Always pump the brakes with the brake lever before riding the bike after you fit the new pads and check the brake fluid level - very important to avoid an accident

I want to thank you for the neat method to get the pistons back in, by reversing the old pads and twisting a flat bladed screwdriver between them. Works great. Thanks.

Thanks, this will make it much easier than it already should be. FYI, the 2 caliper mounting bolts should be torqued to 27-31 foot pounds, for those having a torque wrench. A simple C-clamp would also do the job, no need to open the brake fluid reservoir up top.

Terrific video and out saved me dough. Two things I will add: #1 After disassembly, spray the parts down with brake cleaner. #2 Use a "C" clamp to push in the pistons. A car brake piston tool will only work on one of the pistons because the mounting bracket is in the way of the other. Thanks again and best always!

Good job, liked watching it! I never did Nissin brakes before. One remark: You don't really need to open the reservoir on top, there won't be more pressure than when the brakes were new. It makes pushing the pistons in easier, but it can also make a mess if you're not careful and move the handle bar by mistake.

Hilarious AND informative! Nice! The tip about opening up the brake fluid reservoir really made my life a whole lot easier this time around when doing the brake pads on my 2009 Rebel. Did need a phillips screwdriver for that though which wasn't listed in tools needed--don't know if it's the same for 2004 models. But if people have all those other tools, they'll probably have a phillips screwdriver laying around somewhere too, so I'll just shut up now.

You sound like George Takei. Love the humor and clear video with easy to follow steps. I would only add that you may need to clean the caliper and add anti squeal compound in some cases. (It wont hurt to have it regardless. Thansk for the video, exactly what I was looking for before i did in and take my wife's 250 rebel front brake off for a squealing issue.

You can actually squeeze the pistons in with your hands as well if you have a strong grip. That's how I do mine. Put your fingers on and across the piston and just clamp your hand around the back side of the caliper and squeeze hard. I usually do one piston at a time and it works just fine.

Is it really necessary to remove the caliper .Just did my honda front and back today without the calipers dissengaged
@acigarwilldo
@acigarwilldo 5 жыл бұрын
Paul Fischer Whatever floats your boat mate! As a precaution I like to inspect the pistons, boots, spring plate and pad pins when I replace my brake pads. It’s only 2 bolts to dismount the caliper and makes it easier for me to push the pistons back in to make room for the new thick brake pads to go in. The Honda Rebel (up to 2016) has drum brakes in the rear. Cheers!
@FairwayJack
@FairwayJack 7 жыл бұрын
how do you know you need to replace the pads? ...does it make a screeching sound or is the travel on the hand lever increased? ...or does the bike simply not stop ??
@acigarwilldo
@acigarwilldo 7 жыл бұрын
The best and proper way is to do a visual check and see how thin the pads are. Generally, if there's a millimeter or less of the friction material it's time to replace them ASAP before they wear out and expose the back metal plate of the pads. If it gets to that point the rotor will be chewed up and it won't sound pretty. The hand lever travel shouldn't change because the brake fluid from the reservoir will compensate for the space gained from the pistons pushing out. Hope this helps Jack!!!
@FairwayJack

Are the parts for the Honda Rebel expensive? For example, how much do you think a knew gas tank would cost? I know car parts from the dealer are very expensive. That is why most people go to Autozone or other car parts stores for their parts. The problem with motorcycles is there is no such thing as a Cyclezone to save the day.
