At 3:49 in the video, that is the "tool" they use to make sure seal seated properly. After you have pressed down firmly, don't forget to remove the "tool"! Otherwise you'll find yourself taking everything apart again.

As a fairly new boat owner that has a 1993 model with the same engine and out drive I found this video very informative. More than likely I'm going to have my marine shop do this service since I have no idea when it was done last, then I think I'll be able to do it myself in the future. I have a very competent marine service that has fixed every goofy thing the previous owners did. I'll be back to square one after this service. Thanks Eddie for a very helpful video.

I have changed my impeller and it said on the box do not leave the seal seating plastic tool in place like you did. I would add a note to say remove the tool luckily I spotted the instructions apart from that great little vid

Put the shifter in gear before starting the job.. makes things easier. Also, the lower unit is missing the small stainless steel studs that holds the new plates and gasket in place after you removed the impeller. I can see they kept moving on you. Studs are usually in the repair kit.

I would use dish soap on the water tube instead of wd40. I also used dish soap in the impeller housing to help with getting it in there. The shift seal tool should not be left on there! It is only used to press the seal down, make sure that doesn't stay on there! Other then that, great vid, thanks for the info Eddie.

Couple of comments. No grease needed on the splines, since on Alpha 1 Gen 2, the splines are oiled. Like others said, the seal seat tool is a tool, it doesn't stay on there. And I had a bugger of a time getting it back together, due to not know how to line up the shifter shoe. It should go on, and face forward (forward of the boat). From the 12 o'clock position, if you hold it, the prop should not rotate counter-clockwise, and should rotate with clicking clockwise. Then rotate the shifter shoe counter clockwise, about to the 11 o'clock and it should stop. Then, the prop should lock clockwise, and rotate with clicking counter-clockwise. Took me 3 tries until I got this figgered out!

What does it mean when the gear lube comes out the hole on the right side of the lower unit when attempting to fill. Is my lower unit upper seal bad?

Something he did not point out, if you want to test the old or new impellor , you can't using the muffs. The pressure from the water hose will force the cooling water into your motor. This will keep the motor cool even if the impellor is completely shot. The only way to test on dry land is to put your out drive down into a small barrel of water to see if the impellor is actually sucking water in. Or just put the whole boat into the water.

No, it's not ok. He did not even use the tool correctly and jammed the seal with thumbs which will lead to wear and improper seal. The tool makes it even and just barely touches housing

So it does not matter which way the impeller is placed into the housing. Splines can be turning either direction? Also I heard you say something about a vent tube, mine does not have a vent tube.

@liboatersclub You are not supposed to leave the plastic seating tool on the shaft. Once seal is seated then the plastic tool comes off.

ok EDDIE this is Eddie J from AZ. Good video very helpful even though I have changed it before. If you could just get your item descriptions correct its impellor not propeller, you have gaskets, seals and O-rings everything that keeps liquids were they go is not a seal. Gaskets are paper usually but could be rubber or cork. O-rings are black or orange and seal both inner and outterly and seals are black usually and seal innerly they have a very small spring that clamps down on the seal lip to aid in the sealing of an inner shaft or pin. Sorry don't mean to nit pick but if you were on the phone with a merchant trying to obtain parts by description it would be a nightmare calling everything "seals"

Good job, started to go boating with the family today, the shifter was hard, did not want to move forward or reverse. Finaly got it into forward, no reverse though. It has not been ridden since last year when I replaced the water pump so I may not have put it on correctly. This is what I did, Put the boat in reverse, slid the unit up onto the upper, while doing this the lower unit is in reverse (that is where it wants to stay). Afterwards it still does not move smoothly. Any help for me?

That seal on top of the water pump is the face seal and that black plastic piece you put on and left is a set tool. You put on the seal then slide the set tool over it, while holding down on the plastic set tool, pull up on the shaft, this will set the seal to where it is supposed to be, then remove the set tool, it does NOT stay in there. Otherwise good video.

lol and there are alignment tools used when installing the gaskets and housing, and torquing the first two bolts, as for the impeller he had it right the first time , the new impeller goes on the shaft, you just push down the housing on the impeller while rotating the shaft clockwise, with the installation pin tools in place.

just saw him place the housing shower cap on way too tight, the purpose of the cap and tool, is so that there is a perfect gap between the shower cap and the housing, when the pump is working, water comes out up the hole in the housing, and the shower cap, seals the shaft, and lets water out evenly around the housing, to keep it cool. pushing it down tight against the housing will cause the housing to overheat, and possibly warp, and melted rubber scars on the inside of the housing, like seen earlier in the video.

When refilling the outdrive from the bottom, be sure not to pump air into the lower unit. Stop pumping before you get to the end of the container. Save what's left to fill from the top after getting the bottom plug back in.

How many yrs. can the outdrive sit with a new pump in it before it needs to be changed again? the boat was not used, it was stored for years with a new pump.

Even of the boat hasn't been used for a couple of years, I would replace the impeller anyway. It's a small job now, but if your impeller is damaged your motor could overheat and that may cause damage beyond repair. The rubber in the impeller i aging even if it's not running.

Hello, Eddie or anyone else that can help me answer this concern of mine. At 5:53 of the video, you added grease to the top of the shaft. My question is that when I replaced my impeller I did not add grease to the top of the shaft. It looks like lower gear oil is lubing it or is it not ???? Should I pull it back off and add grease to it????? Thank you very much !!!

Thanks Dave for turning a Harley mechanic into a Mercruiser serviceman. My unit has a collar lock on the vent tube which, if not physically being released, will rip the vent tube out. And if not physically reattached, it will just be laying there and probably pick up water. Thanks again, your our go to video.

It depends on rotation, and he didn't even take note of it and may be backward. Correct procedure is to put blade on shaft, push down on housing while rotating the shaft. The housing will go right on. See my video for correct way to do this

+Robert Wartanian Both the engine shaft and the propeller shaft will rotate in a clockwise direction while it is in forward, so the fins will trail behind while rotating.

you MUST have the drive in the vertical position when filling with gear oil. Otherwise you WILL have air pockets toward the propeller. AS PER MERCURY MARINE!

+elimonjal careful, some sterns are counter-clockwise. Rotate the shaft in the right direction and make sure the impeller blades are "set" and make sense..

if you watch the vid closely, you will note the system must be in drive or forward during the operation(prime reason for shift or seating problems aand finally,turn the prop for final seatin of shaft splines

Good video aside from not knowing the nomenclature for the parts and leaving the seal seating tool on. It would be helpful if you used the correct term when explain certain steps (o-ring/impeller/gear oil). Also when addressing the locations of the bolts it is either forward or aft, aft being the furthest bolt back.

@liboatersclub: On an Alpha 1 outdrive, how do I know if it's in forward gear after installing the lower unit back into the upper gear housing? I'm having trouble after trying to put it together; the shift cable doesn't seem to want to go into either forward or reverse.

You really need to take the advice given below and either take this video down or redo it. If you redo it, make sure to follow all the advice listed in the comments. Also, here are a few more things: First, they are "Anodes" pronounced /ˈanōd/. Also, you should not refer to them simply as "Zinc" in an instructional video. Zinc is for saltwater and Magnesium is for freshwater. Someone with a freshwater boat may go into the marina and ask for zinc anodes. Then, in the fall, they will pull their boat out to find their outdrive has been eaten half away from electrolysis. This happened to me due to similar bad advice a long time ago. Second, you say: "Put all the fins goin' in one direction". Well, which direction? If they are not bent the correct way the pump won't work properly. Third, you keep calling it a "propeller"... Stop that!

I don't care if you been mechanican for 50 which is where I'm headed antway gearwrenches rock as long as they are original gearwrenches or a reasonable facsimile. the fine racheting characteristic has saved me fatique and time ...time after time....so you got taken to school on tool selection, every tool has its place and time if you had 44 years wrenching you would already know that. Next time you curse a tool think about a time when you didn't have what was necessary then be thankful.

Not an Alpha One assembly, the pump housing was shot you did the owner an injustice by reinstalling it. Worst mechanic practices I've ever seen.
