the same although it might be a different pump so make sure you get one for a 92.
