Thank you very much for making this video. I have a question for you. Does the mower deck only have 1 spindle and the 2 sealed bearings? Or, is there another spindle and bearings on the other end of the mower deck?
@JohnsonsSmallEngines3 жыл бұрын
If your mower deck has two blades? Then there is two spindle shaft hubs, one on each side. There are two bearings fir each hub so total of 4 bearings.
@JohnT2482 жыл бұрын
Great ideas! I have been using a sharpened piece of rebar to remove old bearings. The repurposed bolt worked so much better saving time. The socket bearing install pretty nice idea as well. Thank You

Great videos and very helpfull. I recently bought an old sabre 1742 hs. I think the mower deck is to far gone to weld /repair. I cant manage get bee shell. I have found a complete deck for 100series deere. The only difference i can see fir pictures is the rear hangers being adjustable round bar type rather the fat bar linkage with adjustment through bracket on deck. Will this type work on sabre ? I can sent you picture if helps

You would need to contact a John Deere dealership and talk to service to help you with that question. I do not deal with swapping any decks as have had many issues in the past.

How do you know when you need to replace the bearings?
@JohnsonsSmallEngines3 жыл бұрын
They will be very loud. And your blade shaft could be wobbling. But usually they will just be very loud when you spin the pulleys by hand when the deck is off the machine.

I personally never tried it but if you call a John Deere dealer and talk with a parts person, they may be able to tell you the differences so you can see if it would work.
@usa16714 жыл бұрын
Talk with a parts person in the Wilmington John Deere store...they are usually rude! You tell them "thank you" and they'll just hang up.

wouldn't it be easier to just replace the spindle?...

Yes, it depends on your budget. You will save $$ replacing only the bearings.

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Agreed on saving $$, if I were doing that job I'd just spend the extra money and just replace the spindle saving any extra work... Nice video though....
@rcronin12 жыл бұрын
Over $50 for the spindle assembly from John Deere. $13 for the bearings from my hardware store. If you already have the tools and can spare the time and elbow grease it's definitely cheaper to do it yourself. Plus, you need almost all the same tools just to replace the spindle assembly. You can get cheaper spindles assemblies on Amazon FYI.
@rcronin12 жыл бұрын
I am so inexperienced that I didn't realize it had brakes until I had the whole thing apart and put back together. I assumed the bearings were shot because it didn't spin freely - but it didn't spin freely because the brakes are engaged by default. Lesson learned. The bearings looked awful so it certainly didn't hurt them to get replaced 😜

Yes there are clips on the older John Deere 314 tractor and they must be taken out to remove and install the new bearings. The clips will come out but are a little tricky.
