Just FYI everyone, I just did the removal portion of the job on my 98 Civic and a 1 1/4" crows foot wrench (which I happen to own) worked great to remove the inner tie rod. Buying a set of these wrenches would probably cost about the same as the special tool and give you a much more flexible set of tools in your tool arsenal. Thanks for the video AG.

You're absolutely right. A crow foot works very well, they are very strong, and usually have no issues. I have a set in steel because they are thinner than the regular chrome ones. But I had to grind one down at an angle on the inner side because it was too thick and didn't fit in between the tie rod space and the washer at the end. Other than that, I see no need for a special tool. However, the special tools are already thin and work very well too. The issue with them is they come in different diameters tubes and the smaller diameter one will not fit many vehicles. So I "suggest/recommend" the larger diameter one to accommodate a wider variety of vehicles if someone is doing a lot of front end work. Just my viewpoint.

When I change tie rods on my personal cars I just count how many turns it took to unscrew it when I put the new one on I screw it on the same amount of turn works like a charm.All my cars steer straight and dont chew up tires,

Finding unexpected part needs during a repair is all too common. I learned to treat these times as adventures instead of frustrations or setbacks! But I also learned to have a 2nd vehicle just in case too! It's no fun walking by foot to Autozone lol.

Did you detent the lock washer on the inner tie rod?
@JohnnieIsBored2 жыл бұрын
I also plan on doing this project and also read that you have to detent the lock washer as well. Would you happen to know what that actually looks like?
@darensky2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnnieIsBored it's a cupped washer that goes on the end of the inner tie rods that you need to detent on 4 sides to lock it in place. HTH👍

What happens if you dont put the little vent tube on??
@herranton6 ай бұрын
It's not a vent tube. It's called a zirc fitting. It allows you to hook up a grease gun to the ball joint so you can fill it with grease. If you don't do it the ball joint will wear prematurely and fail, probably very quickly. Running a ball joint without grease is like running your engine without oil. It needs it to work properly. Yes, I realize this is a two year old question. I hope that the op found their answer before this, but I figured I would answer just in case anyone else sees this and has the same question.

This is old but for anyone else that sees you need an alignment done but for the meantime to drive to get one you can adjust it yourself so they at least look straight but you still need to get a proper alignment on a alignment rack

@dirtydavesgarage82512 жыл бұрын
maybe i missed it but was there a reason you couldn't re-use those washers/lock plates that were on the original inside tie rods?
@AbnormalGarage2 жыл бұрын
There's 2 tabs on the lock washer that keep the tie rod from unthreading. When you remove the inner tie rod those tabs break off, and the lock washer is no longer usable. You can see at 6:16 in the video the broken tabs on the lock washer, and at 6:56 you can see what they're supposed to look like. Then at 7:41 you can see how it gets put in and keeps the inner tie rod from backing out.
