Just did this exact axle today. You do not need to remove the strut. All you have to do is undo the upper ball joint, push the control up to give you enough clearance to remove the axle. The reverse the procedure. It took me 20 minutes...

i just did my passenger side axle. i removed the strut but not the tie rod link. had no issues. i have never done this before and it took me two hours with hand tools and jack stands (and i'm older than i used to be). i expect the driver side to take me less time now that im familiar with the process. thank you!

8-22-16. I replaced both axles this weekend, and I did not find a way to get the axles out without removing the struts. Loosing the upper ball joint helped too. Just go ahead and do all of this vs trying to as little as possible and save the frustration.

I just replaced the Rh axle on my 2008 Silverado. You DO have to remove the strut to get the axle out. I wondered why while watching this video, and it will not come out with the strut in place. And if you have a Rough Country leveling kit installed, be prepared for a little more work than the video shows. All I did was remove the bolts and knock the block out. When reinstalling, I kept the strut nuts just slightly loose. Used a pry bar to hold down on the on the a arms. Tapped the block into place to slide on bottom strut bolt in then used a large crescent wrench to twist the strut to get the other bolt to line up.

You can't get the shaft out unless you pull the strut.

Yes it is necessary to remove the strut. I tried without removing and could not get the CV axle out with the strut mounted. It does not need to be completely removed, but does need the top nuts and lower bolts taken out so strut can be moved out of the way. This is a very simple project, but I highly recommend an air impact wrench to help speed up the process.

Can be done with strut in. All you gotta do is pop the upper ball joint and swing the hub assembly down and it can snake out above the sway bar and then down through the LCA and out it goes. Just did it

Great video guys. Your GM / Chev videos have been very helpful! In regards to the removal of the strut while replacing the CV; is it 100% necessary to complete the CV swap? I am about to replace ,y front CV's on my 08 Avalanche LTZ 5.3. (Same setup, mechanically speaking) Is the reasoning for the removal because the lower end of the strut interferes with the CV, most importantly the area around the boot? I am assuming there the potential for damage during reinstall anion. Contrary to your video on the older gen. Chev,. (Obviously different models are designed differently). If it's possible can you explain to "us" the reasons / justifications for this step. Thank you for the incorporated strut replacement in this video and appreciate the added bonus. I have to replace the cv joint on my 2008 Escalade. As I'm sure you know, they are all-time four wheel drive (no 2wd option). When removing the 6 bolts holding it onto the differential, will the cv joint/axle spin if the other 3 wheels are on the ground (using a floor jack/stand on the side I'm working on)? Don't want to get that far into the job only to find out it wont spin to get me access to the remaining bolts. By the way, I have used multiple videos of yours to repair my vehicles. You guys are awesome!

Actually possible to change CV without removing strut. You gotta pop the upper Ball joint and let the hub swing down. Can snake axle up over the sway bar and then out and down behind the strut. Just did it on a 2011. When I had my 08 I removed the strut and that was a pita due to a leveling kit from the previous owner. Quicker and easier to pop the upper ball joint. There's a another video on KZbin about it. Just trying to help save some time for you guys. A1 auto has helped me a lot with multiple vehicles, but the strut removal seems silly to me, maybe they go off of GMs recommendation?

You can not do this with the strut in place. I just did this job on my 2008 Escalade EXT on both sides. Trick is to loosen all three strut nuts on the mount under the hood. Back the nuts off so just a few threads are holding them. Then remove the bolts that attach the strut to the bottom A arm. Now you will have the ability to shift the strut back and allow it to drop in the A arm giving you plenty of space to get the axle out. No worries on the load on the strut. It will not spring out. Very easy to put it back in place. I did the driver side first and it took me 3 hours just because I was trying to avoid messing with the strut. The passenger side took me less than an hour.

I replaced the driver side cv axle and strut like in the video using 1A auto axle and Monroe Quick strut. Now the vehicle clunks. I think it is the sway bar link but I can't get it any tighter than it already is. It's an 08 Tahoe and the front end has never been apart before. Any ideas?

On this application the cv axle has a plate that bolts onto the plate that is on the front differential. It is not a transmission. I wound up replacing the factory sway bar links with new ones from Moog and I feel that has solved the issue. The factory ones are hard plastic and never seem to reseat as they should when you put them back together.

No. You'll just take the chance of wrecking the hub bearing. 4 Low/high is all in the transfer case.

You must remove the strut because if you don't the spindle will not have any give, thus not allowing the CV axle to slide out.

It doesn’t apply to a 2011 sierra. The bolts for the bottom bracket for strut are directed from tom. So no chance to get them out before removing axle. Just undo top bolt joint and the steering rod. Easy, took me only one hour.
