I used a 10 mm long socket in 3/8. I used Ac Delco also. I used copper anti seize from a spray can. The drivers side is much easier. If you are putting it off doing it, do the driver's side. It started up better after 2 glow plugs. The air box doesn't need to come off or the battery disconnected but the wheel should come off for doing the passenger side. I still haven't done the back plug on the passenger side. Mine is a 1995 and the access after removing the fender cover is smaller. It looks do-able from underneath but I'm not 'risking' it yet. I did the 3rd plug back without removing turbo or exhaust, use a 3/8 long extension. Take off the 2 wire separators (from exhaust) for easier access, it's a nightmare getting the wires on again, I used long nosetip pliers as the white plastic tips broke off. Some of the plugs were almost loose so barely snug them up, torquing is probably not needed. Surprisingly, the engine runs better and sounds better with the new glow plugs.

My truck is much better after doing the plugs too haha. My truck would not start unless I used the block heater before I replaced them.

You can plug a rubber line on the end of the glow plug and use it to start it in the back holes.

That's a great tip man! I wish I knew that when I was doing the install!

Wedge something between the block and down pipe to hold it out of the way for you. If necessary, just grab a piece of 1x2, or a shim or something to hold it out of your way (cut it to length as needed). The “third hand” is priceless in many situations.

Thanks for the tip man! Yeah, dealing with that down pipe was "fun" haha.

I am standing in front of same process, driver side was done as well as looking onto flywheel side the 2 rear plugs on passenger side, so the last 2 front plugs on passenger side are challenging but I learnt to only loose the exhaust pipe topside to rescue the gasket on lower end and to remove the inner fender, the last I will double check if not also possible to only remove the cooling water expansion tank to have access to the 1st plug from top end on passenger side, however thank you from Marienheide/Germany, very helpfull ejp

So about how long did it take to swap out the glow plugs? [ hours] ???
@lonestarspicyboys41643 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say cause I did it over 2 days, but I think I did it in about 5 hours give or take some.

Just finished replacing them in my K2500 last night, and now I need to reassemble the down pipe and wheel well. Getting the down pipe off is a bitch, but miraculously, I didn't break any of the studs in the process (considering how rusted the nuts were).

Always a good day when you don't break studs man.

On the passenger side remove the heat shield around the glow plug my
@lonestarspicyboys41647 ай бұрын
I don't think I had to do that when I did mine.
@eedom69 Жыл бұрын
How do you remove the connector? Does that just slide off?
@lonestarspicyboys4164 Жыл бұрын
I did this repair a long time ago, but I remember them just sliding off. I think I had to use pliers on some of them.
@mtebaldi13 жыл бұрын
did you use any anti seize on the threads of the new glow plugs?
@lonestarspicyboys41643 жыл бұрын
I did not, but It might be a good idea. I would just do some research first to double check though.
@stevetaylor89162 жыл бұрын
No need to mess with the down pipe. Just use a 5" extension and a swivel joint.
@lonestarspicyboys41642 жыл бұрын
I wish I would have know that haha. The down pipe wasn't fun to deal with.

Hey mate what part number for the Plugs? I have a 24V 6.5 Detroit and can’t find the right ones I’m in australia too makes it quite difficult being an American model
I'm sorry, I didn't use the part number to get mine, I just used a local parts store where they looked them up using the make and model of my truck. If you call a chevy dealership and provide them with your vin they should be able to get you a number. It's cool to hear from someone in Australia!

24 volt ? Is that accurate?

Me: Watches you struggle with the down pipe. *Laughs in 6.2 non turbo diesel* 😂😭

I bet not having a turbo sure makes working on things easier haha
