You might want to mention up front that there at least two different types of drum brake mechanisms for the 07 - 13 Silverados. One does NOT utilize the large blue spring clip and brake pad does NOT come with the parking brake mechanism attached to the brake shoe . . .

Removing the respective Park Brake Cable from the Park Brake Equalizer was a great tip for reinstalling the cable through the shoe spring. Also, if I had it to do over, I would re-use the original spring set instead of buying a Dorman replacement set. The OE version seemed higher quality and was still in good shape.

Thanks for the video. The big spring is a real pain. I found it easier to remove the worn shoe opposite the parking brake while leaving the big spring on the one with the brake cable, then replace the shoe. Next remove the parking brake shoe and replace it. Doing it like this helps hold the spring in place and made it much easier for me to use the needle nose vice grips I had.
@Sherman622 жыл бұрын
I'll have to try that next time. On the plus side, if you do want to disassemble the whole thing, I think you could do so in about 10 seconds once the drum is off. I've never seen brakes that come apart so easy. It's just a pain getting it all back together. One thing that helped is squishing the pistons in first thing. Obvious in hindsight.

This video is far and away the single best ever produced on how to complete this job on this equipment. Excellent production and camera angles where you can see exactly what is being done. Awesome and very helpful hints such as Loosening the parking brake linkage to easier thread the cable and bullet into the spring and arm. I struggled with this job greatly trying to use several other sub par videos as reference. Thankfully stumbled upon this video and it was a game changer. Job finished. I also like the tip at the end on better prefitting the brake drum. Great job guys! Thank you very much.

Your videos are always spot on, and sometimes they literally bring me back from the brink of insanity. The only thing I would suggest on this video is an update to the description. It says 07-13, it should include 06, maybe additional years as well. Your video for 99-06 has rear disk breaks. I'm working on an 06 right now with drums entirely identical to these. Luckily I knew to look at other years to find these drum brakes.

I have two Silverados. One is an 07 and the other is an 11. Both are NNBS. The 07 has this style drums but the 11 has a different type. It has the old type "nailhead" shoe retainers instead of the big horseshoe spring. Also on the 11, get the hardware kit because there is a clip on the parking brake arm that you'll need to mangle off of the old shoe and crimp a new clip on to attach the new shoe. It is very hard to reuse the original clip. Not sure if the change in brake systems was at a certain date or just according to availability.

You may want to tell people to use some brake cleaner to cleanup the drum and shoes before putting it all together. The last thing you want is grease to be between the drum and brake shoes. I've seen drums come with a light coat of oil to prevent surface rust.

If you are not sure of what brakes you have then the best bet is to remove the brake shoes and drum and take them to the auto parts store or measure them and that will tell you the correct size. Make sure you take pics as you are removing things and replace in reverse order.

Good tutorial, but I'd always recommend replacing the springs with new ones. Especially on the drums since on these trucks, the drums don't need to be changed that often (I think most people wouild get about 100-150k out of a set of drums brakes on these trucks because the fronts do most of the braking). It's just a few dollars more but you don't really have to worry about old springs breaking. Just my two cents. I'd rather spend the extra $50 for two new spring and hardware kits than have to go back in there in a year and replace the hardware again later).
