Somewhere in the list of comments someone said they could not get the driver side axle out. 1A Auto said that their video is for the passenger side and that the driver side is the same. That is not true. For the passenger side one pulls the axle out of the transmission first then out of the bearing. On the driver side you have to pull the axle out of the wheel bearing first then the transmission. That is because the shaft that goes into the transmission is three times longer on the driver side than the shaft that goes into the transmission on the passenger side. You won't think it will come out without taking the lower ball joint apart but it will. Here is how it works.. If you purchase both front axles you will see that the transmission side is different for the two axles, the passenger side has the spline inside the inner axle while the driver side has the spline on the outside like the bearing side. That means for the driver side you have to pull the axle out of the wheel bearing first and then cock the two joints to get the wheel side axle to bypass the knuckle. I fount it a PITA and found I had to keep adjusting the wheel turn until I found the right angle to get enough clearance. It took me and another person an hour to get it out even after I had the knuckle apart from the top ball joint. Then you pull the axle out of the trans. For some reason it went in a lot easier. Put it into the trans first then bend the axle boots as much as possible and there is just enough clearance to get it past the knuckle and into the wheel bearing.. On the passenger side the side of the axle that goes into the trans is shorter than the driver side and there you pull it out of the trans first. It coms out a damn lot easier than the driver side. Good luck.

One more comment. It took about 30 good hard blows with a full size sledge hammer to separate the upper ball joints. I thought they would never come apart but they did just like in the video, but my 3 pound short handle mini-sledge did not do the job. Get or use a full size sledge. I think a full size sledge is about 10 lbs.

I'm about to pull the driver side cv axle, it looks like there is a retaining ring on the end of that spline inside the differential, is that correct? If so, wouldn't you have to pull the diff cover off and pull the ring there? See diagram: (ring is labeled 3Z498) parts.ford.com/shop/en/us/transmission/powertrain-engine-parts/shaft-front-axle-7813407-1

Hey, I hope you see this, I just wanted to tell you thank you! You helped me out so much and I really appreciate it.
@Dyna782 жыл бұрын
The retaining ring is basically a circular spring that expands into a groove on the gear in the differential. The groove must have slightly angled sides, because when you pry on the axle to get it out, the ring "springs" and compresses enough to let the axle slide out.

I am trying to change out the hub s that I bought from 1A Auto. There is no tool that will get on the 15mm 3 bolts that hold in place because the CV shaft is in the way. That is what brought me here. I have been pounding on the part that is connected to the upper ball joint and it does not fall off like it did for you. Are there any other methods beside a bigger hammer to break it free?

Hi, great video. I do have one question though. I recently did a front bearing job on my 2005 V8 Mountaineer and the specs I found called for the hub nut to be torqued to 100 ft pounds. Can you please clarify? Thanks.

hello, doesn't the front diff fluid leak out when the axle is pulled? thanks!
@Dyna782 жыл бұрын
The axle is at roughly the same level as the fluid fill plug, so if the vehicle is level, no fluid should leak out. If the vehicle is tilted lower on the side you are working on, then some fluid could leak out, but not much.

I'm working on a 2004 ford explorer eddie buaer and I bought a 30mm socket for the exel nut but it's to big I'm thinking either a 28,29mm?
@kubotaman857 жыл бұрын
30 MM should work. You have to be sure you buy the 30 MM axle nut socket at the parts store
@maxxmatlock2127 жыл бұрын
James Richardson it's a 29mm. It's more of a snug fit than 30. I just changed both front hubs
@shannoncoffey42983 жыл бұрын
@@maxxmatlock212 Could not get a 29mm to go onto the nut, but I will admit the 30 mm was rather loose.
@Dyna782 жыл бұрын
I purchased new spindle nuts to use on this job, which have a 30mm hex. The original spindle nut hex measured 29.4mm and was very loose with a 30mm socket, but it worked. The new axle I installed came with a nut (luckily!) and the thread size was larger, too big for the nuts I purcuased. The nut that came with the axle needed a 32mm socket. And for comparison, when I changed hubs on my 2000 explorer, those nuts were 28mm! So I'd say the best way to know is to measure what you have/try some different sockets to be sure, as it seems that there may be no standard size, or it was changed frequently.

I found that the 'snap ring' on the new axle was spread out a bit more, with sharp edges. I removed the ring and used a file to slightly bevel the outer edge of the ring on the side that will be going into the gear inside the differential. Then I slightly compressed the ring to make sure it hadn't spread out too much, then put the ring back on the axle with the slightly beveled side towards the differential. This seemed to help the ring compress a little easier and I was able to get the axle to go all the way in and let the ring seat in the gear.
