Big thank you from Australia mate. Mine didn't separate quite as easy as yours. Beer and a big rubber mallet was required. Couldn't believe the amount of gunk inside there!!!!

How old was the pump impeller do you think? Mine's 7 years old but has only done 30 hours of work so debating whether I do it or not. Thanks

If your boats not overheating I wouldn't worry about. I have an old 1997 Bayliner Capri that bought second hand so god only knows how old the impeller was. It was running hot so I thought the impeller was the cause. Turns out the exhaust elbow had never been changed and was absolutely rusted up. I fixed that as well as changing the impeller (which was fine) A mechanic would tell you its always a good idea to change the impeller regularly. Its an easy job as well.

@@MrCalman65 thanks for that. I've had 2 boat mechanics now tell me it should be fully serviced every year. Just seems OTT. Manual says 3 years or 300 hours on the drive. Mine's done 20 hours on the river and 10 at sea. What's the common failure mode? Gradual raise in temperature or do they start to cook quickly?

Awesome! thank you for your tutorial. it gave me the confidence to try it my self and it all went smoothly. My boat - 2005 model - never had the impeller changed so I thought a proactive change was better than a reactive change. I was scared at first but it was actually very easy - took me two hrs by myself. I figured I saved over $250 - thanks Eddie!

Great video. I had never change one of these before. It helped that I am very mechanically inclined understand what was going on. Watched both videos and change one feeling like I had done it before. This really helped and is much easier to understand than a manual.

I have a 1997 searay signature 210. Im wondering if my impeller is on the motor or in the drive. Is it likely that I have an alpha drive?

In regard that "vent tube", that tube is your speedometer tube that comes from the front of the out drive without it your speedo won't work. One other thing the author of this video should have included is putting the outdrive back together. One trick is to align that tube to the pipe inside of the outdrive before you place the two parts back together. The other trick is sometimes the splines do not align properly when putting them back together, you must give the prop a spin sometimes.
@yaitsme4953
@yaitsme4953 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed, The little tube has a push clip in front of the shifter (2007 model alpha 1 gen2) Don't pull the tube off! it has a zip tie around it. Just push the clip release real hard and it will separate, then replace that little O-ring on the lower drive near the shifter foot. The shifter foot should be in the middle during reassembly. Once you get the splines aligned it can be spun.

NOTE: The vent he briefly mentions and points out is actually where the speedometer hose connects.

You should use dish soap as a lube for reinstall, not wd40, it will cause breakdown of rubber soap washes away and doesn't harm anything, also just buy a complete impeller kit not much more expensive! And by the looks of that anode it's running in salt probably time to replace! Other than that not bad

Hi Addie. Thanks for your detail video, i was able to change out the impeller on my 2000 Mariah last weekend. It's sure feel good knowing that it's was done right and saved some money too. Now i have a problem with my power trim. I have to use the trailer button to trim it down and up, because the one on the shifter won't work. How do i fix that problem? my boat is 5.0 mercury alpha.

Nicely done video and easy to follow, but I noticed a critical flaw. WD-40 attacks Buna-N! Second, I don't believe any petroleum based lubricants are allowed by Merc to be put on the impeller in it's housing as that will degrade pump's efficiency to cool the engine.
