I also like to see a clean engine. I detail mine regularly and have been doing so for 30+ years. I have never used a pressure washer. I don't like the idea of possibly forcing water where it shouldn't be going. (Like into an idler pulley bearing) My cleaning weapons of choice are plain old Gunk engine cleaner where there may be an accumulation of dirt and oil or just grease cutting dish soap mixed with water in a spray bottle and a long bristle paint brush and a parts cleaning brush to scrub into the crevasses. After a good brushing I gently rinse it all down. I do cover my alternator with a plastic grocery bag and foil. I don't worry about covering all the plug in connections that are already pretty waterproof since I'm not blasting with a lot of water pressure. Afterwards I dry it all with compressed air and a long reach blow nozzle. My choice for a new looking finish is Dura Gloss Wet look tire shine. Also spread around with the paint brush. It doesn't stay wet and sticky like most tire dressings.

With a pressure washer, it's a good idea to use a lower pressure tip and possibly stand back and keep moving. That solves the pressure issue. As he said, a regular hose is going to introduce way more water. Thats why I would prefer the pressure washer. But I've used both before.

I hardly ever even wash the exterior of any car I have, but I have vacuumed the leaves under the hood of my 3rd gen Prius. Seems like that might be a good thing to do before power washing, just to keep organic bits and sand from blowing other places and/or draining down to hidden spots

No need to foil anything in a newer engine. Connectors are made with seals to prevent water from entering. Just don't high pressure wash it directly at the connector. I've washed engines for more than 10 years and never had a problem.

The area around the spark plugs/coils can hold a lot of water and you don't want water getting into your spark plug wells which can cause misfires which will lead to other problems. The seam in the middle between the cowling pieces (just below the windshield) is a known issue on some models allowing water to drip into the spark plug area . Black urethane caulk that resists UV works well to seal the seam. Use an Armor-AlI type product on the connectors and other plastic or use a Silicone spray that states "for use on plastic", wherever you need to lubricate metal along side plastic or rubber. I use Liquid Wrench RV Silicone Spray. Peace.

Hi Greg, First, excellent video! I have a 2011 prius (3rd gen) and in your video, you had foiled area just above the ECM without WD40, but you mention also that you should WD40 everywhere that you use a foil. Should I WD40 that ECM area with all the wires? BTW, WD40 is liquid; it seems counter intuitive to spray electrical connections with that since we don't want even our water rinse hitting these area. Is the purpose of the WD40 to clean since you weren't able to do with with the Shine product? Many Thanks! --Tai

I would be a little leery of spraying WD-40 on the plastic electrical connectors. A friend of mine back 20 years ago found that spraying WD-40 on Anderson connectors (I believe they were the gray SB-50s) just caused them to fall apart. I wonder if there would be something better than WD-40.

Don't use all purpose it stains. Use Dawn mixed with warm water instead. Skip the wire brush on the wires no need. If possible use a regular hose instead of a high pressure washer. The "gurgling" you heard wasn't the "hybrid engine talking", it was the brake actuator pump refilling the reservoir. As long as you’re not blasting the bearing area with high pressure, there’s no need to cover it. Actually you should let your APC do most of the work and don’t use a brush this stiff. Agitate the really cruddy areas with something like a parts cleaning brush after letting the APC dwell then RINSE, don’t blast! You really don’t need to cover anything if done properly. It’s an engine bay designed to live with crud and a certain amount of water exposure.

When I was young, I used to clean my car every few days to keep it looking great for the ladies. Unfortunately, after a day or so, all the stuff I detailed just looked "good" and not "great" as I had originally achieved. Later, in my 30's ( and up ) I just sprayed off my car at the wash and drove away. All that work with Trim Shine is a waste, because after driving in the rain once, it will totally eliminate the "look" you got and revert to what you had just before you applied that bit. Unless you are showing the car, why bother?

Why wd 40 instead of say a silicone spray? Also which generation Prius do you think is built best? Any problem areas when shopping for a used one between 2007 and 2011?
@kevinbailey60647 жыл бұрын
WD-40 was originally designed for this type of application, displacing water in electrical components. WD stands for Water Displacement
@haleiwahi277 жыл бұрын
silicone spray is fine after the engine has been cleaned and WD40 used where it was needed as a water displacement tool. WD40 also collects dust and grime in the months to follow, where silicone spray does not.

I know your comment is 10 months old, but watch out for the 2010s. They have an excessive oil consumption issue (1qt per 500 miles). Other than that, solid vehicle :).
@paladain556 жыл бұрын
Id think they wouldve been fixed by now. Cars that consumed that much oil wouldve gone under the knife for warranty repairs a long time ago. I have a 2010 with 120k and it only consumes 1 quart every 10k miles.
