In this video we show you how to remove and install a high pressure pump on a Land Rover Freelander TD4 2 L diesel engine
It is a straightforward job you do need a couple of specialist tools which you can buy very inexpensively it's like everything just take your time take pictures make sure you have the engine locked and marked with tippex just in case and you cannot go wrong
An Injection Pump is the device that pumps diesel (as the fuel) into the cylinders of a diesel engine. Traditionally, the injection pump is driven indirectly from the crankshaft by gears, chains or a toothed belt (often the timing belt) that also drives the camshaft. It rotates at half crankshaft speed in a conventional four-stroke diesel engine. Its timing is such that the fuel is injected only very slightly before top dead centre of that cylinder's compression stroke. It is also common for the pump belt on gasoline engines to be driven directly from the camshaft. In some systems injection pressures can be as high as 220 bar (3190PSI).

Just done mine after watching your video. Brilliant thanks. Couple of points. You will need a second person to realign the engine mount. 2nd I had removed the special tool after removal and then promptly crapped myself when I came to put the new pump on and realised the pulley had moved across. Luckily the chain had not slipped! And all was well! Really helpful 👍🏼👍🏼

Nice vid Leon! I'm a Landrover Jaguar tech, These pumps have become quite a common failure on the BMW Td4 and Td6 motors. That tool is essential if you don't want a total stripdown to re-time the engine. Having said that, on this family of engines, the pump isn't timed, so it isn't essential to lock the crank, although obviously it's good practice. To be honest, sometimes the worst part is separating the rubber fuel hoses from the pump, they really grow on!!! Another tip is remove the MAP sensor from the inlet while it's removed, and give the port in the sensor a good clean (carefully) ,it's possible with the manifold in situ, but fiddly. You'd be surprised how many we see with the port blocked with that black goo...keep up the good work....cheers mate...

Thanks a lot mate yes I know the pump isn't timed with the timing chain I lock the engine so I can release the bolt easier and when you are putting the bolt back you can torque it a lot easier with the engine locked

Hi there mate,My low pressure fuel pump was noisey and buzzing so i replaced it with a pierberg pump at £150 but when i put the new pump in its noiseier than the old one,I noticed you are a tech engineer with these,Could you please tell me if anything else could be causing this racket,Thanks very much and take care .

Hi, great video, im almost there with getting mine out. Quick question. When you get the cover off to access the bolt you need to take out before putting the special tool in to release it, when trying to loosen this bolt off is it ok for the outer belt to move when trying to loosen? Im assuming the special tool locks the timing chain and not anything to do with the fan belt? Just want to double check before loosing it off as i can see it moving the belt backwards when doing so. Cheers

Hi, changed mine and everything was goning well. Thanks for your vid. The engine starts good, but unfortunately there is no reaction when the accelerator pedal is pressed. 4 error codes are displayed: air mass sensor, boost pressure sensor, pedal sensor and sensor power supply. I had disconnected the battery. Deleting errors doesn't help. what can that be?

Hi mate thanks a lot yes you are correct they are not timed in the centre you can put the pump in any rotation but the pump to the chain is timed and what I mean by that is is you have to make sure nothing news as you're putting it back on that's why you have to use the special tool

Looks like the intake ports are going glog from the EGR and pcv oil vapors. On my old 05, 2.2 DCI X-trail had black smoke under load, not much, but noticeable in the rear view mirror. Tried every trick, but smoke was still there. Later i had a head crack and when taking the head off, I noticed that the ports had like 1cm thick layer of carbon on. They where like 50% smaller. New secondhand tested(had carbon filled ports too) head and ports cleaned, valves resurfaced and the smoke was gone. Ok when I pull over a tonn trailer behind then there was some smoke. So worth checking the intake when she is a smoker and do not want to quit her bad habits.

Mr B Carbon build up is an enemy of every modern turbo car. Diesel have direct injection and now petrol engines too. Some have dual injecton to clean the valves. I have a theory. When I took the head off, inspected the valves and some intake valves where bent. Theory is that carbon build on the valve seal surface, or some piece gets loose from the intake manifold/port. When the valve closes and the carbon chunk is on one side only, that may cause valves to bend

Not this sort of extent it isn't, I can show you diesels of this era with over 200K that fine . It poor engineering and poor servicing that gets these to that sort of state. These bmw diesels are notorious for it, poor egr pcv and injectors mixed with long term running with fuel pressure issues common on these and you get these results of years of poor combustion/breathing excessive oil thus all the deposit build up .

Just got my pump swapped over by watching your video! Starter motor is a pig, especially as there is another bolt right next to the starter motor bolt at the top (15mm) and my hidden starter bolt was a 13mm :/ Main problem I'm having is that I can't now line up the engine mount properly - it's about 50mm out. Engine seems to have moved on the jack while I was swapping the pump out so having to try and pry it back into place to refit. Hopefully, once that's done, rest will be pretty straight forward. Would never have attempted doing this without the video - thanks.
