Passenger headlight retainer/holder was busted....went ahead and bought a new pair from these guys for about 200. They shipped in 3 days and I followed this video to change out both my headlights in about 2 hours. Awesome video and good deal on the parts. Thanks @1A Auto Parts

Great video! FYI this was exactly the same procedure on my 2013 Prius. The dealer wanted $370 for an OEM headlight and over $400 for labor to install it! Found one on Amazon for $119 and did it myself. Thanks!

One more thing to consider. If you get moisture inside the headlights, check underneath that the black plastic shields in the fender wells are intact and any other plastic under there that may be loose/damaged/missing and fix that first. These plastic shrouds prevent water from splashing onto the backside of the lights.

Thank you! I was able to do this in 1.5 hours and I didn't have to take whole bumper off because I was replacing just the passenger side headlight. I took off the recommended screws/clips. But forgot the middle one..lol, However, I realized the right side of the bumper could be pulled back, which allowed me to access the headlight fine. It was a bit tricky to get it back in, but it worked out. I also agree, these bulbs on the passenger side are very difficult to change, which is the reason why I had to replace the headlight. I has installed the bulb in wrong and it melted the plastic housing around it. Again, Thanks!

My God. All i wanted to do was remove the headlights so i could undercoat the car properly, as i have done with other cars. Her car (girlfriends car),is a few weeks old so i did that part of the job with my extension wands. This is a lot of work. I'll wait till spring when the car is a few months older to do this..you can see from this video,all the surfaces to be coated.. (i've checked on my neighbors new Corolla what the dealer did and they don't do these inner areas) why i do my own. Takes me a day to do it all. I purchased a universal plastic clip kit on ebay for under $20 with like 450 various clips in it. I'd suggest you always have this kit on hand when working with plastic clips because they are easy to break.

Tips yes, these helped me 1. The clips, pry the center out before trying to pop them off if you don’t have a tool. Trust me it’ll save you time lol 2. When popping off the front fender from the side work your way in from the wheel well don’t force it too much 3. If you touch the bulbs wipe them off with a rag when putting them into the new housing. 4. Do one headlight housing at a time. If you can, have someone hold the fender and don’t take it completely off, fenders can be a huge pain in the ass putting them back in. All are tips when I did mine, my neighbor worked at a shop so he helped/ told me all of the above that I told you. 5. Sorry this is out of order now haha, label everything so you don’t lose track of clips some are longer than others. I labeled and laid them out like an assembly so putting them back together was just in reverse order but whatever works for you Good luck man :) have fun!

Awesome video, literally had the headlight out in 10 minutes. Found out the light bulb had melted the plastic holder and that is why I could not get the bulb in correctly. You then have to buy a new headlight.

Great video. Your efficiency, clarity and thoroughness should be emulated by more youtubers. You might change the title to "Headlight Assembly" so that it comes up in searches and you don't get all the bulb replacement traffic. Would love to see a video of installing after market fog lights & wiring kit on Generation 3 prius.

I was able to remove the headlights without having to remove all the bottom bolts I only removed the two bolts under the wheel well and the three bolts that hold the light fixture on to the frame and it was rather easy thanks for the video it helped me a great deal

Hi, thanks for the video. It's very useful. I have questions. 1)Before taking the motor out, should we keep the light alignment to purticular point? I.e. 0 to 4 2) after fitment at which alignment point we should keep it, before doing beam alignment. I.e.0 to 4. 3) for my case, one side light is giving upper up and other is way down. How can I fix it? It's has a motor and manual adjustment.

I have a different brand car, than shown in the video...anyway I took the car to my dealer for bulb/headlight replacement and upon picking up the car, I noticed gaps between headlight assembly and fender in 3 different spots. It seems that after replacing the headlight, techs just bolted headlight in without even re-adjusting it so it would sit properly with the fender and have even gaps all around. I talked to their head manager and he asked techs to work on this and correct the issue. I explicitly asked them to match the passenger side as it was never touched previously by their techs. What do you think...I took the car back and saw that they made it much worse than it was! The tech decided to adjust the fender so it would close the gap between itself and headlight. Now, the top of the headlight doesn't have any gaps(it should have a bit) between the fender and to fill the gap, they used a single sided foam tape! Pushed the fender towards the hood so much, that it went 4 mm lower than the hood and now pretty much rubbing it. I asked them what on earth were you doing and made this thing even worse?! The regional manager wanted to ask the guys to correct the issue, but I stopped him as my car would be third the victim of their techs! I was so upset + I paid for the headlight replacement and at the end I would have to fix it myself. :(

So there is no separate ballast for a 2011 Prius? I just ordered a ballast for a 2011 from a company that said it fits but I just pulled out the light and there’s no place for the ballast.

I having a hard time replacing my 04 prius headlight housing on the passenger housing. The entire housing is damage. I bought the new housing for it but now the ballast is giving problem. There is no hole for the ballast wires to go through it. I wonder what would you do with it. Thanks

I don't know much about cars, but I had to replace the battery in my Prius vs my father's Equinox... Dear GM: Why did you make something as simple as a battery replacement so bloody difficult? Also... why do you use T15 Screws for the friggin' air filter when everyone else just uses clips!?

I wonder if it's possible to just bend the bumper cover open enough to slip a small socket in there and unscrew that one headlamp bolt without removing the entire cover... probably a bad idea to try...

Hey - I just tried, and it worked. Kinda.. It was actually no problem getting the bottom headlight bolt off. It took a lot of finesse to remove the lamp fixture while the bumper was still mostly in place, but after working it for a bit, I was able to get it out. And then it took ever more to get the new one in place - but again, it was possible after enough wiggling and jamming. In the end, I got the job done without doing any damage, and probably a bit quicker that it would have been to remove the whole thing. I probably wouldn't recommend it if your car is pristine, but for my old beater, I'm glad I did it. Thanks for the video - it was very helpful along the way.

A gread video from 1A Auto as usual, but far too much to go thru for a bulb change! Toyota should do better with design really. However, you may want to try the following procedure before taking off the front bumper: - First, fit the bulb on the easier side first. Get to know the angle the bulb goes in and twist it to secure with a nice and sweet click; - The other side works with the SAME ANGLE. Repeat the process for the other side with the harness disconnected (otherwise it's very hard to get the bulb properly in)! Then connect the harness and job done!

This is crazy. Just unscrew the end of the air intake hose and coolant hose. Remove old bulb from behind. It a little tight but if you put the bulb in first and then hook the bridle up afterward it's a 5 minute job. Bulb costs $18.00.
