Yeah my 2009 Subaru Legacy was a pain in the a$$. Of course I'm not a mechanic or anything but this really shouldn't require one. I hope they make them more accessible today because you shouldn't have to take so much apart to get to the cabin air filter.

oh it's difficult...I got it taken apart and replaced the filter...having trouble putting glove compartment door back on...will wait until tomorrow...why can't they just have a slot that is easily accessible?

FYI...there is no access panel in the early '05 Legacy or Outback glovebox. You must remove console trim pieces and the back of the glove box to get at the filter cage. Much more involved job than is shown here. The access panel came later...my '05 does not have the access panel and did not even have a filter in the filter cage (holder).

Man I knew mine wasn't right. Have an 08 outback, some previous owner removed the panel that was behind the glove box and replaced it with a slice of vacuum cleaner bag and a metal bracket. They must have thought the bag was filtering something?? Got the actual filter out and it was rotting and had a dead baby mouse (or mice, can't even tell) on top. Going to vacuum out and disinfect the area before replacing with a new filter

This does not match my 2006 Outback. I do not have the same lower access hole at all. After removing the glovebox and that upper compartment, there's three screws to remove a metal bracket, then a piece of black fabric/insulation that gets folded upwards, exposing the opening for the filter to be removed/reinstalled.

Why did they make it a lot more complicated for the newer model? The older Subaru model only had 3 super easy steps to change your cabin filter.

@@1AAuto thanks for replying. You make great videos. I bought a filter for my 8 outback from the dealer. It has no arrow. I see you placed it with the spines vertically. Mine fitted better into the grooves with spines horizontally. So just wondering if mine will cause any problems with the spines in horizontal position.

@@Nazimuddin-tv3wt These filters are sometimes designed a bit different from brand to brand. If there's no air flow arrow (or up arrow) the flat edge goes down to fit flush against the frame.

Agreed. 06 is different too. 3 screws facing up that hold a metal bracket that covers the area where the filter needs to slide out for mine. Had to remove that first.

@@MrOramato Not sure what you mean by "what Is the right way"? If there is an arrow on one edge of the filter it should always point down UNLESS it says "up" next to the arrow. Other than that it should be positioned whatever way fits best in the tray/frame.
