IT'S GONNA TAKE A WHILE. Don't let the length of this video fool you. Just replaced the upper and lower ball joints on a 2004 MM and it took me two days with the help of an older "Ford" loving family member. I'm not a mechanic but I can follow instructions very well. And even with all the shop tools at hand, had to use a blow torch to get all the old ball joints out. Then the post on one of the lower b.j. seemed to have gotten seized inside knuckle. Once we separated the ball joint from from the lower control arm, the ball joint post had to be overly heated and then pounded out with a sledge hammer from the knuckle. The ball joint compression device that I had available to me didn't have long enough rings so I had to cut a piece of pipe for it to fit over the length. 25 years of doing IT work does not help any with the physical requirements for this type of job.

Nice thread jack you placed under the steering knuckle to manually raise it. Can you tell me where you purchased this form? Or what brand and or model is this? What are these jacks called?

Thank you for the video. However when I was doing it, I did notice that the sway bar link does not have to come off in order to do it. Once the axle, ball joints, and tie rod is free, you can get the knuckle out.

Excellent video! May want to add cotter pins to the tool list, as they rarely are good enough to be saved at the point (age/miles) a ball joint is worn out. Sucks to be 'almost' finished and have to run to parts store for something so minor. Of course a good shop has a cotter pin assortment : ) Also, if you don't have the special ball joint tool, a good 2 jaw puller will work for removal (jaws on lower control arm, screw pushes ball joint out), and reinstall using a large socket over lower 'ball' part, a 1" extension in the socket and the puller now upside down with the screw pushing up on the extension. If you clean the spline in the control arm with a small wire brush and use PB Blaster type lubricant it will go back in much easier.

Great video. Complete instructions including torque values..just what I needed. Doing the upper cntrol arms and lower ball joints on my 03 Explorer tomorrow. Happy to see I can leave the caliper, mount and rotor on and save some time.

Thank you so much for this video! I think you did a mistake on reassembly though, I think the reassembly/torquing of nuts is supposed to follow this order: Lower ball joint, upper ball joint, tie rod, otherwise a steering binding can occur according to the ford forum.

Job can be done without sway bar link & tie rod disconnection. You'll cry a little on reassembly, but it'll go. Just did them yesterday. Why break a link or damage a good tie rod boot? No need to.

GS Allen those links were destroyed, and on the verge of failing. They cost under 20.00 bucks! Replace em!
