Here is a short video on how to replace read pads on a Alpha Romeo Mito 2013.
Some garages do not have a customer viewing area or the customer usually leaves the garage and are not able to see how the work is carried out on their car. So we have made this video to show how it's done.

How brake pads function:
Brake pads convert the kinetic energy of the car to thermal energy by friction. Two brake pads are contained in the brake caliper with their friction surfaces facing the rotor.[1] When the brakes are hydraulically applied, the caliper clamps or squeezes the two pads together into the spinning rotor to slow/stop the vehicle. When a brake pad is heated by contact with a rotor, it transfers small amounts of friction material to the disc, turning it dull gray. The brake pad and disc (both now with friction material), then "stick" to each other, providing the friction that stops the vehicle.
In disc brake applications, there are usually two brake pads per disc rotor, held in place and actuated by a caliper affixed to a wheel hub or suspension upright. Although almost all road-going vehicles have only two brake pads per caliper, racing calipers utilize up to six pads, with varying frictional properties in a staggered pattern for optimum performance. Depending on the properties of the material, disc wear rates may vary. The brake pads must usually be replaced regularly (depending on pad material), and most are equipped with a method of alerting the driver when this needs to take place. Some are manufactured with a small central groove whose eventual disappearance through wear indicates that the pad is nearing the end of its service life. Others are made with a thin strip of soft metal in a similar position that when exposed through wear causes the brakes to squeal audibly. Still others have a soft metal tab embedded in the pad material that closes an electric circuit and lights a dashboard warning light when the brake pad gets thin.

Great video. Thanks! Make sure you unplug the battery before doing it. After you are done pump the brakes and pull handbrake a few times. Reconnect battery and start car. I got a check engine light due to abs system and had to recalibrate with odb. Hope this helps anyone from having the same issue ❤😊

My wife want to have Yellow calipers and I also replaced the disks and pads, but I was puzzled about the handbrake. (Still no clue how this operates.) I followed your instructions in the video pump until your foot-break until it is hard than check the hand-break. Everything works fine. Thanks for this video. Greatings from Holland.

Great tutorial. I am replacing my rear pads and discs on my mito in a week or two. Can you tell me if you have to remove the caliper carrier to remove the discs off the hub or can you do it with it in situ? Also is it best to slacken the disc retaining screws with the handbrake on before removing the caliper so the disc doesn't rotate as I try to slacken the screws? Thanks for a great video and any advice you can give me. Cheers!

Thanks for watching and glad this video was helpful. Regards to removing if you doing disc and pads then it's best if you take the screws out first for the disc and to do that. # handbrake on remove the screws for the disc for that you'd need 11m or 10m spanner or socket once removed release the handbrake. # remove the calliper from the carrier. # remove the pads and the two bolts that's holding the calliper carrier. Once that's done then you can remove the disc and clean the hub with wire brush. # wind the calliper back with special windup tool (don't force it) # clean the new disc with brake cleaner and put it back on the hub (line the bolt holes) put the screws on hand tight. # clean the calliper carrier fit it back on to the disc, 2 bolts back on the hub (make sure they proper tight) # pads on to the carrier (don't forget the copper slip) # put the calliper back onto the carrier and connect the brake ware wire. One side done do the same with the other side.

When you've completed the job make sure you pump the brake pedal first once hard then pull the handbrake. Thank you P.s if you have problem go to your local garage or call us.

+Taj Tyres ltd Thanks for the 'Heads up', I have replaced quite a few pads and discs in the past, just never rear discs, especially with hand brake incorporated. Thanks once again!

Hi Paul, Yes, after replacing the rear brake pads on your 2009 Alfa with a manual handbrake, you will need to reset the caliper so that it can properly adjust the handbrake. Here are the steps you can follow to do this: 1. Use a piston wind-back tool or a pair of pliers to rotate the caliper piston clockwise until it is fully retracted into the caliper housing. 2. Install the new brake pads into the caliper, making sure that they are seated correctly. 3. Reinstall the caliper onto the rotor and tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's recommended torque specification. 4. With the car's wheels still off the ground, pull the handbrake lever several times to engage the rear brakes. This will help seat the new pads against the rotor. 5. Release the handbrake lever and check the clearance between the pads and the rotor. If necessary, adjust the handbrake cable to achieve the correct clearance. 6. Test the handbrake by applying it firmly while the car is parked on a slope. The car should not roll when the handbrake is applied. By following these steps, you should be able to reset the caliper and properly adjust the handbrake on your 2009 Alfa.

Great video! Does it have only brake pads in the rear or it has also brake shoe in the disk for parking brake?

+Vaggos Chio Thanks! It only has brake pads, no shoes. The handbrake works with the calliper :)

Thanks for the reply!!! i have 158k on my clock with my mito do you suggest me to change the discs-brake pads or only brake pads? The discs condition is like as video maybe a little bit more rusty...

@TajMotorMedics 7 жыл бұрын
+Vaggos Chio a lot of rust can cause judder if you think they look bad and not safe then replace otherwise just do the pads only and make sure before removing the calliper the hand-break is down so the calliper can be removed easily. Good luck 🙂

Hi is there a warning light on the mito when the brakes need to be replaced ? Mine got now 47000 km with same brakes...

Nope mito don’t have brake wear indicators so if you’ve got alloys and you can see the brakes then check them visually. Thanks

Thanks for the reply Taj Tyres .I used Pagid ,didn't know about the sensor plug until I went to fit it ,not a huge problem ,and the genuine Alfa pads squeal after about 6 months from new. The Alfa dealer who, being as professional as they where recommended that I would like to fix the brakes myself since I'm in the trade lol (1ST service 8000 on the clock )...I did repair them ,but the dealer sadly didn't know that I knew the area trouble shooter and, that Alfa in Italy where not impressed when I informed them..Alfa in Italy are very helpful and I have never had an issue with them personally...The only thing they couldn't find out for me was the paint code for the dark gloss mirror caps ..Any customer issues you send to Alfa UK are automatically sent to Italy....But your tips on the silicon is a good one ,I used to use it on window runners for squealing windows ,but in close to 40 years I never thought of it for pads ,though I work on trucks we still have the boots on the calipers
