How to replace knock sensors on 2002 Toyota highlander

come along as we replace a knock sensor on a 2002 toyota highlander we purchased off craigslist to flip

A warning and a heads up for anyone needing to do this fix. Spend the extra money and buy OEM parts. Get two sensors, the wire connectors and new gaskets. I chased my tail with this and have done this process 5 times in two years. Finally got OEM parts and it's been smooth sailing.

I have used your video and only your video on this issue, that I am experiencing for the past week. I’m also replacing knock sensors and gaskets while I’m down that deep. I am doing that coolant hose that runs above the knock sensors. Thanks for a well detailed video. I’m glad you got a good deal after a sensor fix.

Great video. Thanks. Just a couple of comments: to replace the rear intake gasket you have to remove the front coolant neck that bypass hose connects to. To get that you need to loosen couple of bolts on the front motor mount where one of it's brackets mounts on top of the coolant neck. Not a big deal...bolts are easily accessed. Also i would plug all intake ports with rags to prevent any debris or small parts from falling into the cylinders. That would ruin your day.

Haha yeah my check engine is on right now. It’s throwing knock 2 and o2 sensor. So hoping it’s just the knock which is why it won’t shift properly. And hope I can do this without having to go to a shop!

mines doing the same thing 5 Grand at between 60-70 has intermittent engine light so def noticed a difference of when its on and off kinda feels like not gearing up thanks man this was a huge help

CommonSense: You don't remove all that to just replace one Knock Sensor. You are supposed to replace both Knock Sensors, Coolant Pipe and Knock Sensor Wire.

Do you think its possible to remove the 2 allen key bolts with just an allen wrench or do you recommend a socket for that? I will be doing a ton of work (valve covers, spark plugs and both knock sensors) and want to see if there are any additional tools needed.

All you need is a normal 10mm 12mm and 14mm and an extension.

@@lucio350zx Appreciate the reply. With yours on the throttle body was there a 12mm bolt on the side facing the fire wall? If so how did you remove it because it is literally the only thing holding me back right now and I think I may be rounding the nut.

I got this same job done but now I'm having a bad smell inside the cabin. It smells like smoke/gasoline mixed , any ideas ? Maybe the mechanic didn't put something back into place .

Is the Knock sensor going bad a result of refusing to Tune your vehicle by Oil change, spark plugs, air filters etc?

heat destroys the wire harness since its under the intake, it is subjected to immense heat and cold cycles and the wiring becomes brittle.

I would add a diesel turbocharger to it so it can have more power. I'd also add Porsche brakes on it so it can stop better. It needs a spoiler on the back because of how fast it will go. If not, you'll get speed wobbles. I know, because I'm a professional mechanic. Ask me.

You did all that work and there are two sensors. Why would you replace only one of them? I’d never do that just because of the location and the amount of heat in that general area. The other one will fail obviously soon. Foolish. Spend the money and also change that coolant line across the top of the sensors. Dam dude!

I agree if this was a vehicle I was going to keep i would of used all new and replace both sensors but these vehicles are for resale so we have to do them on a budget and at $150 a sensor sometimes I just have to bite the bullet and get it done
