Here is a video tutorial on changing the spark plugs on a Chevrolet Sonic 1.4L gasoline between the years of 2009-2015. This is a very easy and approachable repair that most anyone could do in their garage. Doing this repair yourself will save tons of money and you will know the job is done right. If you are looking to rent a torque wrench they will be for rent at your local parts shop, otherwise you could just buy one. You will most likely need it way more than once. Thank you so much for watching!
A good idea to take off the negative battery terminal cable before starting too!

Thanks for saving me a couple hundred bucks! I did have a couple of comments: when you said you had to put some effort into removing the coil assembly, you weren't kidding! I struggled and strained with that thing for 20 minutes before I got it off. Also, the rubber boots didn't come out with the assembly and it was a pain in the *** to pry every one of them out without tearing them to pieces! Still, great video and easy to follow; thanks again!

I love the juxtaposition of how cheery you are mixed with how much you chastise the engineering of all the part. "The next thing you gotta do is this! ...even though they made this so stupid. Here's another tip--just try this... because they were trying to save money on this for some reason--it still works though. Just remember to do this neat trick! ...as long as your PATIENT. Next thing we need to do is this... whoops, the dumb spring came out--but that's okay!"

On a Chevy Sonic. I changed the oil, flushed the tranny, replaced the filters and all the Spark Plugs in no time and a day. Easy as hell. The oils so freaking easy to change I don’t even jack the car up it’s hilarious. I can do it almost as quick as pumping gas. On BMW M235i and Mini Cooper S forget it. 😂. Too much work and BMW boots will rip. A coolant and Thermostat change on BMW M235i is hours of labor. I wouldn’t touch the thing to save my life. So it depends on the car. These Sonics are pretty easy to work on as is most GM products. Trust me on this lol. I’ve done a lot of maintenance myself on a lot of cars. Repairs included. The Sonic is easy and cheap too which is why I like it. Buy a BMW lol forget it your gonna need to be a Master Tech lol. The thermostat on those things is like a flux capacitor.

I'm so glad to finally find videos specifically about the Sonic instead other similar models. Thank you! My only question would be, how do you clean the coil bar and the silicone sleeves/boots? I got a rusted spark plug and one of the boots broke. The others are dirty but no rust.
@Zeek800
@Zeek800 28 күн бұрын
A rusted plug is very common. The valve cover, “ beauty cover” and coil pack bar are a bad design. Water ( mist ) can easily enter into the spark plug area ( 90% of the time it’s the 1st plug right beside the end that the wiring connection to the “ power bar “ ( drivers side ) that rusts. The water ( mist ) enter that end and usually that first spark plug hole. The engine heat causes the small amount of water to boil and the steam even enters the rubber boot.

I just went to change the plugs on my 2013 Sonic with about 90k miles on it and every boot was stuck to the plugs. I tried to finesse them off but destroyed 3 out of 4 trying to get them loose. I probably would have tried harder to not destroy them had I known I was going to be out more than $50 on replacements. I'm just glad I was able to find them separately and didn't have to fork out $150+ for a new coil pack. None of the springs inside the boots appeared to have dielectric grease on them either.

Aren’t ACTUALLY Delton plugs pregapped? I mean I always confirm it myself. I usually like to use OEM plugs but can you recommend any other good quality compatible plugs? I know NAPA sells the rubber spark plug boots individually so i guess other Auto Shops would too. In Canada that “ power bar “ costs over $200 the individual boots complete with the coil springs are around $12.

You don’t really need to be that accurate. If your good with a tool you can guess the 18 foot lbs. Rule of thumb is snug but don’t crank the thing hard. 1/2-2/3 turn probably does it at finger tight. It’s always good to go by the torque specs but the truth is you don’t really need to be 100% with it. The concern is stripping the aluminum. Or cracking the plug. That’s basically it. As long as they seal and tighten a bit. Your good.

Hey I have a question my wife's 2013 sonic has been some how squirting oil all over the left side of the engine. It only does it sometimes. I can't find where it's coming from I thought maybe it was from the gasket underneath those bolts next to the oil dipstick but I noticed the bolt to the right of the dipstick is discolored then the rest and almost goldish/bronzish looking and not silver like the others. After driving long periods like 2 hrs you can smell the oil on the engine and it smells hot. All fluids are fine. Would you happen to have any idea what it could be? Or maybe that discolored bolt? I know that was a lot to read but anyone who might have any information or help would be greatly appreciated!
