How to Replace Internally Routed Bike Cables and Cable Housing

Over time, the shifter cables and housing on a mountain bike wear out and need to be replaced. When replacing the cables and housing on a bike with internal cable routing it's important to follow the proper steps to avoid fishing for loose cables and housing inside of your bike frame. Replacing derailleur cables and housing is much easier than setting up internally routed cables from scratch because you can use the old cables and housing to guide you.
In this episode Jerry will cover the tools and techniques used to replace cable housing on a mountain bike with internal routing.
Tools Needed:
Cable snips
New housing
New cables
Housing ferrules
Cable tips
Flat head screwdriver
5mm allen wrench.

This is by far the best video on replacing internally routed cables. My Giant Stance derailleur cable routes through the rear triangle as well as the down tube. Using the cable as a way to guide the housing makes it a lot easier. You can also cut your new housing cable to the correct length before installing it by comparing it to the old housing.

Thanks for tip! I took the housing and cables off the bike and spent nearly all night trying to figure a way to get the new housing through the bike. Took a lot of make shape tools to get it through. I’ll save your video for the next time I change the cables. 👍

Worked like a champ for my dropper post. Mangled one grommet but hey, it's a small price to pay and I covered it with electrical tape and you don't even notice it. Best tip out there........

Just an FYI, the factory replacement grommets are 10.00 each, which is almost as much as the cable kit from Jagwire.......

I'm too scared to try it as I think I might never get the cable back in, but I shall have go later! Mine's a Shimano Deore shifter too and that didn't look too bad, at least I don't have to take the shifter off the bike. My cable is internal but doesn't seem to have any internal housing, just external at the ends. You just poke the cable down and try to find it at the bottom bracket where there's a gap, and then feed it on to the rear wheel. This type might be easier, or maybe not, so I will see. I'm trying to do more of my own maintenance because I do a lot of cycling, so it would be good to be able to do most things myself on the bike. There's a bike shop walking distance away if anything goes wrong. Phew! I don't have a car.

You can slip a very tight inner cable (16mm for shifting, 18mm for rim brakes) above the cable that fits in the housing. Jagwire for example has transparent inner cables but can be hard to find.

Warning!! Don't do like this guy shows! Feeding the housing cable through the frame is not nearly as easy as he shows! Use electric tape to tape the old and new housing so they are "mouth to mouth" with the wire still inside and then feed+push the housing through the frame

2:30 my cable just binds and binds and binds when feeding the housing through, oiled the shit out of it too. The cable will bend sideways inside the frame when the housing is being pushed into the frame. The result is that the cable just gets bunched up because it does not move freely inside the housing (unlike your black magic in the video where the cable doesn't go sideways at all inside the frame.) I cannot keep the cable taught because there is no way to grab it when it is in the housing.
