I just did mine today, I disconnected the sway bar on the left side for a little extra room but you absolutely do not need to remove the steering box.

yeah this alot more work i dont understand this. ive never seen anybody remove the steering box to get the arm off. unless you were replacing steering box with it i can see it.

THE BEST VIDEO out there for gearbox and pitman arm - you should UPLOAD it again with TITLE as Steering Gear box Gearbox removal for Silverado 4wd because 2wd are not like this they have a rack/pinion.

take out both of the front bolts on the steering box and loosen the back one you can swing the gearbox around enough to reach it, no skid plate removal needed either.

If you have a 3/4 ton you NEED to remove the steering box because a puller will not fit with the larger cross member in the way.

I like how the video showed. Oh, you just pull the intermediate steering shaft off, and then we... Dude!! It took me an hour to get that damn thing off because the shaft wouldn't collapse!! It was stuck in a groove it had made being so old and worn out! Also, unbolt the bottom nut on both sides of the stabilizer links to make threading in the inner tie rod end easy. Doubt if you want, I don't care, it made it easier for me.😂

Really not sure why you'd go through the hassle of removing the steering box? You can remove the arm without removing it.

I mean they make a low profile pitman arm tool. I think I dropped the sway bar down. And pulled it off. It’s half the time

Oh, maybe this is shop procedures.. that's where all them additional labor hours are added to provide some profit for the shop.. haha, gotta make some money too ya know. 🤣 I'm just joking. This is the GM's reccomend procedure. Most shops will use the flat rate books to qoute repairs. But you can lower the sway bar and change it on the truck.

I'm putting the factory pitman arm on a Cardone (Car-Done) reman steering gear and it does not appear to be going on all the way. I talked to Advanced Auto accusing them of giving me the wrong gear. So I'm watching yours and others videos and it appears the pitman arm does not fully go onto the splines. It appears on mine and maybe yours that there is about 1/8 inch of splines still showing on the the pitman arm. I can see how this would be the case just to be sure that it is as tight as can be. Is this true?

My mechanic wants 1300 bucks to replace the idler arm and pitman arm on my 2 wheel drive 2005 Silverado. Seems like far too much for the time it takes.

You must get paid by the hour. You don't have to take all that off.i used a $15 pitman arm puller from harbor freight and only removed the skid plates and that was it. You are scaring people so they will take it to a mechanic😒. I'll make a video and post it. Watch it and you may learn something.

Very very odd, I’ve watched a several different videos on pitman arm removal & install, And this is the only one that created so much extra work, by all the extra steps to remove steering box. Not to mention leaking power steering fluid & all the other issues that could be created by removing the power steering box unnecessarily.

There is a frame crossmember on these trucks, immediately beneath the pitman arm shaft. There is no way to attach a puller. If you are hammering or trying to use a fork to loosen the pitman arm you are causing potential damage to the steering box.
