I'm glad my iPod can't sue me for malpractice, its in the trash now. The video was excellent, its just it all went to pot when I soldered the new ribbon cable to the main board. The solder tended to bridge between the tiny solder points, but would clear when swiping across them with the solder iron. Then when plugged into the computer it was recognized stating it needed updating but after that nothing happened. So I assumed a solder point was not made and tried to solder each point one at a time. It only got worse from there. So almost, I actually wish I had another one to try the repair again. What temp is you solder iron set at, mine was at 650f.

It sounds like the dock connector flex cable internal pins are bent or damaged. This does not mean the battery is good you should test while you have the device opened.

i have followed ur video, replaced port cause i was not getting a good connection to the computer and it would not boot or restore with out errors. now it gets to the point in the restore with the apple and status bar that doesnt move. i do not get any errors even when sat overnight. I do not have it totall put together. soldered flex cable but is not mounted into the ipod. just soldered. what point in the reassembly on the video would you try to restore. any info would be helpful

I just attempted this on a friends ipod...I did not remove the battery because it was completely dead. I soldered everything up and all solder points look good but the ipod will not power up. Well done video! I really liked the close up camera angle and enjoyed the tips you gave throughout. I am however in a little bit of a predicament though. After thinking the install was going smoothly, I went to power on the device after soldering the ribbon cable and there was nothing. Checked power and solder joints and both looked good. I ended up desoldering the dock cable and found that the bottom right connection point on the board itself was missing copper and had no solder in that little joint. Do you know what this point does or what would you recommend for me to do? I also could post a picture of the part I'm talking about if you are willing to help me out and think the picture would be useful. Also do you know if the dock connector has anything to do with the screen functioning properly? I'm sure it does I just don't know how. I really would appreciate any reply or help.

Yes provide a pic of the missing solder pad and I can assist you. You may have to run a jumper form the missing solder pad directly to the dock connector flex cable.

When I connected the Ipod to the DC power supply it was not charging anything because the battery was removed. The DC power supply provides current to the logic board so I may power it on while the battery is removed.

Chris Meilleur My soldering iron does not utilize a set temperature, it uses a "Smart Heat" technology that can be explained via Metcal website. Setting your solder iron to 650F should be fine, yes we use both Chip Quik Alloy and Zeph low melt desolder wire.

In this video I use a Metcal solder station that does not require me to set the temp however if you're soldering iron does require you to set a temp 700-750 F should be good. How do you know the battery or the charging port is the issue?

I use a voltage reader, which I connect between the Ipod and the charging cable. If the device is not pulling voltage from the charger than it is possible the dock connector flex cable(Could be other components) is bad. I disassemble the device to test the battery with a multimeter, if the battery is less than 3.7V when charged or 0V when dead the battery is bad. There are many test to perform when diagnosing the Ipod I recommend you use a multimeter and voltage reader to diagnose the issues you are inquiring about.

Awesome vid! Would not have attempted this fix without it. Altho charge port now works, battery dies within a few hours of full charge after replacing dock connector. Current draw seems to be coming from components under copper foil, attached to home button. They are hot to the touch constantly. Everything else works good. Not sure were I messed up... O.o

I would go back and check the dock connector flex cable and make sure there is no bridging of the circuits where you attached the flex cable on the Ipod logic board. It is also possible the replacement cable is bad, does the home button work and the headphone jack?

Ok, let me explain you : the soldure (dunno how to write it well) in industrials circuits as computers or smartphones here, are mostly lead free. So it's like tin only. What he is doing here is adding leaded soldure to be able to melt easier the industrial soldure. Because industrial soldure melts at a higher temperature. Then, he uses flux in the syringue to decape the surface, so the impurities, such as dust or rust, to put them out. It kind of clean the surface. Actually, in the soldure you can buy in shops, there is often flux in the center of the wire, but for small soldiers you can use some, it's not obligatory. I'm not completely sure of what I said, but i read much about these and I often weld. By the way, I've never tried using flux because it's more for professionals. Sorry if my English is bad :p

Hello, You will need to run a jumper(Copper wire) from the damaged solder pads to the connection/probe points shown in the second link below to reconnect to the circuit with the new dock connector flex cable. Out Source Repairs I had a question about an iPod 5th gen I have that cannot charge due to a corroded charging port/end of flex cable. I wanted to know if you guys were able to fix that as well as replace the battery in it since it has been inactive for about 2 years now.
