Great video. What he skipped over with a cut is that that adjustment screw for the brake shoes is VERY difficult to adjust. DO NOT touch it if you don't have to. Tightening the shoes is easy.......loosening them is very difficult. Took me 45 minutes to adjust one after I made the shoes way too tight by mistake. Learn from my failure.....lol.

Great video !! Not a lot of "Ummmm"s and "you knows.."s that some videos are loaded with. Great speaking voice and you clearly know what you're doing. Thanks for helping me save myself some money. I was comfortable with the disc pads in the front but the springs on the rear drum brakes I was apprehensive about. You made it a snap to get it done. Great info on the brake grease and anti-seize also. Best video I've seen on this procedure by a MILE.

When you bleed drum brakes makes sure you have the drums on, otherwise you end up damaging the brake cylinders and have to buy new ones. It just happened to me so all the work was for nothing. Have to do it all over again tomorrow with new brake cylinders.

Great video thanks, one question what size bolts do you use to break the drum off ?
@CoolCatsLC Жыл бұрын
Took my car to firestone the brakes were grinding. They told me they looked at them and they were fine. I asked if they took off the drums and they said they looked through "the peephole". The noise I was hearing was supposedly something rattling around in my trunk. I took off the drums and the shoes were down to bare metal. I made a video confronting the mechanic and used this video to install my own brakes.

best video. I seen probably all of the ones for this vehicle and sadly I have spent 3 hours trying to do one side.... and the difference between this and other videos is that you put in retaining spring and locking nut at the end. this helped me.

Thank you for this. Fortunately I work in a shop with all the tools I could ever need. After freaking out about the damn springs I decided to take an angle grinder to make a slot in my screwdriver so they stopped slipping off.

Thank you. This living room mechanic couldn't have done it without you. One extra trick I figured out was to take the u-shaped retaining clip off the parking brake, use a vise grip pliers with one jaw on the pried open end of the clip and the other jaw tip grabbing the stud the clip is around. Squeeze and it pushes retaining clip off . Similar technique tomout back on.

Thanks - this was really helpful. I can do almost any disc brake pad replacement with no instruction, but I hate drum brakes rather passionately. If the brilliance of a thousand suns were to burst forth into the sky, that would be like the intensity of my hatred for drum brakes. My only crticism is that I think most people will find it easier to attach the rear spring before pinning the shoe in place; I had no trouble with that after many failed attempts to do it in the order shown here.

Thanks for the great video. I finally got around to doing them last night. Shoes were only half but drums were warped. When warm they would pulse badly. Im not sure turning the drums would do anything as the problem only started after they were warmed up. I had to reuse the big spring on the adjuster the new one was too tight to fit(mines a 2014 it has a single spring on the top rather than two like yours)

Excellent video tutorial, so far it has helped me immensely with one side. BUT, what is the trick to loosening the star wheel adjuster from behind the backing plate? Mine seems to be locked in place and will not turn. Also, the extraction bolt method from the front will not break the drum free from the shoes. Any suggestions? My next step is to break it all to bits and replace everything inside.

Small but important detail: the rear shoe has to sit a certain way. The bottom part of the shoe (where it sits on a metal plate) has to sit on the first “ledge”. If you push it too far, it will sit behind this ledge, and kinda feels like it’s meant to be there, but it’s not. The drum will be difficult to put on, and you will feel vibration on your brake pedal if you install it this way, since the shoe will be at an angle.

Question. Do you have to purge the system by removing the brake line nut, pump the brake padel and open and close the port. It's that something that needs to be done after replacing the brake pads and rotors?

Great channel, I appreciate the information for us DIYers. I'm a firm believer in rust prevention and "Krown" application here in Canada. I don't understand why people don't spent the $100/yr. on a quality spray application (minus the brake area) and keep your car in decent condition.

Make sure your parking brake is off of course. I had one stuck so bad, the wheel doesnt even turn with parking brakes off. Also I dont recommend a hammer because brake dust gets everywhere and you dont want to breath in that stuff., use as your last resort. And theres a special tool to detached the parking brake cable easy, but whatever way is easier for you.

I used this video for my rear breaks, granted it took a lot longer. After pumping the breaks to get the shoes situated I lost all brakes. The wheel cylinder on the untouched side blew out because I didn’t bleed them both. I would make sure for any1 doing this to bleed both drums at the same time before you try to use the new drums

Brake cleaner is toxic (unless it is labeled as non-toxic) and is a whole lot worse for you than the dust. If I have to use it- I do it in a highly vented area and do not breathe it. One other thing, when the axle hub is rusty, I hit it with a wire wheel to remove as much rust as possible, Other than that great vid. Mike
